    John Geddert, who coached the 2012 US Olympic women's gymnastics team, was found dead Thursday after being charged with 24 felonies in connection with the abuse of young gymnasts, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced Thursday.

  2. Jacinto “Jack” Cayco, who represented the Philippines at the 1948 Olympics and won gold medals at the Asian Games, died Wednesday Feb. 17 at age 96.

     

    A major figure in Philippine swimming history, Cayco swam in the 200 breaststroke at the 1948 Olympics in Helsinki, finishing 18th. He would go on to win that event at the 1951 Asian Games in New Delhi as well as a gold in the 3×100 medley relay.

     

    Cayco also captained the Philippine delegation to the 1954 Asian Games in Manila and earned a silver medal in the 400 medley relay at the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo. Cayco’s younger brother, Pedro Cayco, swam in the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne.

  3. Hall of Fame manager and Los Angeles Dodger icon Tommy Lasorda dies at 93

     

    Tommy Lasorda, the charismatic former manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers who maintained a relationship with the franchise as a player, coach, manager and executive for 71 seasons, has died at the age of 93.

     

    Lasorda posted a career record of 1,599-1,439 (.526) as the Dodgers' manager from 1976 to 1996. During that span, his teams won eight division titles, four National League pennants and two World Series championships. 

     

    Four years after his retirement as a major league skipper, Lasorda returned to the dugout as the manager of the 2000 United States Olympic baseball team, leading them to the gold medal at the Summer Games in Sydney, Australia.

  4. K.C. Jones. American basketball player and coach. Member of 1956 Olympic gold medal winning US basketball team in Melbourne. Winner of two NCAA titles with the University of San Francisco in 1955 and 1956. Winner of 11 NBA titles with the Boston Celtics, eight as a player, one as an assistant coach and two as a head coach. He also won an NBA title as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1972. Age 88.

  5. Tan Eng Bock. Water Polo. Singapore. 1956 Summer Olympics

     

    SINGAPORE - Former national water polo captain and coach Tan Eng Bock died on Monday (Nov 30) morning after suffering a stroke. He was 84.

     

    Along with his brothers Eng Chai and Eng Liang, who were also part of the national team, Tan excelled in the sport. He captained the national team to their first South-east Asian Peninsular (Seap) Games title in 1965, starting a glorious undefeated run that ended only last year.

     

    Besides being a three-time Seap Games winner (1967 and 1969), he was also an Asian Games gold medallist in 1954 and an Olympian at the 1956 Melbourne Games.

  6. Helsinki 1952 Olympic high jump champion Walter Davis dies at age of 89

     

    Walter “Buddy” Davis, the 1952 Olympic high jump champion, has died at the age of 89, it has been announced.

     

    After winning his Olympic gold medal in Helsinki, he played a role in helping the Philadelphia Warriors and St. Louis Hawks win National Basketball Association (NBA) championship titles.

  7. Double Olympic medallist and former world record-holder Foulds dies

     

    British sprinter June Foulds, who won Olympic medals in 1952 and 1956 and set numerous world records in relay events, died this week at the age of 86.

     

    Foulds was a member of the Great Britain team that won the bronze medal in the 4x100m relay in 1952 and the silver medal in 1956.

    These Games will see the inclusion of two mixed relays in swimming, the mixed quadruple sculls in rowing, and the return of 4 weight classes each to the sports of judo and taekwondo. Football is no longer a compulsory sport at these Games.

  10. South American Games in 2022 delayed due to "unpredictable" COVID-19 pandemic

     

     

    The 2022 South American Games in Asunción have been delayed by five months due to the "unpredictable" COVID-19 pandemic.

     

    Paraguay's capital city was initially scheduled to stage the event from April 26 to May 9 in 2022, but it will now take place in October that year.

     

    The South American Sports Organization (ODESUR) has confirmed the Games will be held from October 1 to 15 instead.

     

    It comes after ODESUR received a request from the Government of the Republic of Paraguay to postpone the start of Asunción 2022 because of the "health emergency that the region is experiencing" due to COVID-19.

  11. Fernando Lopes. Angola. Swimming. Age 55.

     

    Angolan Olympic Committee (COA) secretary general António Monteiro paid tribute to Fernando Lopes - the country's flagbearer at the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games - who has died aged 55.

     

    Lopes was a swimmer in the 100 metre and 200m backstroke events, but competed in the 4x100m medley relay at Moscow 1980 when he was 15-years-old.

     

    He was the youngest member of the Angolan delegation at the Games and carried the country's flag during the Opening Ceremony.

  12. Vietnam names four more disciplines for 2021 Southeast Asian Games

     

    Host Vietnam has decided to include triathlon, bowling, jiu jitsu and esport in next year's Southeast Asian Games.

     

    The Southeast Asian Games Federation Executive Committee approved them at a recent online meeting and will make a formal announcement in November.
