  1. FINAL QUALIFICATION ROUND Tournament 2 Tomakomai (JPN) - 09.02.2017 - 12.02.2017 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Japan - France 4-1 Japan powers past France Kubo comes through again for hosts, Germans next Japan will face Germany in its final game, the winner getting a qualification spot in the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games. Hanae Kubo scored a power play goal in the third period to lead Japan to a 4-1 win over France in the Final Olympic Qualification Group D. With Japan holding a slim 2-1 lead, France was pressing for an equaliser and had several good scoring chances on Japan goaltender Nana Fujimoto. But with 8:50 remaining, Emmanuelle Passard took a penalty for holding and Kubo capitalized on a shot from the high slot that beat France goalie Caroline Baldin with seven minutes left in regulation. "We wanted to put it away earlier than that to be honest," Japan coach Takeshi Yamanaka said. "But Kubo came through with a clutch goal and that took the pressure off." Rui Ukita added another for Japan late in the third, poking in a rebound after Baldin made the initial save. France coach Gregory Tarle said he was proud of his team's effort. "It was a good game between two good teams," Tarle said. "When we were down 2-1, we pushed to tie it up in the third and had our chances. I'm very proud of our team." Japan will next face Germany on Sunday with the winner qualifying for the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. Germany beat Austria by the same score in Saturday's first game. Japan got the scoreboard just 2:21 in when Ami Nakamura took a pass from Kubo and rifled a close-range shot past Baldin. Haruka Toko widened the lead 3:28 into the second period, lifting a backhand into the top corner after picking up a loose puck off a turnover. "We got off to a good start," Yamanaka said. "It was good to score early and get a 2-0 lead in the second period. France got a little momentum there when we took some penalities but we were able to put it away in the third." France pulled to within one midway through the second period on a power play. Marion Allemoz took a slap shot from the top of the faceoff circle that beat Fujimoto high on the glove side. Kubo, who scored a hat trick in Thursday's 6-1 win over Austria leads the tournament with four goals. "It was great to score in a situation like that," said the 34-year-old veteran. Eight teams will play in the women's tournament in Pyeongchang. The United States, Canada, Russia, Sweden and Finland have already qualified along with South Korea which earns a spot as the host nation. Japan will take on Germany in the last game of the Final Olympic Qualification, a win sending the Group D hosts to Korea.
  2. Peter Prevc and Maciej Kot share the win in Sapporo There were two winners in the first of two Ski Jumping World Cups in Sapporo (JPN). Poland's Maciej Kot and Slovenia's Peter Prevc tied for first in Saturday's FIS Ski Jumping World Cup. Both scored a total of 260.2 points. Prevc jumped on 143 m (longest jump of the day) and 134 m, Maciej Kot had jumps of 139 m and 138 m. Austria's Stefan Kraft, who won in Oberstdorf twice last weekend and is still in a top shape, came in third, Andreas Wellinger closely missed the podium. This was the first win in the World Cup for Maciej Kot: "It feels great to win. It's my first win in the World Cup, hopefully it won't be my last. It wasn't an easy competition for me, the weather was not that good, but I had two really good jumps. I was working very hard to achieve this and it means a lot to me. Before my second jump I didn't think about the possible victory. I was in similar situations in summer, when I was in the lead after the first round. This made it easier for me now. I was also in the lead in Klingenthal this season and learned a lot then." For Prevc this was the first win this season, after the Slovene dominated the last winter. "I'm really happy. It has been quite a long time since my last podium. I was not that good in the trial round today, but I knew what I had to do to jump far in the competition. In the first round I also had good conditions. I hope I can perform that well again tomorrow, just be calm and enjoy jumping", said Prevc, who was cheered on by many Slovenian fans. This was already his 22nd win in the World Cup, the fourth in Sapporo. Prevc won a competition in Sapporo in each of the last four seasons. Only 2.7 points behind, Stefan Kraft was third: "Yesterday I was struggling a bit here on this hill, but today I had a really good feeling right from the start. It's fantastic that I could be on the podium again. I feel really