MHSN got a reaction from Josh in Wrestling UWW European Olympic Qualifier 2024
wrestling can be weird sometimes, IMO Dzebisashvili was maybe the worst wrestler of that half bracket but he somehow managed to win matches, beating Arushanian by a last second takedown and then Sacultan 1-1 only by passivity cautions.
interesting that while other Georgian wrestlers are losing , he won the quota as the worst member of the team
and in the 2nd semifinal, Haji Aliyev had a heroic comeback in the 2nd period to beat the mercenary Russian of Albania I was expecting him to win the quota but he suffered a lot and could lose in the QF and in the SF too. but winning close matches is what you expect from an experienced wrestler like him.

if I had to predict the entire bracket of 57kg, I could get a 100 out of 100
not even a minor surprise here and the quotas go to Rezazade (AZE) and the Russian mercenary of Belarus Tyutrin

hard to tell, none of them impressed me today, interestingly both of them relied on counter attacks to score points, so I expect a low scoring tactical match which will be in Chamizo's favor because he is smarter. I think Bayramov's strategy will determine the winner, let's see if he falls in Chamizo's trap or not.
I think it's 51/49 for Chamizo

yeah that was stupid of him to try actions like this when he was leading comfortably. the match could end comfortably in the first period.
regarding the last chance qualifier, when we talk about men's freestyle it's only about Europe and Asia (plus couple of American wrestlers at 57 and 65) I can have a better idea about the possible favorites after the Asian qualifier but I think 97kg and 125kg won't be that strong in Turkey. everything is possible with 3 quotas available there. you still have a chance in 3 heavier weights
hopefully we won't have to send anybody there but I know that's wishful thinking

if Chamizo continues to wrestle like this, he is not going to win a quota today (or maybe he is saving energy ?)
his counter attacks are still deadly but you can't count on that too much against better wrestlers.
few more "favorites" like Zhabrailov or H. Aliyev struggled in their first matches. we might see some big names falling today

you think it was a fall ? no I don't think so, one of her shoulders was always on the air. if the center ref sees something even close to a fall you will see him looking at the mat chairman (to get the confirmation), that didn't happen,
the Czech girl made some mistakes in her adjustment and let her escape the fall. that was inevitable if Hanzlickova could just keep her position. or at least she could keep her for the entire 3 minutes and let the clock burn down. but I think it's easy to say from here, things are different when you are on the mat and your entire career's dream is on the line, you make mistakes.

Yeah, they had many injuries in November & December but the key part seems to be that Śliwka, Bednorz & Kaczmarek will all leave at the end of the season and it's public knowledge. So fans suspect they simply don't care about this season or the team's results anymore.
Śliwka will move to Japanese champions Suntory Sunbirds, Bednorz to Asecco Resovia and Kaczmarek to Jastrzębski Węgiel.

Thanks for explaining. I understand now better. Sorry I overreacted. I was hoping so much she will win the game so I was trying to find some bugs but there were actually none. Well, the life goes on, I still believe she can make it in Turkey at the Olympic qualifier in May :-)

I wouldn't pick this weight either. Li Dayin always lose critical events for many times and this time as usual. And he has 3 main rivals in this weight, ie the other 3 top4 in this world cup. So even if one or two of them underperform in OG, he may still lose the game. But 73kg Shi Zhiyong clearly just has one major rival, the young man. So if he underperform in OG, the 2-time OG defending champion would easily grasp the chance.

89kg quotas are already decided, all challengers (outside of top 10) bombed out already

taking a look at 89kg results (Group C and D) I think it's 99% safe to say that Kyle Bruce will take the continental quota. he had to battle his teammate Oliver Saxton and beat him by a kilo in Group C (336 vs 335)
it's almost a sure thing that all other 4 continents will have someone in top 10 and there is nobody else from Oceania

Germany and Russia won the last two quotas at super heavyweight. Germany deserved at least a quota today. most of their guys did good, even at 60kg and 87kg they lost very close matches to eventual finalists.
12 quotas went to 10 different countries/NOCs. with Turkey and Russian grabbing two. Turkey with 4 quotas so far is the most successful European country in Greco-Roman.
Armenia didn't participate here for obvious reasons but they won 3 already, that put them in second place behind Turkey.

