  1. KIlli and Ragettli victorious in slopestyle World Cup finals in Stoneham The second competition day of the Snowjamboree World Cup event in Quebec is in the books with Johanne Killi (NOR) and Andri Ragettli (SUI) taking home big victories in slopestyle finals staged in Stoneham Mountain Resort. In the ladies competition uprsising Norwegian freeskier Johanne Killi, went for her first ever World Cup win, making it also a third podium finish this season. Coming into the finals as top qualifier Killi received 88.80 points for her second run what moved her straight into the first position. "It was a bit pressure today, because I'm aiming for the World Cup crystal globe so I really had to do my best and I'm very happy that it worked out well this time," Killi said following the award ceremony. Sarah Hoefflin and Giulia Tanno once again proudly represented Swiss Freeski Team finishing for the second time this weekend with spot on the podium, Hoefflin took second place on the day only one point short behind Killi, while Tanno rounded out the podium on third. With the second place in Stoneham Hoefflin also kept her lead in the slopestyle World Cup standing that she took over after the finals in Seiser Alm, and with 249 points after fourth stops, she still has 19 points advantage over second in the ranking Johanne Killi. Ragettli stepped it up in men's competition and after finishing third in yesterday's big air finala, today he stomped his best tricks including a switch dub misty 1260 followed by triple cork 1620 some technical game on the rails and with a high score of 94.60 points he claimed the win and the yellow World Cup leader bib. "I was happy with my performance in the big air finals yesterday, but I knew I feel more comfortable in slopestyle so I really wanted to land my run," Ragettli said, "I ended up on top of podium so I couldn't be more stoked right now." Second place on the day went to James Woods representing Great Britain with Alex Beaulieu-Marchand taking third in front of his local crew, family and friends. 3. Thompson and Leman capture victories for Canada in Idre Fjall SX An excellent weekend of competition on the Audi FIS Ski Cross World Cup tour wrapped up in Idre Fjall (SWE) on Sunday with a huge day for the Canadian squad, with Marielle Thompson and Brady Leman both taking top spots in their respective races in impressive fashion. The ladies' big final on Sunday saw the Thompson lined up against Saturday's winner Sandra Naeslund (SWE), Fanny Smith (SUI), and Heidi Zacher (GER) for something of a dream final with all of the top four ranked ladies on the World Cup tour this season squaring off in battle royale. However, despite the wealth of talent on display in the final, Thompson was never really challenged at any point in the heat, moving smoothly through the course's tricky start section and quickly into a lead that she would only build upon through the rest of the heat. Smith slipped into second behind Thompson to begin with, but was caught by Naeslund just before the start of the big Idre Fjall straightaway and the Swiss skier would not be able to make up any ground Naeslund’s second place result gave the 20-year-old two podiums in tow days, while Smith’s third-place was her fifth podium of the season. Zacher was forced to settle for fourth. “I was just trying to ski as fast as I could in the final because I knew, after yesterday, that it’s easy to get passed if you make mistakes here,” said Thompson, smiling, “So I was just trying to be super smooth. I know Sandra is really fast and I was expecting her to be right there with me at the end, but I guess I did what I wanted to do. I skied my race and I’m super happy with that.” With the win, Thompson extends her lead on the Audi FIS Ski Cross World Cup to 135 points over Naeslund, with 765 to the Swede’s 630. Smith sits just back of Naeslund with 603 points. Leman snaps five year drought with win As with Saturday’s competition, the men’s race on Sunday in Idre Fjall was an unpredictable affair, with many of the top skiers bowing out well before they would have liked to or most would have expected. However, one man who did rise to the occasion was Canada’s Brady Leman, as 2016/17’s most consistent ski cross athlete was able to finally able to earn a victory and break out of a pattern that has seen him earn 17 podiums without a win since February 2012. Leman lined in the big final against the French pair of Arnaud Bovolenta and Jonas Devouassoux (after those two were able to get by their teammate and World Cup leader Jean Frederic Chapuis in the semi final), as well as Austrian speedster Adam Kappacher. Through the start section and the first two corners it remained neck-and-neck between Leman and Devouassoux before the Canadian was able to move into the lead, leaving the other three skiers to battle behind him. While Kappacher looked to be reeling in Devouassoux to steal second place, it would actually be Bovolenta who would prove fastest of the three down the final straightaway. Leman punched his way across the finish line just ahead of Bovolenta for the third victory of his career and first in five years, with Devouassoux taking third and Kappacher earning a career-best fourth-place result. Leman had five runner-up results in 2016/17 leading up to the race in Idre Fjall, and the Canadian was clearly relieved to make the move to the top step on the podium on Sunday. “It feels good to finally perform in the finals the way I know I can,” he said following the awards, “Sometimes you come second and you feel like you’ve lost, but that hadn’t been the case for me this season. I’ve actually been pretty pleased