I always found it weird that Belarus got punished as badly (or in this case worse) as Russia.
 
Maybe I'm wrong, but I always saw them as a forced accomplice in this.

The "hexagon" is a relative early expression, commonly used only since the 70's. It has this nice technocratic, disembodied, touch... not very 1900 I'd say. BTW, the first Tour de France looked like this. so, if they were to create an hexagonal shape, we can safely state that the creators of the Tour were dead drunk when they did it.
 

 
PS : I believe the book you're referencing is that one , which indeed might have influenced the birth of the Tour de France, but AFAIK has nothing to do with this hexagon thing.

While no one jumps out as the favourite to challenge (I think the top 5 all have a chance), there's a good chance to overtake Spain, especially since they aren't competing here. Denmark and Ireland are at risk, but it would take a very strong swim by the challengers to be overtaken.

France and Hong Kong are the big challengers. I suspect South Korea will overtake Spain meaning they and Austria are the most at risk of missing the Olympics

South Korea and Spain are the biggest challengers. I suspect Hong Kong will improve their time meaning Denmark and Belgium will be at most risk of dropping off.

Quite the number of nations competing, but I don't see anyone outside the top 4 challenging and that's being generous. Neither Israel not Brazil are competing here so their results must stand if they want to qualify.

The big challenger is Great Britain, unless they DSQ again they will likely move into a qualifying position. South Korea and Singapore will also challenge. While the bottom three are in the most dangerous position, they aren't too far off from the rest of the nations.

Thailand's spot is by far the weakest and is essentially guaranteed to lose it. Their spot will be challenged by Singapore, Poland and Mexico. The other 15 are in a good position to keep their Olympic quota.

Hungary and Mexico will be looking to try to squeeze into the top 16. Things are quite competitive with the bottom four being at risk at missing the games. Switzerland isn't competing.

Because if we don't build any new venue for the Olympics, then nobody is ever going to build any new venue for the sport. Period. And without new venues, the same set of countries is going to win olympic medals for ever and ever (and one in particular who happens to have 3 times more venues than anybody else).
 
I understand Agenda 2020, the general economical/political context around the olympic games and that you can't ask for the same degree of universality of summer olympic sports. But still, if you basically give up on you only chance to grow the sport by building new venues in new countries, what's the point of the sliding events at the olympics ?

Still it’s obviously not the problem. The problem is France illegal goal (the free kick) that wasn’t even checked on var. why? Yes EHF wanted France to win.

After the referee failure in the semi I have hard to celebrate the Olympics qualification. Sweden should have at least silver. Sweden deserved better. Shame on you EHF.

Overall Austria/Iceland likely determines one European OQT spot while Portugal is in pole position for the other, especially when you consider Portugal's and Slovenia's final opponents and that Slovenia has a decent chance at getting the World Team OQT spot. Still, Denmark has nothing to play for in the final match so Slovenia getting an upset is not impossible.

Retour sur les premiers CDF depuis 30 ans à Inzell :
 
- rien de très neuf pour "l'élite" actuelle, hormis que Loubineaud semble revenir en forme et que Thiébault est une autre option sur la mass-start (qu'il gagne), la seule épreuve internationale où les Français peuvent espérer faire mieux que de la figuration dans un avenir proche.
- résultats très encourageants pour la relève masculine. Il y avait Paul Lenglin, qui confirme, et deux nouveaux arrivants du roller, Arthur Lebeaupin et Alexis Bodeven. Ils ont fait les temps de qualification pour la CDM junior (terminée) et échouent tout près des temps requis pour les Championnats du Monde. Le tout sans expérience préalable apparemment (l'article L'Equipe évoque 5 jours d'entrainement sur glace). Les deux sont junior première année et pourront donc prendre part aux compétitions l'an prochain, comme Lenglin. De quoi monter une PPE d'avenir puisqu'ils auront entre 21 et 24 ans "à la maison" en 2030.
- plus compliqué côté féminin. Moins de monde, des résultats beaucoup plus éloignés du niveau international et pas de jeune qui sorte du lot. On avait quand même quelques figures de premier plan du sprint en roller, vont-elles continuer l'aventure ? La fédération va devoir tenter de trouver des potentiels jeunes et les former. 
 
Les Championnats d'Europe ont lieu ce week-end au mythique Thialf d'Heerenveen. Une PPE française en lice et un patineur dans toutes les épreuves (sauf le 500m), plutôt réjouissant à voir. 

Patinage de vitesse : les Championnats de France sont confirmés. Ce sera le week-end prochain à Inzell. Un championnat chapeauté par la FFRS, ce qui peut apparemment poser problème pour les néophytes, souvent (dans un premier temps), transfuges temporaires du short-track, donc licenciés FFSG. Les quelques essais de jeunes qui ont eu lieu ici et là sont tous issus des clubs de glace, le roller va-t-il mettre en place une passerelle ?
Paul Lenglin dont j'ai parlé plus haut continue d'abaisser ses chronos, malheureusement il est trop jeune pour prendre part aux CDM junior cette saison. 
 