a bit of free time so let's take a look at freestyle draw.
unlike Greco, it's mostly between Russian wrestlers and about who gets the better Russian which is a shame anyway.
57kg:
this weight usually belongs to Asia, and a few of top European wrestlers are already qualified making this competition a bit of weak
I think 4 or 5 wrestlers have a chance in top half. Atli is the biggest name but I think he is past his prime, Egorov won the Euro two years ago but still he wasn't convincing since then. we also have Dingashvili, but I think the host wrestler Rzazade has the better chance here
bottom half is much easier but still I can't see a clear favorite, beside the Suisse wrestler everybody else has a chance. but I think it will be between Vangelov, Lehr and Tsiutryn. BUL and GER have a better chance since they have a bye in the first round. still my pick
65kg
top half looks much easier. almost everybody (except the Suisse) has a chance. but I think the winner of first round match between Clarke and Arushanian should be the main favorite. Sacultan had a great run last year and almost won a quota , he has to beat Naim (BUL) to reach the SF. we also have the Georgian wrestler who is not good enough as far as I know but still
Islam Dudaev has an easy path to the SF most probably against Haji Aliyev. but it won't be that easy for Aliyev, he hast to beat the French/Russian guy and later TUR/BLR. Aliyev is aging but still I think he is good enough, I say
74kg:
Frank Chamizo is not as good as before but he got a good draw in top half. I think he is already in QF against Kuramagomedov or Elbakidze. won't be easy but I think he can handle it to meet Bayramov (or maybe Shapiev) in the SF. I still consider Chamizo the favorite
bottom half is harder with 3 big favorites, Demirtas, Kadi and Salkazanov along side few more solid wrestlers like Diacon, the American guy Finesilver and drug cheat Khadjiev. but I think one of those 3 will take it. I pick Kadimagomedov but Salkazanov has the luxury of facing only the winner of TUR/BLR match which gives him a good advantage, still I say
86kg:
almost all favorites are in the top half. Gocen, Gamkrelidze and Makoev are all good but I think the winner Naifonov/Kurugliev match in the QF will win the quota. these 2 guys are just much better. they wrestled a lot in Russia and Naifonov usually ended up winning by the narrowest possible margin. he didn't wrestle much recently, therefore I'm thinking about picking Kurugliev but then I can't forget their previous head-to-head results
in bottom half, Ramezanov is getting good results since his move to 86kg, he has a good German wrestler in the first round and then probably Nurmagomedov. he is a 3 time world medalist at 92kg, he wasn't good in his first 86kg try but I'm sure there is a good reason why Azerbaijan still picked him. another favorite here is Myakhailov (UKR) he is also new to this weight, he was very good at 79, not sure how he can handle the heavier opponents, his previous 86kg experiences weren't good, last not least is Magamadov. for some time he was considered the next big thing, he makes it clear that he is not THAT good but still good enough to win a quota for the Olympic host. my picks
97kg:
the Great Tank is not here but I think it's still easy for Zhabrailov to win the quota. but he was a last minute replacement, not sure if he is ready to wrestle. I think Thiele (GER) is his only real challenge.
in bottom half we have Baran, Baitcaev, Nurov and Hushtyn for the quota. hard to pick between them. but let's say
125kg:
the possible SF match between Ligeti and Khramiankov will most probably determine the quota. Ligeti won their last encounter. but I think it will be 50/50.
in bottom half I think 4 wrestlers have a chance. I pick Meshvildishvili without hesitation but Khubulov is good too. Ithink it will be between them, with Khotsianivsky and Conyedo behind them, Conyedo lost to almost everybody and its dog last Olympic cycle but ended up winning and Olympic bronze never count him out when it comes to the OG. my picks
I can't believe I'm giving 4 quotas to Azerbaijan and 3 to Belarus, I don't think that happens, some of them will lose.
