  13. Cox and Graham win to make best-ever day for Australian moguls According to tradition, citizens of Australia typically recognize their country’s national day on January 26th, gathering in public places around the world to conspicuously and boisterously celebrate all the great things about the land Down Under. This year, however, the Australian moguls team decided to move things back a little bit, having their own Australia Day celebrations in Calgary’s Winsport Canada Olympic Park by way of Britteny Cox and Matt Graham taking the respective ladies’ and men’s World Cup moguls wins. While the unseasonably warm temperatures arrived as expected, Saturday dawned much gloomier and windier than had been originally forecast, and the exposed top half of the Calgary moguls course was rocked by gust after gust throughout the day. Still, with a large crowd on hand and the course in pristine condition, the best moguls skiers in the world were able to step up and get it done. For the ladies, this meant Ms. Cox was once again front and centre. The World Cup leader since taking her first career victory at the season-opener in Ruka, Cox hasn’t looked back since, and on Saturday was able to take her third win in the season’s fourth competition with near-flawless skiing from start to finish. Qualifying in first and then chalking up the best score in the semifinals, Cox dropped in last in the big final and calmly picked the tricky Calgary moguls course apart, nailing her top air 360, staying smooth through the roll-over section, and putting down a picture-perfect backflip on the second jump to earn herself a score of 82.11 to vault over second place Justine Dufour-Lapointe’s 80.02. “I had such a fun day skiing today,” Cox said following the awards ceremony, “I’ve just been building and building, from my win in Ruka (FIN) through to Lake Placid (USA) and then here today, working on my process and having fun, and with that the results seem to come.” Runner up Dufour-Lapointe put down a hard-charging run that itself could have been the winner save for a couple of small mistakes in the middle section. Justine was followed up on the podium by her older sister Chloe, making for the sixth-straight season with a podium in Calgary for Justine, and the fifth-straight for Chloe. With her win Cox now has 345 points on the season, holding an 84 point advantage over Justine Dufour-Lapointe’s 261, as the Canadian was able to leapfrog Perrine Laffont (FRA) to take over second place. Graham bests Kingsbury to break streak Coming into Saturday’s Calgary event Canada’s Mikael Kingsbury had won six straight times at the former Olympic venue, with his only failure to capture victory here coming in 2009/10 at his first career World Cup event. However, on Saturday that streak would come to an end, as Matt Graham shrugged off the pressure and capped the best-ever day for the Australian moguls team on the World Cup circuit with an impressive win. After Kingsbury came out of qualifiers with the top score, Graham settled into a groove in the semifinals, earning the top score there while displaying the smooth technique that has seen him emerge as Kingsbury’s top contender over the past two seasons. After Kingsbury put down a solid, if not flawless, run to take the lead in the big final, Graham was the only athlete left to challenge the great Canadian, and he rose to the occasion with two near-perfect airs and the fastest time of the round to earn a score of 85.34 and bump Kingsbury’s 83.90 down to second place. “It was super loud up there with the wind and I couldn’t really hear the scores, which I usually like to listen to,” said Graham of his final run, “So, I didn’t know what (Kingsbury) did, but I just thought to myself, ‘Well, I better put a smoking run together,’ and I was able to do that. And to see my score come up with the number one, after my teammate Britt just won for the ladies, that was pretty awesome.” “And it’s nice to knock Mik off that top step every now and then, prove that he’s human. He’s a good mate of mine and we push each other a lot.” Third on the day went to Ben Cavet (FRA), who himself just narrowly missed besting Kingsbury with his score of 82.89. With his runner-up on Saturday Kingsbury was able to maintain his hold of top spot on the men’s moguls leaderboard, though Graham was able to move into second place and close the gap somewhat, with 246 points to Kingsbury’s 320. The FIS Freestyle moguls World Cup now moves to the legendary venue at Deer Valley (USA) for moguls and the 2016/17 season first dual moguls event, with single moguls set for February 2nd and duals slated to go on February 4th under the lights. 16. Hoefflin and Stevenson claim wins in Seiser Alm Sarah Hoefflin (SUI) and Colby Stevenson (USA) have both claimed victories and the World Cup yellow bibs in the slopestyle World Cup finals held in Seiser Alm. Following the semi finals held earlier in the morning, top 8 ladies and top 16 men showed up at the starting gate, on top of the award winning snowpark in Italian ski resort Seiser Alm, to compete in the second slopestyle World Cup stop of the season. In the ladies' competition Swiss rider Sarah Hoefflin grabbed her first ever World Cup victory on her only fourth appearance on tour. Not only did she took the win, but she also gained precious 100 points in the World Cup ranking as she jumped over Tess Ledeux (FRA) to take the overall lead. "I can't believe it," Hoefflin said following the awards ceremony, "I would never think in a million years to do so well and it just makes me feel so pumped. The course here in Seiser Alm is amazing and all the girls were riding so well today. It feels awesome." The second place on the day went to the French rider Colline Ballet-Baz, while representing USA Caroline Claire rounded out the ladies' podium. On the men's side it was all about Colby Stevenson, who also took his first career's World Cup win with 89.20 points for his first run. Stevenson excelled on both rails and jumps leaving no doubts about who was the best rider on the day. With the big win in Italy, the American freeskier has joined his US teammate Mcrae Williams on top of the slopestyle World Cup standing, with both skiers now having 100 points after two competitions. "It's unreal man," Stevenson said looking at his yellow World Cup bib, "I did the best I could and ended up on top. I couldn't be more happy right now. With my dad and all my friends in here it's just the best time." Another rookie on the World Cup tour throwing it down for Switzerland Colin Wili finished the competition as the runner-up on second, while the Australian veteran and the two times World Championships' medalist Russ Henshaw finished the day on third. The FIS Freestyle Skiing World Cup tour continues next week with both, a halfpipe and slopestyle competition slated to take place in Mammoth Mountain (USA) from February 1 to 4, 2017. 