with the way I’ve skied for those results, even though it just wasn’t quite there. Today though I just had a ton of confidence. I went for the win right from the top and I was able to hold on. It was perfect skiing right when I needed it in the final. “And it’s a big day for the team. It always feels like a lousy day when Canada doesn’t have anyone on the podium and we didn’t have anyone on the podium yesterday. So, we weren’t gonna let that happen again today. And it’s great to see Marielle back on top after a tough crash last week.” With the win, Leman has closed the gap on Chapuis to 143 points, with 616 points to Chapuis’ 759. After a break next weekend, the Audi FIS Ski Cross World Cup tour moves into the homestretch, with the competition slated for February 25th at a new ski cross World Cup venue in Sunny Valley (RUS) serving as the last stop before World Cup finals take to the slopes of Blue Mountain (CAN) in early March. 6. FINAL QUALIFICATION ROUND Tournament 1 Arosa (SUI) - 09.02.2017 - 12.02.2017 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Switzerland - Czech Republic 4-1 Norway - Denmark 5-1 Sweet Swiss Switzerland qualifies for Olympic Games Switzerland has punched its ticket to Korea, defeating the Czech Republic 4-1 and qualifying for the country's fourth straight Olympics. Swiss star forwards Alina Muller and Lara Stalder each scored twice, while Florence Schelling allowed an early goal but shut the door down on the Czechs the rest of the way to earn Player of the Game honours. The Swiss will compete in Group B alongside Sweden, Korea, and fellow Final Olympic Qualificaiton Group D winners Japan. "Unbelievable, its what we've been dreaming of since last summer," said Stalder, who finished the tournament as the top point scorer with eight goals and four assists in three games. "I'm really tired, and happy! We gave it all in the end," said Muller. "Everyone in the room deserved this, it would have been so hard to miss the Olympics and I'm happy that the Swiss can participate." Going into the third period holding a slim 2-1 lead, the outcome was far from certain as the Swiss were battling a hard-nosed Czech team playing fast north-south hockey. But Muller, who has been unstoppable on the Swiss power play in this tournament, scored her second goal of the game, with a shot from the side of the net on the man advantage to give Switzerland some breathing room early in the period. The Czech's best opportunity to cut the lead came midway through the third, but Simona Studentova's open shot on a breakaway rang off Schelling's right post. After the missed chance, the Czech offence fell silent and Stalder finished things off with an empty netter sending Switzerland to PyeongChang 2018, the country's fourth straight Olympic Games. "It's amazing to win it here at home, amazing too that so many people came out to cheer us on," said Schelling after the game. The Swiss came into the game as the clear favourites, veterans of three Olympics and Sochi 2014 bronze medallists. However, Switzerland’s only other game against the Czechs at the senior women’s level came at the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship, a 3-1 Czech victory. In front of a loud crowd of local fans in the Swiss ski resort town of Arosa, the Czechs had a tall order to fill, trying to contain a team that has scored ten goals in two games and led by forwards Lara Stalder and Alina Muller who combined for 12 points in that span. The game was fast paced right from puck drop. In the first period, an aggressive Czech Republic forecheck kept the Swiss hemmed in in their own zone. The Czechs had a great opportunity to take some momentum away from the hometown Swiss with an early power play, but Tereza Vanisova missed on an open shot in front of the net. The hard work paid off though late in the period, when a deflected clearing attempt gave the puck to Katerina Mrazova in front of the net. Her shot was stopped by Schelling, but Aneta Ledlova was there for the rebound and put the Czechs up 1-0. A Lara Benz hooking penalty put the Swiss on their heels, but the team was able to get out of the period down by just a goal. For most of the second period, the Czechs continued to do all the right things - hard forechecking and consistent shot blocking - to frustrate the Swiss star forwards. But the Swiss finally hit paydirt with 5:41 remaining, when tournament top scorer Lara Stalder found her linemate Alina Muller with a precision pass to the side of the net for the one-timer. Then the vaunted Swiss power play struck with just 18 seconds left in the period. This time it was Muller setting up Stalder for a blast from the point to put the Swiss up 2-1 going into the third, a lead the Swiss would never relinquish. "They're fantastic, the way they played this whole tournament was absolutely amazing," said Schelling of Muller and Stalder. "In my opinion they won the tournament for us, they have all doors open to them and if they play the way they have in this tournament then we are going to be really good in the future." Although the team finished one win short of the Games, the Czechs battled hard and took a major step forward in the country's women's hockey development with a strong showing at the Olympic Qualification. "I definitely think we left it out there, too bad we didn't score more goals on the power play but I'm definitely proud of our team," said Czech captain Alena Polenska. "We have a young team but the girls work hard and leave everything out there and I hope we get another chance in four years." In the other game of Group C, Norway defeated Denmark 5-1 to claim third place overall.

