  8. Maggie Voisin claims the slopestyle World Cup win in Mammoth US freeski team athlete Maggie Voisin has claimed victory in the season's third slopestyle World Cup competition held at the Toyata U.S. Grand Prix in the primer Califorania's ski resort Mammoth Mountain. Following three days of strong winds, low visibility and snowfalls forcing local organizers to further postpone the competition, Sunday brought a major improvement as we could finally see the riders to drop in and compete for the World Cup points. In the ladies' competition it was 19 years old Maggie Voisin representing USA who stomped her run including a left 270 on the first rail, front 270 off a pyramid gap, switch to switch on flat tube followed by a switch left 180 leading into a right 540 mute, switch left 540 high safety and cork left 900 tail to finish off the things on the jumps. With a high score of 91.40 Voisin took her first ever World Cup win and 100 points in the overall slopestyle standing. "I'm just so grateful that the weather was able to hold out for the ladies today," said Voisin following the award ceremony, "I'm happy to put my run down and I hope to keep the momentum rolling throughout the season." The second place on the day went to Swiss freeskier Mathilde Gremaud who managed to score her second World Cup podium in just four WC appearances. Johanne Killi of Norway finished on third. Unfortunately, the pattern of week-long challenging weather conditions continued on Sunday and as soon as first men started with their runs, another stormed rolled in, bringing high winds combined with driving snow that led to the cancellation of the men’s slopestyle event. The FIS Freestyle Skiing World Cup tour continues next week in Quebec City, Canada. From February 9 to 12, 2017, the season's fourth slopestyle as well as the final big air stop of the Super Series stop will take place during the Snowjamboree 2017. Full Results Here
  9. Veterans Clark and White upstage Mammoth halfpipe field US superstars Kelly Clark and Shaun White have claimed victory in the 2016-17 snowboard freestyle World Cup season's third halfpipe competition which took place at the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix in Mammoth Mountain, CA. Defending Mammoth champion Clark, the most successful snowboarder of all times, was on fire in the final of the six best qualifying women of whom only three did compete due to other competition obligations. However, the three remaining girls delivered a great show. Clark, a three-time Olympic medallist, stomped a solid second run consisting of frontside air, backside 540, frontside 1080, cab 720, crippler and a final backside air to earn the high score of 91.75. “I'm really happy that I put down a run like I did today. I think regardless of the circumstances or how many people are in the event you wanna do a run you came to do,” said Clark. The 33-year-old relegated Haruna Matsumoto (JPN; 87.50) to the second rank who had landed a frontside air to backside air, frontside 900, backside 900, frontside 720, cab 720 and a frontside 540. Hannah Teter (USA; 36.25) placed third after bailing on her final backside 900. A stars and stripes kinda thing In the men's event, which featured all registered athletes of the Grand Prix after the qualifiers had to be postponed several times due to the bad weather conditions, Shaun White celebrated a decent return to the Word Cup tour earning his career's fifth, the first since 2013. The 2006 and 2010 Olympic champion landed an impressive first run wowing the judges with a method to frontside double cork 1080 mute, cab double cork 1080 stale, frontside 540 stale, double mctwist 1260 japan and a frontside 900 to finish things off. Earning a score of 94.00 White underlined that he is on a good way to become who he was before Sochi 2014 – the man to beat when it comes down to halfpipe riding. “I'm feeling great. You know, the weather wasn't great, we just kept waiting, waiting and waiting. It was tough to sit around thinking about what you would do. I didn't have the best contest at X Games so I was excited to come here and be the normal me and put some runs down,” White stated. Ryan Wachendorfer (90.75), who earned his career's first podium as second with a frontside 900 tail to double michelchuck, frontside double cork 1080, cab 720, frontside 720, cab double cork 1080 as well as Louie Vito (83.25) completed the all-American podium sweep. Their teammates Gregory Bretz (82.25) and Jake