Even in athletics this year we saw that USATF has to include high school races in the middle of international meets in order to get a stadium audience I assume NCAA supports indoor sports which helps to boost some of these winter events. Practicing half-pipe tricks isn't much different than gymnastics but canoeing or alpine skiing are outdoor sports so a different story. The lack of depth is probably linked to the decline of escaping poverty through sports. The same happens in boxing or combat sports in general. I presume all cycling-related hype died after the Lance Armstrong scandal.

Shiffrin isn't very well known in though, alpine skiing is extremely niche outside of regions that have a big ski industry. It's a sport that's relegated to a second rate streaming service the vast majority of the time, so outside of the Olympics alpine skiers are almost unknown to 99% of the country. To be fair, being 'not very well known' and still raking in millions of dollars in sponsorship deals a year....nice If you'd like to help our fellow Totallympics member Bruna Moura get to the 2026 Winter Olympics, after her car crash on the way to the 2022 Olympics, every tiny bit of help would be greatly appreciated!