  16. Samkova and Pullin triumph in second sbx race at Feldberg Eva Samkova (CZE) and Alex Pullin (AUS) have claimed victory in this season's fifth snowboard cross race which was staged as second event of the Feldberg (GER) double Snowboard World Cup today. While it was this season's second triumph for Samkova, Pullin earned his first in the running World Cup season on a perfectly shaped course on the Seebuck slope and in front of a stellar crowd. However, it was actually best qualifier Samkova who impressed the hundredths of spectators in the finish area of the Black Forest venue most as she took a different approach compared to her competitors in the women's finals to secure her career's seventh. Knowing that she had always been the last at the start, the 2014 Olympic champion decided to pull out of the gate with quite a gap but then went full throttle to finally pass her three rivals on the long and fast home stretch. “I did that late start for the first time. We just decided after semi finals to do it because I was really bad at the starts. The timing was hard though because you don't know if you catch them again,” explained Samkova. But the 23-year-old from Vrchlabi perfected her drag race skills, crossed the finish line as first and edged off four-time world champion Lindsey Jacobellis (USA) to the second rank. “I caught them where I was planning to do so but you never know. But man, making it it's like... you feel like a God. It's crazy when you get out late and are the first one in the finish. That's the feeling why we do this sport,” Samkova added. Chloe Trespeuch (FRA) had the luck on her side deciding the photo finish for third against World Cup leader Belle Brockhoff (AUS). Crash in first turn key to historic Australian triumph Over in the men's event, things went critical right in the first turn. With three riders going into the left berm at the same time, Alessandro Haemmerle (AUT), being on the fast outside lane, touched the tail of best qualifier Alex Pullin (AUS) before catching the wrong edge and washing out together with Hagen Kearney (USA) over the first step down with the US-American landing hard on his back before being able to finish the race on his feet. “Everybody went for it. I had the most speed and didn't know where to go with it as I was trapped between two riders. Then I hit Pullin's board, caught the wrong edge and took Kearney with me. I'm happy that nobody got hurt,” said Haemmerle who played the major role in the crash. However, it was Pullin capitalising on the carnage which took place behind him to earn his career's seventh and a perfect redemption for yesterday's disappointing early out in the eighth finals. “Yesterday was terrible, but I learned a lot of yesterday's qualifiers. It's been perfect and a really great turnaround for me because yesterday was pretty crappy although wining and losing is part of the sport. I'm really stoked,” Pullin stated. As 2016 X Games gold medallist Jarryd Hughes (AUS) was able to avoid the crash in front of him, the rider from down under made it a 1-2 double for Australia – the countries best result in World Cup history. Never before, two riders from Australia had placed on the podium together. Alessandro Haemmerle rounded out the podium as third earning back the World Cup lead from Omar Visintin (ITA) again who ranked eighth today – the first time this season that the rider form South Tyrol missed the big finals. As a result, “the focus is now on La Molina. I will focus on the Crystal Globe trying to make it in the finals there. And then it's time for the worlds and hopefully a medal,” said the new World Cup leader form Austria. The snowboard cross World Cup tour takes a break of three weeks now with the next race scheduled in La Molina, Spain on March 4 and 5, 2017. Full Results Men and Women
