@heywoodu would know more, but I think this sort of scheme is focused on sweeping the small-time races in Portugal. They purposely choose the most blatant doping methods which would never fly at Tour de France anymore, for example.

I always dreamed about a Czecho-Slovak bid, but a HU/SK one would be awesome as well

Eventful day for our ski jumping. First the ladies with the triple win. Sad end of career for Špela Rogelj, she had a good run, but never reached the top. I'm really bummed that she didn't have a chance to win an Olympic medal, as she would have gotten one for sure in the team event if the ladies had one.  Axe the head coach has resigned due to the differences with the federation. This does not bode well ahead of our home world championship next season.
I can only speculate, but I wouldn't be surprised if they offered him the same amount of money with no bonus as to what he has achieved with this team. I just hope that whoever replaces him is not the cheapest option like Bertoncelj was for the men. That took the Zajc affair to get rid of him.

As for the men. Relatively easy victory in the flying world champs. Wasn't worried for a second that the gold was ours.

    Two observations:

    - Interestingly, nary a peep from one of the biggest Putin fans in this forum.
    - Secondly, to those posters from the Magreb who cheer on Russia: I get you hate the US. You really do. But I assume you wouldn't be happy if a regional power attacked your country. So it is one thing to hate the USA and other is to cheer on another country invading its neighbor.

I agree this time that this whole ROC/OAR etc. thing is a farce. It is not a real sanction but still makes possible for the Russian to play the victim and whine that "again the poor blameless Russia is being humiliated". It the worst of both worlds.
Dont think it does anything against doping which was the objective in the first place.

    Welcome.

I have no doubt there are bribes & corruption, but in this case China got the Games because of a scandal in Norway (the logical candidate) related to the excessive demands of the IOC for luxury hotels, private jets, limos etc.

However the problems we have this time are because IOC President Thomas Bach (Gold Medal, Fencing, 1976*) is a foolish egotistical man - not very corrupt in the normal sense - who thinks he is a globe-trotting international diplomat whose mission is to bring Peace to the World.  And not what he is, a sports bureaucrat whose job it is to stage the best possible sporting competition - which is, in itself, a very worthy goal.  Unfortunately this petty vanity means the world’s least attractive leaders find him very easy to manipulate

Well, Norway may have broken our shared gold medal record, but Canada tied the bronze medal record today (ROC is there, too).  If a certain country is ultimately DQed from figure skating, we may have already broken it.

Let's be honest, the whole Olympic Movement is rotten, from the selection to the host cities, the way horses are treated in equestrian and modern pentathlon, the corrupt judging in boxing, etc., the sex abuse cases, the systemic doping (not just by Russia) there are so many problems but this is such a brazen example. The Olympic GAMES were meant to be for the love of the sport, but this is literal child abuse by unscrupulous people thinking "victory at all costs", because a gold medal is clearly worth destroying a child physically and mentally.

Thank you. And it's baffling how many people still turn a blind eye to their abuses. I'm also disgusted by Viner in rhythmic gymnastics and the Deriuginas in Ukraine. How can people just pretend these people are not toxic or that there's nothing to discuss about them? There's even a whole MOVIE where Viner humiliates and disrespects Margarita Mamun, and she is just called a "tough" coach. It's just unbelievable.

This entire thing just reminds me how sport competitions involving children should be put under heavy regulation. Even adult athletes are in constant danger because of how demanding these competitions are both physically and mentally, it's ridiculous that IOC and everyone involved with sports are allowed to do this to children. Professional sport is not healthy, we all know that. People shouldn't be part of it until they are old enough to make the decision for themselves to commit to this lifestyle. Children should just have fun with sports and be healthy, and that can't be achieved in the current system.

Personally I would do something very drastic: declare that the age limit is 21 years for every sport at the Summer and Winter Games, while the Youth Games would be for athletes between 17 and 20. (it would be even better to have the Youth Games every 2 years for athletes who are either 19 or 20 years old)

If she wasn't under the age of 16 she wouldn't have been allowed to compete. Ask any other athlete that have been provisionally suspended then cleared how fair it was for Valieva to be allowed to compete here.

Valieva is getting preferential treatment on account of her age, and that's kind of problematic given it's happening at the Olympics.

Though what really angers me is that I feel I'm seeing the next abuse scandal involving children's well being being sacrificed at the altar of sports, and the reaction in some corners is simply to dismiss it entirely. There were already a lot of red flags around Sambo 70 before this whole doping situation.