Pates (81.75) also added up to the great showing of the home roster finishing as respective fourth and fifth. In total, eight riders from the US made it to the top-10 with reigning world champion and X Games gold medallist Scotty James (AUS; 75.25) and his fellow countryman from down under Kent Callister (69.00) being the only ones to keep up with the hosting nation's team as respective sixth and eighth. The snowboard freestyle World Cup tour continues next week in Quebec City, Canada. From February 9 to 12, 2017, the season's fifth slopestyle and final big air World Cup stop which also serves as final event of the Super Series will take place during the Snowjamboree 2017. 10. US riders with slopestyle podium sweep in Mammoth Riders from the USA have dominated the 2016-17 snowboard freestyle World Cup tour's fourth slopestyle event which was staged during the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix stop in Mammoth Mountain, CA. The U.S. Snowboard roster claimed all podium spots in both, the women's and men's events which were finally able to go down today after snowfall and heavy wind had forced event organisers to postpone the finals twice. In the women's event and still facing challenging conditions with flat lights, Olympic champion Jamie Anderson, the best qualifier and last to drop in of the eight girls going for the win took advantage of her experience and strong nerves scoring a 80.25 for her second run which included a frontside 180 to 50-50 to 180 off, boardslide 270 off, handplant, transfer over rail, backside air as well as a frontside 540, cab underflip 540 and backside rodeo 540 over the jump line to walk away with her career's seventh. Hailey Langland, fresh off a big air win at the X Games and sitting on the top spot after run one finished in second position with a 77.40 while Julia Marino, winner of the X Games slopestyle gold this year who landed a cab double underflip rounded out the podium as third (71.85). “I'm feeling grateful after a crazy week of procrastination and weather, and I think patience really paid off this week. We finally were able to run the finals, and all the girls were able to put down some gangster runs. I couldn't be more happy after landing on the top. I can't believe I just beat a cab double underflip. I loved that,” Anderson summed up. Teen to grab career's first In the men's competition, it was Redmond Gerard who stood out. The 16-year-old shooting star of the current World Cup season, who also took over the World Cup lead today due to his career's first, threw down the winning run in his first run already with a frontside 270 to boardslide, crippler 450 stalefish, boardslide, air to fakie, cab boardslide, backflip, frontside 900 and a switch backside 1260 to backside 1080 setting the bar too high with a 87.95 for the rest of the 16-men field of the two run, best one count finals. “I'm feeling super good. I'm stoked that I put one down. At first I thought the jump section would be gnarly with the flat light but it turned out to be fine. You just had to trust your skills and trust your landings,” Gerard said Kyle Mack finished in second (77.05) and Dylan Thomas in third (73.95) therefore not also claiming their career's first World Cup podium but also earning a decent first result in the US' national Olympic qualifier series of which the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix in Mammoth was the first stop. The snowboard freestyle World Cup tour continues next week in Quebec City, Canada. From February 9 to 12, 2017, the season's fifth slopestyle and final big air World Cup stop which also serves as final event of the Super Series will take place during the Snowjamboree 2017. 13. Zavarzina and Dufour top second Bansko parallel giant slalom Bansko's successful debut as a snowboard World Cup host wrapped up today with wins for Alena Zavarzina (RUS) and Sylvain Dufour (FRA) who stood out in the second parallel giant slalom staged on the Alberto Tomba slope of the Bulgarian resort nestling right at the foot of the Pirin Mountains. Facing challenging conditions, Dufour brought home his first win since 2014 holding the upper hand on Radoslav Yankov (BUL) thanks to a superb carving technique. Through the first gates of the 500 metres long course, he set the local favourite under pressure and forced him to a decisive mistake. Barracked by an once again stellar crowd of more than 5,000 spectators the 27-year-old World Cup leader from Chepelare thad ried to