  17. Swiss party dominates the big air finals in Quebec City Swiss party led by Mathilde Gremaud and Kai Mahler has dominated the big air World Cup finals staged at 2017 Snowjamboree downtown in Quebec City. The event in front of a huge crowd of spectators also served as final stop of the first ever big air Super Series, a tour within the tour. In the ladies' competition Mathilde Gremaud led the Swiss podium sweep with Giulia Tanno finishing on second and Sarah Hoefflin ending up on third. After two second places in Milan and Mammoth earlier this season, 17 years old Gremaud made it all the way up on top of the podium earning her first ever World Cup victory. Swiss athletes also grabbed the overall Super Series win with a total of 225 points, 25 points ahead of the runner-up Silvia Bertagna (ITA) who finished the day just behind the podium on fourth. "I'm just supper happy," Gremaud said following the award ceremony, "I'm also a little bit surprised, because I didn't know I could also win the overall Super Series. It was the sickest competition I've ever done and I'm also super proud of my teammates Giulia and Sarah who share the podium with me tonight." On the men's side Kai Mahler stomped exact the same tricks that got him the win in the first city big air stop in Milan back in November, and once again, perfectly executed switch dub misty 1260 mute grab and carved tripled 1620 safety were just enough to secure the spot on top of the podium. Similarly to Gremaud, also Mahler took home the overall Super Series win, jumping over the second on the day Henrik Harlaut of Sweden, by a margin of as much as 7 points. "I was not expecting to do the triple at all," Mahler said from the finish area. "The shapers added a little bit more pop on the jump, so I decided in the training to try one and it worked out pretty well. I also wasn't expecting to get the Super Series win, because Henrik was skiing really good, but it was a tight battle and with two wins in Milan and Quebec I managed to land on top." Mahler's teammate Andri Ragettli rounded out the men's podium on third. After the fourth big air World Cup stop in Quebec City it is still Swedish duo of Emma Dahlstrom and Henrik Harlaut to sit on top of the leaderboard with only one more competition in the schedule, taking place on Friday, March 24 in Voss (NOR). The FIS freestyle skiing World Cup tour will continue on Sunday in Stoneham Mountain Resort where the penultimate slopestyle event of the season will take place with the finals kicking of at 1pm EST. 20. FIS ALPINE SKIING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Men's Downhill Final Results FEUZ Beat 1:38.91 GUAY Erik 1:39.03 FRANZ Max 1:39.28 Fairytale finish for Feuz with downhill gold With the hopes of an entire nation on his shoulders, Switzerland’s Beat Feuz delivered, winning the World Championship gold medal on home snow in St. Moritz. Wearing what proved to be lucky bib 13, Feuz took over the lead from teammate Patrick Kueng, who ultimately finished in fourth place. Canada’s Erik Guay gave Feuz some tense moments as he was on pace to take his second gold medal of these championships, but fell short by a mere 0.12 seconds. Austrian Max Franz claimed the bronze medal, 0.37 seconds off the pace. The race was a thriller, with the lead constantly changing hands and racers edging each other by razor-thin margins. The 50,000 fans were biting their nails as Feuz came down at each interval in the green. They had to continue to sit on the edge of their seats as several racers came close to dethroning Feuz, but ultimately could not spoil the fairytale. “To win this gold medal at home in front of Swiss fans, I couldn’t have asked for anything more,” said Feuz after the race. “It was a close race today and anyone could have taken the win, but I’m really happy that it’s me to win the gold.” It was the fifth medal of the World Championships for the host nation as the Swiss speed team has lived up to all expectations in the first five races in St. Moritz. For Feuz, it was his second World Championship medal after earning the downhill bronze in 2015 in Beaver Creek. Guay ended these World Championships with a gold and a silver medal – a major surprise for the Canadian team, which now has three medals in St. Moritz. “I get to walk away from these World Championships with a gold and a silver medal which is more than I could have every hoped for,” said Guay. “I’m just over the moon with how everything worked out, and I can go home very happy.” It was Franz’s first World Championship medal and he was happy to bring home the second medal of the day after Stephanie Venier earned the ldaies’ downhill silver earlier in the day. “Everything worked well for me today,” said Franz. “When I came down and crossed the finish and saw that I was in third, I was surprised. It’s great to take home a medal from this race.” Tomorrow, the men are back in action with the alpine combined. The downhill begins at 10:00 CET and the slalom has a 13:00 start.