good right now, I enjoy jumping and that's why it's going so well. I never have problems with the time difference, I like such trips and now together with PyeongChang I think it's very cool. One of my goals this year was to be among the best in the overall World Cup and I will definitely fight for it." Kraft is third in the overall World Cup with 980 points, he is now exactly 100 points behind leader Kamil Stoch, who had a big mistake in the second round and finished only 18th today. Norway's Daniel Andre Tande, who was seventh on Saturday, is second with 989 points. Wellinger and Eisenbichler strong Andreas Wellinger missed the podium in fourth. The Bavarian came in ten points behind Stefan Kraft in third. Behind Czech Roman Koudelka (5th), Markus Eisenbichler, who showed yet another convincing performance, was sixth. With Richard Freitag, who tied for eleventh with Swiss Simon Ammann, and Karl Geiger in 13th, the German jumpers achieved a top team result. Besides today's winner Maciej Kot, Jan Ziobro (9th) and Piotr Zyla (10th) also achieved Top 10 results for Poland. The Polish team has a clear lead ahead of Austria and Germany in the Nation's Cup and is the favorite for the World Championships in Lahti (FIN) starting two weeks from now. Domen Prevc last with 97 m The Prevc brothers had some ups and downs today, despite Peter's success. 17-year-old Domen Prevc, who was in an outstanding shape earlier this season, is not doing well in Sapporo this weekend. The youngest of the three brothers had not one normal jump here so far, although he was on the podium at this venue last year. Domen Prevc is far from finding his flying system. His brother Cene also failed to qualify for the final round in 44th. Disappointing day for the hosts Besides Taku Takeuchi and veteran Noriaki Kasai, four other athletes of Japan also missed the cut for the final round. Only Daiki Ito, Yuken Iwasa and Junshiro Kobayashi represented Team Nippon in the Top 30. "Of course Noriaki can do better. Today he had difficult conditions right after the take-off and the jump was not that good either", Kasai's Finnish coach Janne Vaeaetaeinen explained the early end of the competition for the crowd's favorite. The second competition in Sapporo will start on Sunday at 10:00 am local time (2:00 am CET). Full Results Here
  3. FINAL QUALIFICATION ROUND Tournament 2 Tomakomai (JPN) - 09.02.2017 - 12.02.2017 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Germany - Austria 4-1 Germany defeats Austria Will face Japan with Olympics on the line Andrea Lanzl scores in the first period on Saturday in Germany's 4-1 win over Austria in the Final Olympic Qualification Germany scored two quick goals in the third period to defeat Austria 4-1 in their second game of the Final Olympic Qualification Group D. Daria Gleissner scored on a power play with seven minutes left in the third and Kerstin Spielberger widened the lead just 22 seconds later with a backhand from close range that beat Austria goaltender Theresa Hornich. "We had a lot of chances to score in the first two periods but couldn't take advantage," Gleissner said. "So that third goal was the one that opened things up and allowed us to win." Germany will face host Japan on Sunday with a chance to qualify for the Pyeongchang Games. The Germans took the lead midway through the first period when Andrea Lanzl beat Austria goaltender Theresa Hornich with a wrister high on the stick side. But Austria came right back less than a minute later when Esther Kantor picked up a generous rebound and jammed it home. Austria was penalized with just over six minutes remaining in the first and Germany took advantage with Tanja Eisenschmid scoring on a slap shot from the blue line. Germany beat France 3-2 in its first game while Austria was trounced 6-1 by host Japan. Austria was penalized three times in the second period but Germany couldn't take advantage of their power play opportunites. When they did get a scoring chance, Hornich was there to make a big save. "Sometimes your power play works, sometimes it doesn't," Germany coach Benjamin Hinterstocker said. "It's not something I'm worried about." Eight teams will play in the women's tournament in Pyeongchang. The United States, Canada, Russia, Sweden and Finland have already qualified along with South Korea which earns a spot as the host nation. Japan, which plays France on Saturday, will present a big challenge for the German team. "Japan is bringing a great effort to every game," Hinterstocker said. "They are highly skilled and fast so I'm looking forward to playing against them." Only the winner of Group D will qualify for the 2018 Games.