keep the momentum from his victory in Friday's historical race going for another win on home soil but caught the wrong edge in a backside turn almost taking out Dufour, too. But the French racer saw disaster coming, avoided the crash and brought home his career's fourth. “I loved it today. Winning here is an amazing feeling. You had to fight a lot today, I'm so happy,” Dufour said while his rival Yankov added: “At first, I was disappointed because of my crash but now I'm really happy about my second rank finish.” Stefan Baumeister (GER) earned his career's first podium finish on the World Cup tour coming out successful of the small final against four-time world champion Benjamin Karl (AUT). Superzina wins tight battle In the women's competition, best qualifier Zavarzina claimed her career's third beating Friday's winner Patrizia Kummer (SUI) in the women's big final which was a tight battle from start to finish line therefore taking over the disciplines World Cup lead. “It's been a fantastic venue. I love the people here. Everybody was so supportive. However, today had some pretty challenging conditions. It was really hard not to fall, really hard to keep the balance in the turns. It was exhausting but I managed to work 100%, and I'm happy about the win,” summed up the Russian raceboarder. Japan's Tomoka Takeuchi rounded out the podium with Cheyenne Loch of Germany being forced to settle for fourth. The alpine snowboard World Cup tour continues in Bokwang, Korea where the official Olympic test event (PGS) for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang will take place on February 12, 2017. 14. Stefan Kraft again the best ski flyer Only gusty wind could stop the great Ski Flying party on the new Heini-Klopfer-hill in Oberstdorf. The strong wind lead to the cancellation of the final and so Austria's Stefan Kraft could already celebrate his second win in the Ski Flying World Cup within 24 hours after only one round. Andreas Wellinger set another hill record and came in second again, Norway's Daniel Andre Tande was fourth again. The third place went to Slovenia's Jurij Tepes. The first round on the Heini-Klopfer-hill was held under good conditions. The outstanding performance was once again shown by Germany's Andreas Wellinger, who had yet another record flight. After 234.5 m on Saturday, he landed at unbelievable 238 m on Sunday - enthusiastically celebrated by the crowd. Right after Wellinger, Stefan Kraft had an amazing jump of 235.5 m, worse wind conditions for the Austrian meant more compensation points and a clear lead for Kraft. Then in the break the wind suddenly got stronger. "This was very surprising for us. All of a sudden we had gusts from 4 m/s tail wind to 4 m/s head wind. Ski Flying is not possible under such conditions. It would have been dangerous", explained Borek Sedlak, assistant of FIS Race Director Walter Hofer and responsible for the start of the athletes. The jury had to cancel the final round after the start was delayed for ten minutes various times. "I would have wanted to attack Stefan again in the second round, but the conditions didn't allow that. Now we shared the success this weekend. Stefan got the wins, I set the hill records", said record holder Wellinger. Stefan Kraft, who took his seventh World Cup win today, was overjoyed after his second win in Oberstdorf: "I think this was one of the best flights of my career. I saw Andi jump before me and he was extremely high. I analyzed yesterday's jumps and saw that there's still room for improvement. Today I attacked even more, the conditions were perfect for that today", said Kraft. Slovenia's Jurij Tepes was also very satisfied with his third place: "Finally I could show good jumps here in Oberstdorf, the first one in the qualification was also very good. On Friday I was disappointed because I didn't jump well, but today it was great", said Tepes. Once again Daniel Andre Tande closely missed the podium. The Norwegian came in fourth for the seventh time this season. He tied for fourth with Slovenia's Peter Prevc, for whom this was the best result since Ruka late November. Best Pole in today's Ski Flying event in Oberstdorf was not Kamil Stoch, but Maciej Kot in sixth. Overall World Cup leader Stoch finished ninth, right behind his teammate Piotr Zyla. The seventh place went to Domen Prevc, who was fifth on Saturday and can definitely be satisfied with the performances in his first Ski Flying competitions. Behind Michael Hayboeck of