Never understood why the IOC can't overtake running weightlifting for 2024 like it did with boxing for 2020

intoronto got a reaction from Topicmaster1010 in Post Games Analysis | How do you analyse your country's performance at Tokyo 2020?
    1. Rate the performance on a scale of 1-10

8-9. Not perfect, but close too it. Room for growth.

    2. What were the surprises and  heartbreaks ?
Surprises - I think all of the medals Canada won were more or less expected (or were a medal contender), the women's soccer team winning gold was a mild surprise for me. Non-medalist surprises: The emergence of 14 year old Summer McIntosh, which bodes well for the next quad (three years). Heartbreaks: Melissa Bishop going out in round 1 of the 800m, the women's basketball and rugby teams, which were medal contenders failed to get out of the group stage. The women's foil team also failing to medal was a heartbreak for me, I thought they would bring home Canada's first fencing medal.  Rose MacLeannan coming from a really bad injury 9 weeks before the games to finish fourth was hard to take, as was the women's diving 10m platform, same injury and less than a point for a medal (at least it saved Mexico from finishing fourth in all synchro events )

    3. Was your country's goal achieved?
There was no goal set, but having the highest amount of medals in one games (excluding LA84 which was boycotted) + equaling the most gold in one edition (again excluding LA84) has to be considered as achieving (and perhaps exceeding) any goal that would have been set.

    4. Which are the sports that will be invested more in future?
-Rowing/Swimming/Athletics need more funding to get more results.
-Cycling (especially track) looks like its on the upswing.
-I fear wrestling will lose most if not all of its funding for the next 3 years.

So I just read on Instagram that Drew Mechielsen raced in Tokyo and made it to the final with a broken foot she didn't know about till after she got home.

I was looking at other nations numbers and Germany seems to have the exact same problem than us witch very similar numbers. Since 2012, on average, they have 'lost' 6 medals and 2.8 golds each winter and summer olympics vs the last world championships (-5.6 and -2.4 for France)

Now, we understand why @OlympicsFanis constantly angry.

As you know, e sports were actually close to be selected for Paris. Fortunatelly, there was someone in IOC who had more than 1 functioning brain cell so luckilly we wont watch Call of Duty at least until LA.

In 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 Greek women won the same amount of medals as Greek men. This time Greek men won 4 medals and Greek women on 0 medals. First time since 1988 that Greek women didn't win any medals.

We had Stefanidi get 4th in pole vault, Sakkari in mixed doubles 5th, Bourmpou/Kyridou 5th in rowing, Korakaki 6th in two shooting events, Tzeli 7th in taekwondo, Teltsidou 7th in judo, Drisbioti 8th in 20km walk, Kyriakopoulou 8th in pole vault, Ntountounaki 9th in 100m butterfly, Karachaliou 9th in sailing etc.

We are similar to Canada in a way, based on what @JoshMartini007said, because we also are generalists and don't focus on specific sports. All 4 of our medals this year were in different sports. In Rio we won 6 medals all in different sports except 2 shooting medals which were from the same person. In London and Beijing we also did not win more than 1 medal in a single sport. In this way I think Greece and Canada are similar.

As one of the most active National Threads on Totallympics, I would like to inform you that if you are interested I could create a sub-domain only for Canadian sport fans, named like canada.totallympics.com (and where instead of canada we can put any word you prefer), with the same structure of Totallympics (sections, threads etc.).

You can find more info in this thread. Let me know if you are interested

Sad it's over, glad we got to have it finally.  Not long till Beijing 2022, and I just happen to live here (currently going through a Covid outbreak, though).

I think we saw that with the games here. They were very open to changes. The velodrome for ex. Had 3200 seats vs 5000+ in others....which leaves me to understand if Toornto to bid, then the Milton velodrome would be acceptable.

With Bevridge's 9th place in the omnium, that concludes Canada's participation at Tokyo 2020!

Hopefully all of us will stick around and cheer our athletes in the non-Olympic period.

No they are not. They are only approved around the Winter Olympics. Likely the 2022 ISSF Championships will be the first one to hand out quotas as per tradition.