Retour sur les première CDM avant la quatrième ce week-end à Tomaszów Mazowiecki.

Loubineaud en difficulté sur les distances classiques, assez loin de ses records et du haut du tableau mais très en vue sur les mass-starts. Il ne passe pas loin à Stavanger, son groupe d'échappée se fait reprendre à quelques encablures de la ligne et il se fait bousculer et perd une ou deux places. Belloir pas chanceux sur les deux premières, mieux en Norvège, s'il pouvait être promu sur la course A les deux Français pourraient jouer en équipe. 
Deuxième PPE ce week-end en Pologne, Giovanni Trebouta va faire ses débuts en CDM, sur 5000m probablement, à voir qui est aligné sur la poursuite.
 
 
Short-track : retour de la CDM à Pékin cette semaine. Délégation réduite pour la France, qui devrait même faire l'impasse sur la suivante à Séoul puisque les CDF sont apparemment prévus en même temps. Les plus jeunes étaient alignés ces deux dernières semaines sur la nouvelle CDM junior, avec des résultats intéressants pour Tawan Thomas (2ème d'un 500m) et Bérénice Comby (sur 500 aussi, une finale). Les Français sont plutôt performants hors Asiatiques qui écrasent complètement la concurrence (donc face aux Européens et Canadiens). La mauvaise nouvelle c'est qu'Aurélie Monvoisin ne semble pas revenir de sa grave blessure. Elle a disputé une compétition en Italie où elle est restée loin du compte, se faisant déposer par des filles qu'elle battait très sereinement avant. 
 
 
Bobsleigh : début "officiel" de la Coupe du Monde à La Plagne ce week-end. Un bob féminin (Boch) et un skeletoneur (Defayet) seulement à la maison. 
 

Il y a en l'occurence 6 athlètes masculins (de ce que j'en sais), tous spécialistes du roller à la base (logique) impliqués :
 
- Timothy Loubineaud, 27 ans, qui a plus ou moins repris le flambeau d'Alexis Contin. Il n'est pas passé loin de se qualifier aux J.O 2022. Plusieurs participations aux Coupes du Monde. Equipe pro en roller, pas en vitesse. Spécialités : 5 000m, 10 000m et mass-start.
- Mathieu Belloir, 23 ans, plusieurs Coupes du Monde aussi. Spécialités : 1 500m, mass-start.
- Germain Deschamps, 21 ans, cousin du précédent, plusieurs CDM néo-sénior (pour les espoirs pas encore au niveau sénior) avec une victoire sur une mass-start. Equipe pro néerlandaise en vitesse (il fait pas mal de marathons). Spécialités : 5 000m, mass-start.
- Valentin Thiébault, 25 ans, aucune compétition internationale. Spécialités : 1 000m, 1 500m.
- Giovanni Trebouta, 24 ans, aucune compétition internationale. Spécialités : 5 000m, mass-start.
- Martin Belloir, 21 ans, frère, participations aux CDM junior et néo-sénior. Spécialités : 1 500m, mass-start.
 
Je ne connais pas le degré d'officialité du projet. A la base c'est plus des profils isolés qui s'impliquent de leur côté. Maintenant le fait qu'ils se retrouvent généralement au même endroit pour s'entrainer (Inzell en Bavière) fait que.
La FFSG est probablement perdue mais n'a de toute façon plus la main sur le patinage de vitesse depuis le début de l'année. La délégation de ce sport est désormais entre les mains de la FFRS, la fédération du roller (et skate). De manière décevante il n'y a toujours pas le moindre onglet dédié au patinage de vitesse sur leur site. Pas de documents officiels non plus. Le changement récent de tutelle fait qu'il n'y a à ma connaissance aucun projet de performance fédéral pour la discipline. Je ne sais pas le degré d'implication de la FFRS dans le "projet" de fait. Quoi qu'il en soit elle doit suivre, ne serait-ce que pour procéder aux inscriptions en compétition et parce que, contrairement à la FFSG, la plupart des athlètes impliqués sont reconnus par la FFRS en tant que spécialistes du roller de premier plan. Loubineaud était aux Europe à Valence-d'Agen cet été par exemple (et a dominé la compétition). 
 
 
 
La première info se fait relais d'un stage découverte pour une dizaine de patineurs des clubs de Belfort et Dijon. Toujours à Inzell. Mais c'est une initiative de la Ligue des sports de glace de Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Donc passage de short-trackeurs à la longue piste, ce qui arrive, mais ne me semble pas le parallèle le plus simple. Meilleur rapport à la glace que les spécialistes du roller dans un premier temps, mais techniquement différemment.
