Biathlon hurts, but when your hobby is to rupture your meniscus, I guess the pain of skiing doesn't frighten you at all.
She'll start in the relay tomorrow, I'm putting my money on Russia with a pain lover like this.

If I was religious, I'd be praying for it to remain this cold (around -5 during the day, -10/15 at night) for at least two more weeks, but sadly that won't happen. As soon as temperatures are dropping significantly for an extended period of time here, people start talking about the possibility of finally having the (in our country) legendary Elfstedentocht again, loosely translated to 'Eleven Cities Tour'.
What is this Elfstedentocht? Well, obviously it's speed skating, come on, it's the Netherlands. It's a race over almost 200km, which was first held in 1909. Competitors (many thousands of them) pass through eleven cities of the Friesland province, having to get some sort of stamps along the way to prove they passed the checkpoints (yes, there's modern timing, but we don't need to abolish all traditions in exchange for modern stuff).
The problem is, this race can only happen when the lakes and rivers along the way are frozen over enough. Including the first one in 1909, there have now been 15 editions of this race, but sadly the last one already was 21 years ago now: 1997. So now that it's getting cold again, they've stopped the 'traffic' on the waterways and stuff like that, hoping that it'll help freeze things over and get strong enough ice
To illustratie, the finish of the last edition:

It's -10 degrees here and I'm starting to think about searching for my winter jacket.

heywoodu got a reaction from Nathy in Men's Tennis Davis Cup 2018
So after losing epic long 5 set battles, we'll also lose one of the main things that make the Davis Cup so good? Being the feeling of really having national teams battle each other, with one team having a home advantage. I guess it will all be some neutral venue now, where people don't care about 17 of the 18 teams...
This is so incredibly disappointing. RIP Davis Cup.

Wow, I've seen awful plans being accepted (like getting rid of the possibilty of absolute epic matches since even a 5th set goes to tie breaks now), but this is probably the single worst plan I've ever seen in tennis and one of the worst plans I've seen in the entire world of sports.
Where will the regular David Cup ties during the year be held with that plan? And for which goal? Surely not every important match will be held in one week somewhere in November?

heywoodu reacted to MHSN in Wrestling 2018 Discussion Thread
He got married after Rio and since then he is a bit "softer" on his opponents
yes he moved up to 97kg for the worlds and lost the final to Snyder but even before that he almost lost the Russian Championship final. but refs saved him. with UWW adding two more non-Olympic weight classes. he moved back to 92kg. which is more fit for him, he is still the best wrestler in the world but he is not as dominant as he used to be.
the question is which weight he will pick for Tokyo 2020. 86 or 97 ?!

In terms of participation mostly? For me aquatics has the same kind of problem: there's barely anything big outside of the world championships, whereas in athletics you've got stuff like Diamond League all throughout the year, swimming has a World Cup circuit with 5 athletes who care about it. And track cycling has what, 3 World Cup events? Not sure if that has grown by now, but I remember the entire World Cup season existing of only a handful of events.

Also, no Kreisel. That track looks so insanely boring.

heywoodu reacted to Dimast in Winter Olympic Games 2018 Final Review
These were the weakest Olympics in the last 30 years .. Empty arenas, bad schedule and weather, lack of excitement and passion, hockey without NHL, the transformation in x-games, and most importantly - a very nervous and difficult atmosphere. Too much negativity. Such this Olympics will remain in history.

heywoodu got a reaction from Wanderer in Men's Tennis Davis Cup 2018
Full tennis stadium with everyone dressed in orange, making even mediocre players like Thiemo de Bakker (mostly busy with eating as much fast food as possible instead of training) suddenly rise up and stand and fight, to get close to the kind of levels shown by the mighty Robin Haase.
And that's only for the Netherlands of course, but I'm sure the same kind of thing goes for many more nations. Now it will just be yet another meaningless Hopman Cup or whatever, another random World Tour Finals-like tournament that nobody really seems to care about. I'm putting my money down on having the NextGen Davis Cup as well within a few years. So urban. It's like they are the freaking IOC.
Yeah, and don't you dare dream this new event will be held in some small place. London, Paris, Barcelona, Rome, here we come. So edgy.

No, the very top 0.0001% of the best players wanted this. For many players, the Davis Cup was their thing, their ultimate goal. Bye to the epicness of 5 sets matches, bye to the crazyness of 5 matches rounds, bye to the small places and their one chance in a life time to host some of the best players in the world, bye to the crowds and fucking bye to history.
And they dare to call this thing 'Davis Cup'
Tennis is fast becomming a souless bilionaires freakshow, so clean, so perfect. Davis Cup was the last thing giving it a bit of life.

heywoodu reacted to Pablita in [PREDICTION CONTESTS] Discussion Thread
Now I know what Ledecka is feeling
First of all thanks to Wanderer and every one who helped to prepare the contest and keep them running, we have daily results, lots of contenders and different medallists (and great Italian team!!!), it seems the old days coming back.
I think the new form for the contest worked good and it has been easier and faster to fill them.
Now I had to confess my secret, I hope that my revelation won't cost me my medals anyway I will accept the verdict of the Wada totallympics committee but I want to let you know that I acted in good faith: I didn't know that I was increasing my chance to win.
The two contests I won were filled while I was...