21. Poland fights back in Willingen The Polish ski jumpers around superstar Kamil Stoch won Saturday's team competition on the Muehlenkopf-hill in Willingen. Maciej Kot, Piotr Zyla, Dawid Kubacki and the outstanding Kamil Stoch came in ahead of the teams of Austria and Germany. 21 000 fans in the sold-out arena had all the reason to hope for a win of the leading German team after the first half of the competition, but at the end the Poles and the Austrians were too strong for the Germans. For the team of Poland (931.5 points) this was the second win in a World Cup team competition, the athletes of head coach Stefan Horngacher took their first win earlier this season in Klingenthal (GER). Crucial for the success of Poland today was the tight team performance, none of the four athletes had a bad jump. "We had eight good jumps today and that made the difference and was the key to our success. It was a lot of fun to jump here in Willingen. Our team spirit is really good and our coach Stefan Horngacher has a lot of influence on the atmosphere within our team", Maciej Kot explained and added that "the level is very high at the moment. About ten athletes can win in the World Cup right now. Of course I hope that tomorrow one of us will be able to win here in Willingen." The team of Austria showed a strong performance and came in second (919.2 points). If Stefan Kraft would not have had such a bad jump in the first round, a win would have been possible for the Austrians. Kraft jumped only on 127.5 m in the first round and the team of Heinz Kuttin was far behind. But Gregor Schlierenzauer, Manuel Fettner and Michael Hayboeck fought back and closed the gap to the top. At the end it was Stefan Kraft who secured the second place for his team with an amazing jump on 142 m. "This is a nice success for our team. The entire team is happy about this result. I still have lots of room for improvement. There's still a lot of work left to do but from time to time I can show a really good jump, like in the trial round today. I will now continue working and take it step by step", Schlierenzauer summed up the competition. The German team lost the fight for the second place. While Markus Eisenbichler and Andreas Wellinger, who had the longest jump of the day with 145 m, showed great peformances, Stephan Leyhe and Richard Freitag didn't have their best day and so it was only enough for the third place. "We made mistakes today and were not good enough. We have to accept that. But it's a success to be on the podium, that's not that easy with all the strong teams", Markus Eisenbichler said after the competition. The third place today with a total of 910.7 points is okay for the German team. The final team event before the World Championships in Lahti was a success for the athletes of head coach Werner Schuster. Four teams can hope for gold four weeks from now, and the Germans are one of them. About 120 points behind, the fourth place went to Slovenia (791.2 points), Norway finished fifth. Russia showed a good performance and was sixth, followed by Finland (7th) and Japan (8th). The team of the Czech Republic failed to qualify for the final of the Top 8. The individual competition in Willingen will start on Sunday at 3:05 pm CET. Full Results Here
  22. Ledecka and Galmarini triumph in Rogla pgs Ester Ledecka (CZE) and Nevin Galmarini (SUI) have triumphed in the 2016-17 World Cup season's second parallel giant slalom which was staged in Rogla (SLO) today. And unlike the previous years before, the Slovenian resort was finally and deservedly blessed with a lot of snow and a blue bird sky which attracted even more spectators to cheer for their local favourites. While one of them, Rok Flander, finally retired from active racing finishing 17th and another one, Zan Kosir, made it on the podium as third of the men's competition, the big show was delivered by some other carving specialists. In the men's event, it was Nevin Galmarini standing out. After having been victorious agains Sang-Kyum Kim (KOR), and Sylvain Dufour (FRA), the 2014 Olympic silver medallist also eliminated Kosir to move on to the big finals where he faced defending alpine snowboard overall World Cup champion Radoslav Yankov. The Swiss racer was able to outpace the Bulgarian athlete with the tiny lead of 0.12 seconds to bring home his career's eagerly anticipated first win in his 88th World Cup start. “It's just unbelievable. It's so special and very important for me. I have been on the podium a few times but this... Every summer I train so hard doing it to finally win a World Cup race. Now this dream has come true. I'm super happy,” he said. His rival Yankov, who was so close to earn his career's third, stated: “Everything was perfect until the very last gates. I felt good during the runs before but then made some minor mistake at the end. So, I'm a little bit disappointed.” However, the rider from Chepelare, who had turned 27 two days ago, also knew: “But still, I'm happy with my second place, it's been perfect advertising for my home races next week. So, I hope that a lot of people come to Bansko to support me at site.” The ski resort nestling at the foot of the Pirin Mountains and latest addition to the World Cup calendar, will play host to two parallel giant slalom races therefore becoming the second ever snowboard World Cup stop in Bulgaria. Ledecka takes makes it three in Rogla With expectations high in Bansko, it's not clear yet if women's World Cup leader Ester Ledecka will make it there as the Czech superstar plans to compete in the St. Moritz alpine skiing world championships and has to define her travel itinerary. However, “I would love to compete in Bansko,” she said after winning the women's finals. It's been the third time after 2014 and 2016 for her to triumph in Rogla with five World Cup events having been staged on the Jasa slope so far. Ledecka, who is dreaming of winning medals in both, alpine skiing and snowboarding, at PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games kept hold to her title by beating Germany's Carolin Langenhorst, who earned her career's first podium. “It's always a tough race here as it is an hill which is easy – and that makes is so hard to succeed. All the riders are on the very same level. There are only some very small differences. You have to have a good tech and team behind you and be very good prepared in order to go every run as fast as you can,” she explained before adding that “I don't have a special secret. I'm just focusing on every single run trying to be the first one down in the finish.” Ina Meschik finished in third position after coming out successful of an all Austrian small final against her teammate Claudia Riegler.