Austria (10th) and Germany's Richard Freitag (11th), veteran Noriaki Kasai, the 1992 Ski Flying World Champion, proved that he is still a strong ski flyer, even 25 years after this success. Kamil Stoch of Poland still leads the overall World Cup with 1067 points, ahead of Daniel Andre Tande of Norway (953 points) and Stefan Kraft (920 points) who is now ahead of Slovenia's Domen Prevc (867 points). The World Cup continues next weekend in Sapporo (JPN). ----------------- Good news from Schlierenzauer In the qualification Gregor Schlierenzauer provided a moment of shock when he fell after the landing. After the competition there was some good news from the Austrian. "Gregor didn't sustain any fractures, he has severe bruises and there will be further medical checks this evening. It was a normal telemark landing, then the right ski got under the left one and he fell. He handled it very well, but such things happen", explained head coach Heinz Kuttin. "Gregor will now analyze it, it won't be easy, I hope that the pain will not be too strong in the next days", Kuttin concluded. Full results Here

  17. Feldberg SX World Cup cut short once again Despite a herculean effort from organizers, crews, and officials, the Audi FIS Ski Cross World Cup in Feldberg (GER) was cut short for the second straight day as persistent snow and wind made the situation too difficult and variable to finish the event. While yesterday organizers and officials were able to carry out competition heats for both ladies and men to facilitate an official result, the heavy snow throughout the day on Sunday made it impossible to get through a full phase of ladies' competition. Because of this, the Sunday’s ladies’ competition will go in the books as a cancellation, with no result. On the men’s side, the men’s preliminary heats were able to be completed. With no further competition phases after the preliminary heats, it went to the World Cup standings, combined with outcome of the first round of heats, to determine the results. Jean Frederic Chapuis (FRA) would be declared the winner for the second competition in a row, with Filip Flisar (SLO) in second, and Alex Fiva (SUI) once again in third. From here, the ski cross World Cup now moves to Idre Fjall (SWE), for a pair of competitions next weekend. A preview for the Idre Fjall events will be forthcoming. Full Results Here
  18. Johannes Rydzek makes it two in a row in PyeongChang It came down to a photo finish between Johannes Rydzek and Eric Frenzel in the second Individual event in PyeongChang and like in Seefeld, Rydzek had the better end for himself. Austria’s Mario Seidl repeated his podium performance of yesterday and claimed a third place this time, finishing 19 seconds behind Rydzek and Frenzel. Mario Seidl reigned supreme on the jumping hill again and set the first jump over 140 metres on this weekend. 142 metres and 127.1 points meant a 35-second head start on Eric Frenzel, who came in second with 131.5 metres (118.3 p.). Switzerland Tim Hug used very good conditions for a very good jump of 137 metres. This result put him in the intermediate third position, 45 seconds behind Seidl. Manuel Faißt and Eero Hirvonen jumped 129 and 129.5 metres respectively, which gave them positions four and five for the race. Yesterday’s winner Johannes Rydzek breathed down their backs as he started from position six with a delay of one minute and 16 seconds after a 126 metre jump. Just three second later, Norwegian Jan Schmid went out on the track. Yesterday’s third-placed Fabian Rießle was a little further back with a delay of one minute and 43 seconds. Mario Seidl valiantly defended his lead in the race until the mid-second lap when Eric Frenzel had made up his 35 seconds of time disadvantage from the start. Seidl and Frenzel skied together but behind them, Johannes Rydzek was not to be stopped once more. With the fastest cross-country time of 25:58.0, the World Cup leader caught up with the two and on the last ascent, Frenzel and Rydzek shook off Seidl. It came down to a finish line sprint which Rydzek decided in his favour. A slightly sick Eric Frenzel, who suffered from a cold, had to concede defeat. Mario Seidl delighted in his third place and the supreme command of PyeongChang’s jumping hill, Fabian Rießle skied from position 12 to a final fourth rank, Manuel Faißt was fifth and Tim Hug finished sixth. Korean starter Je-Un Park conquered the first World Cup point of his career on positon 30. Full Results Here