  9. Home victory for Akito Watabe in Sapporo Akito Watabe has been the one to end the German victory series in the winter of 2016/17 and finally claimed his long awaited home victory. The Japanese won in Sapporo, finishing 4 seconds ahead of Switzerland's Tim Hug. Manuel Faißt upheld the German team's honour on the third rank, 12.3 seconds behind Watabe. Japanese jumping sensation Hisaki Nagamine truly earned the title of „King of the Hill“ with his third jumping victory in as many days. Today, he showed amazing 138 metres which gave him a total of 128.8 points but only a narrow 4-second lead on Manuel Faißt. Faißt hit his jump well and landed at 135.5 metres (127.7 p.). Veteran Håvard Klemetsen also returned to old jumping strength and had a jump of 135.5 metres which meant a time disadvantage of 16 seconds for the race. Crowd favourite Akito Watabe had 134.5 metres to show for and followed the three athletes out on the track from position four with a delay of 25 seconds. Yesterday’s winner and third-placed Björn Kircheisen and Mikko Kokslien had slightly weaker jumps today but were able to start the race together from positions 13 and 14, one minute and 32 and 33 seconds behind Nagamine. Switzerland’s Tim Hug was performing well on the jumping hill again. 131.5 metres (120.9 p.) put him in position five at the intermediate point, 32 seconds behind the leader. The three podium athletes were able to ski together for most part of the cross-country race. Manuel Faißt paired up with leader Nagamine for the first lap but they were soon joined by Akito Watabe and Tim Hug. By the halfway point, Håvard Klemetsen and Nagamine had dropped from the top group and after this, the trio continued to interchange in the lead. On the last lap, there was no stopping Akito Watabe, who really wanted to achieve his home victory. Manuel Faißt had to concede defeat first while Tim Hug stayed with Watabe until the stadium. But in the last turn, exactly where he had lost the race against Kicheisen yesterday, Watabe just went for it and the Swiss proved to be no match. In the end, an overjoyed Watabe was able to collect the fruits of his labours and enjoyed the cheering crowd. For the 28-year-old, this was the first victory after Oslo in March 2015 and an incredible series of second places in the season 2015/16. Hug was overjoyed to return to the podium after his maiden win in Chaikovskiy in 2014 and for Manuel Faißt, this was the second podium result of his career. Behind the top group, Mikko Kokslien skied through the field again but today he was not able to come closer than 45 seconds. He finished on position four, followed by fellow Norwegian Klemetsen on five. Again, the Japanese team had a very strong team result with Watanabe, Nagai and Kato also finishing in the Top Ten. 10. Xu and Kushnir take victory at Olympic test event aerials World Cup The first of this weekend’s two Olympic test event World Cup competitions in Bokwang Phoenix Park - the soon-to-be site of Freestyle Ski competitions at the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games - saw Xu Mengtao (CHN) lead a ladies’ sweep of the podium for China and Anton Kushnir (BLR) take his third victory of the season in the men’s competition. Windy conditions on Friday evening in Bokwang made things difficult for all competitors, forcing many athletes to ratchet down the degree of difficulty on their jumps and carefully ration their speed and air time from round to round. Factor in the personality of an unfamiliar venue and the added desire to make a mark at the site when Olympic gold will be awarded in just over a year, and it all made for a dramatic competition. In the ladies’ event it looked like an incredible winter for the Australian squad would add another highlight, as 2015 world champion Laura Peel and World Cup leader Danielle Scott rolled in to the big final ranked two and three behind China’s Yang Yu. However, in the big final, every one of the competitors save for Xu struggled mightily, with the Aussies fairing worst of all. While Xu’s clean double-full, full, earned her a score of 96.93 for the win, her compatriot Shen took second with a heavy back-slap on her full, double-full that earned a score of 72.26, while Yu completed the Chinese sweep with a relatively easy lay, tuck, for 70.72 points. Xu’s win allowed her to overtake Scott on the leaderboard and retake the yellow leader’s bib” “I’m so happy to have my second win of the season here in PyeongChang and to wear the yellow bib again,” said Xu after awards, “It’s a beautiful victory and I’m proud of myself.” Kushnir takes third victory of 2015/16 The men fared a little better than the ladies in putting down the landing gear, though for all three of the podium winners it took all they had to ski away from their final jumps without crashing. And, with