We have reached the half-way point of the Asian Games. Let's see which nations are performing better/worse relative to 2018. Here's a medal table comparison between events which were held in both 2018 and 2022 (including esports).
 
Unsurprisingly, China as host nation is doing better relative to 2018. Most of this is due to their performance in swimming where they gained 8 total medals. On the opposite end, Japan's poor performance in the pool (-22 medals relative to 2018) is the reason they are on the bottom. Previous host Indonesia is down 10 medals while Thailand, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and Chinese Taipei are also down.
 
Uzbekistan has had a great games so far. Recently they have been courting ex-Russian athletes which has only hasten since the war began. Hong Kong, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates have seen some decent gains too.

The North Korean 49kg weightlifter just appear out of nowhere, take the gold and break the WR. I think other categories may also repeat this fantasy. Not sure how IWF and IOC will handle their Olympics qualification. From my point of view, they are not constantly attending requiring tournaments and not being timely monitored doping status. So according to the qualification document, they should not be granted quotas.

Finished watching all the skateboarding events.  definitely making noticeable headway in the sport. Both venues were a high standard too, so they just need to improve institutional knowledge of the sport.
 
Overall, I’d say the level of the competition was encouraging, although it’d be nice to see some more entries.

hmm, I think Iran is doing OK in term of number of medals but only 1 gold so far doesn't look good. even though in first 3 days beside volleyball the only sport we had a legit chance to win gold was Taekwondo. specially today we had the current World Champion but she lost in the first round  not the biggest surprise ever to me since I know our girls can't handle the pressure of being #1 favorite. we could win 2 more golds in the men's side but they both lost the finals narrowly. and our other medal-favorite girl lost because of weird electronic system which gave 20 extra points to the Chinese girl. I mean we are probably 1 gold less than expectations so far but that happens. 
 
you know wrestling is our big thing when it comes to the Asian Games but having World Championship only few days before the Games really ruined some of our chances. we still don't know the Asian Games squad and they are considering some changes. most of our top lighter weights wrestlers can't cut weight twice in a short period of time.

Yes. Amazing result. China did a good job but Korea is just amazing tonight.
 
BTW just in case some of you guys don't know before,  male Asian Games champions and Olympic Games medalists will be exempt from compulsory military service about 2 years. So basically  male athletes may be more motivated than other countries.

I am in Hangzhou and trying very hard to buy tickets here but still only limited matches successfully bought. I basically watch 1-2 matches on court and rest time I watch cellphone. Every time that I failed I was thinking why there are so many people in China. 

Chinese gymnasts in Asian Games will not attend WCH and I think Japan is the same. China send Men's A team(quota achieved before) and Women's B team to Asian Games. And I think Japan send both B teams to Asian Games.

Yes. Amazing result. China did a good job but Korea is just amazing tonight.

I just notice the Sheng wonderful performance in the 10m air rifle  253.3 and new world record, wow.

7.01 in the men's 4*200m Free...it would have been bronze for them at the world champs, ahead of  

1:54.12 for  Haughey

Due to the time conflict with Asian Games at home, China choose not to send full A team to WCH. Some of big names will attend Asian Games like Zhang Boheng and Xiao Ruoteng. As I as I know, some other Asian gymnasts may also attend Asian Games instead of WCH like  Calos Yulo and  Chusovitina.

Yes I was watching it on our local TV and nobody believes what just happened   beating Japan 3-0 ? seriously ? wow  bring on China 
 
heroic performance from all of our 3 players  specially Nima for beating Harimoto and gave momentum to the rest

I am currently in Hangzhou and ready to be a full-time spectator and I will watch rowing tomorrow morning to witnesses the first gold.
