National record for Ulises Saravia in the 100 BK semis and #2 time to the finals  I expect Diehl and and Knedla to battle for gold, but he has a good shot for bronze.

We have the best entry time in W 800, 1500 and 4th best in 400? I'm hopeful now.

I think it’s fine in this case. Both athletes clearly and visibly gave it their best effort and ended on the same height with very similar scorecards. It’s probably about as close as you can get to a “dead heat” tie in field events.

I’m not really bothered by the tie here or at Tokyo. It still isn’t a super common outcome, and there’s no point in risking injuries due to exhaustion or risky tactics once the competition has reached a “natural” conclusion under the rules.

Ya but even if you are the more competitive athlete... what is the downside, really? Especially at the Olympics where you don't have to share prize money.

Even if the odds for the jump-off are *really* loopsided, you take a 100% chance to win a shared gold over a 75% chance to win a solo gold any day.

3 classes have already finished their preliminary races and from tomorrow they will be divided into gold/silver/bronze fleet, with only those on the gold fleet competing for the medals and the Olympic Quota Places

    the situation so far...

men's Skiff (49er), 10 OQP available, 9 races completed, 6 to go before the medal race

everything still very open, even if  and  look to be the clear favourite for gold and silver and the top 7 have built quite some margin over the rest of the fleet for the medal race and the OQPs

already with the gold medal in their hands,  and  look to have a slight advantage over the rest of the field for the "minor" medals and then we have a fleet divided into more small groups with a hole in between them (5th to 9th, 10th to 13th, 14th to 17th) but all of them still fighting for the last OQPs
those from the 20th place on, look to be already out of contention for all the targets

are back to their usual dominant form (they've won all the races but 1 -when they were 2nd- so far) and are likely to win another world title
look strong and have a small margin over  in the fight for silver and bronze
and  are also still in contention for the medals and all the top 5 look safe for the OQP
the remaining 4 OQPs should go to those currently placed up to the 10th place, with only  still having a remote chance to make the medal race, but it's a big if, as they are already 11 points behind  and have the 3rd Italian crew (2020 world champions Bissaro/Frascari) in between
the next eligible crew  are already 31 points off the current 10th place

    1) But you are ignoring it. You've basically decided that a historically fast (#5 all time) short course 1500 isn't indicative of ability in the long course version which isn't untrue. And then you're comparing the 14:31 to his 14:10 from a year and a half ago as though he's supposed to have not progressed since then at all. At around the same age as Hafnaoui and Short Wellbrock had quite a lot of progression as well (see bottom).

    2) Yes, it's easier to avoid incompetiton testing if you don't compete but as far as I can see Hafnaoui competed at more in season pool meets (complete with anti-doping because they were all top tier pro meets (TYR Pro and Mare Nostrum)) than Wellbrock did but he just didn't rest for them so the times aren't fast. I also imagine Hafnaoui is easy to find on Indiana University campus for out of competition testing.

    3) Winnington and Short were really the only two contenders because Neill has shifted focus to IMs and and Horton just hasn't been good for years. Short also went 3:42 unrested in season in April.

Just going over Wellbrock's progression in the 1500 to see what he was like around the same age as Short and Hafnaoui and Wellbrock dropped his 1500 PB by 19 seconds in 2018 alone which is more than Short did this year.

    Wellbrock
    2016  14:55.49
    2017  15:01.34
2018  14:36.15  <-- 19 second drop from PB, 25 second drop from previous season

    Short
    2021  14:57.22
    2022  14:48.54
    2023  14:37.28   <-- 11 second drop

If Hafnaoui had swum a long course 1500 at the end of 2021 instead of a short course one his long course PB would've been a lot faster already (probably low 14:40s) so the drop he had this year would have been smaller.