all three men finishing with scores within a range of three points, the minor difference in each athletes’ landing would end up making the difference in the results. Kushnir ended up with a score of 119.47 on his full, double-full, full, for the win. Just behind, with a score of 118.55 was World Cup leader Qi Guangpu, who was able to hold on to his advantage on the World Cup leaderboard with the second place result. Third on the night went to Mac Bohonnon (USA), who performed the same jump as Qi but drifted slightly on his and has to fight the hardest for his landing. “To come here and win in Korea is very special,” said Kushnir of his victory, “the weather conditions were very tough with the wind, but I was able to do the jumps I wanted and get the landings and so I’m really happy.” Action in Bokwang continues tomorrow with the World Cup moguls competition. Finals for that event begin at 19:00 local time. Meanwhile, the aerials tour will be moving now to Minsk (BLR) for World Cup competition on February 25th. Full Results Men and Women

Huge 8th place for Anastasiya Kuzmina, she is still not fulley recovered from her illness and still has strong cough, but still was able to manage 8th place, pitty for this 1 loop in the standing shooting, without this fault she would have fought for medals Still not sure if she will compete in the pursuit, she will decide herself during the competition day, but today she once again proved that she know hoe to prepare for the major event and if she will be 100% fit she always fight for the medals, looking forward for next years olympic sprint and her golden hattrick dream... Paulína was very fast thats finally a great news, she somehow finally found her skiing form, pitty she always destroy averything in shooting and this time surprisingly in the prone In the Nations Cup we are still 17th but thanks today very nice points we increased a bigger margin ahead of Japan. also we are now some 800points infront of the 21st South Korea, so finally for the first time during this season our olympic 5 quotas looks more safe than they were untill now.

  15. FIS ALPINE SKIING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Women's Alpine Combined Final Results HOLDENER Wendy 1:58.881:17.84+41.04 GISIN Michelle 1:58.931:17.47+41.46 KIRCHGASSER Michaela 1:59.261:18.23+41.03 Swiss shine in St. Moritz alpine combined It was back to medal action at the 2017 Alpine World Ski Championships in St. Moritz (SUI) when the ladies’ were on stage for today’s alpine combined. The Swiss ladies’ team continued to shine as Wendy Holdener and Michelle Gisin took home the gold and silver medals. Austria’s Michaela Kirchgasser earned the bronze medal. It was the third medal for the Swiss women in just the first two events of these World Championships. For both Holdener and Gisin, it was their first career World Championship medals. Kirchgasser now has one silver and two bronze World Championship medals in her collection. "It's a dream," said Holdener. "I didn't think my slalom run would be enough to hold on for the gold when I came down. But after Michelle skied down, I knew I had a medal and then I watched as the last few had to start. It's still unbelievable for me." Holdener was centimeters away from missing out on gold, as her teammate Gisin looked to be on pace to take over the lead, but Gisin came across the line a mere 0.05 seconds behind. Both athletes huddled in the leader box through the final few racers and celebrated as the first-run leaders straddled gates, leaving the top positions to the Swiss. Sofia Goggia (ITA) led after the downhill portion, which was lowered to the super-G start due to forecasted fog, with Ilka Stuhec (SLO) sitting in second place. But both missed gates early in their slalom runs, paving the way for the double Swiss success. Holdener sat in seventh place, nearly a second off the fastest downhill run, while Gisin finished the downhill in fourth place 0.57 behind. But both the Swiss had amazing slalom runs, with Holdener having the second-fastest slalom run, trailing only Kirchgasser who had the fastest slalom run, ultimately propelling her to the bronze medal. The Swiss were close to the podium sweep as Denise Feierabend finished in fourth place at 0.83 seconds behind. Despite the huge medal success, the Swiss suffered a major blow today when Lara Gut was injured during warm-up between the two runs. Gut, who already earned a bronze medal in the super-G here in St. Moritz, was flown to Chur for further evaluation, but initial reports suggest an injury to the left knee. An action-packed weekend awaits St. Moritz with the men’s downhill tomorrow and the ladies’ downhill on Sunday. The weather is expected to cooperate and gradually improve throughout the weekend and next week as the World Championship continues.
