  7. The push comes from Russian money. Nobody is bribing them to ban Russians, but they sure get a lot of money if they cancel the ban. Fencing is a small sport where Russians have a ton of influence as they are one of the three top European nations besides Italy and France. I am sure certain people in FIE got their bribes. It's very important for Russia to have their athletes at the Games, they know it very well that it would be a big win for them on the international stage as it would be a sign that the world doesn't care enough about the war or Ukraine to sever ties with Russia and its people for a longer period of time.

  12. well, not really but Albania is hosting MEK I mean those 80 years old guys are not really dangerous right now (they used to be but that was long time ago) but Iran and Albania are not the best friends at the moment and a youth weightlifting team is "expandable" for those old corrupt politicians (they don't even know what it takes to be an athlete), I'm sure they would send a team if it was a senior World Championship ps: I think people here are not familiar with MEK, it's hard to explain this super weird group/cult, let's say they are the Iranian version of IS

  35. This is why I don’t understand the push to include Russians and Belarusians as neutrals. I mean, I understand the moral argument behind it, but from a business and public relations stand point, I really don’t get it. There were not NOCs lining up to cancel and boycott events when those athletes were banned, even the nations viewed as more sympathetic to those athletes were not really making it a front page issue. It may not have been an ideal status quo, but it was a tenable business/operations/public relations environment. Now, fencing, and depending on IOC decisions this week, maybe the rest of international sport, have been thrown right back into uncertainty and politically fraught environments. It just seems detrimental to the global image and business opportunities of international sport.

  36. I wonder what will happen with the European Championships. They can't do anything about it, it's part of the European Games and it will be Poland. There's no way that Poland will allow Russians there and it would look awful if they take fencing out of the European Games just because FIE wants Russians to be part of this sport. And the most important of it all: what does Italy think? Because they are hosting the World Championships. Russians will have an incredibly hard time to qualify to Paris if they can't attend the WCh. And it would obviously be an enormous scandal if Milan cancels the WCh. And there are also two more WC events in Europe this season, in and . FIE can't possibly move the entire fencing calendar out of Europe.

  37. Obviously impossible to predict this early. I think the following records in olympic events are safe: Men's 50/400/800 free, men's 100/200 breast, men's 200 back, men's 400 free relay, men's medley relay, women's 50/800/1500 free, women's 100 breast, women's 200 fly, women's 200 IM. The 3 records in olympic events for each gender that are (in my opinion) the most likely to be broken: Men: 400 IM, 100 free, 200 IM/200 fly/100 back Women: 200 back, 100 fly, 400 free/100 back/200 breast/400 IM/800 free relay Number of world records in olympic events that were broken at the last 5 world championships: 2013: 2 (both by Ledecky) 2015: 5 (4 on the women's side (2 of them by Ledecky) + the mixed medley relay) 2017: 5 (4 on the women's side + the mixed medley relay) 2019: 4 (2 on both sides, but the 2 on the women's side were both in relays) 2022: 2 (both on the men's side) -> From 2013 to 2017 not a single world record on the men's side was broken (but 10 on the women's side), but at the last two editions all 4 individual records that were broken were on the men's side. So if i would have to guess the number of records that will be broken, i would say 3 or 4. Also interesting: Oldest world record on the men's side: 400 IM (Phelps in 2008) Oldest world record on the women's side: 200 free (Pellegrini in 2009) Records on the men's side that were set before 2010: 50 free, 200 free, 400 free, 800 free, 200 back, 400 IM, 400 free relay, 800 free relay Records on the women's side that were set before 2010: 200 free, 200 fly

  40. Iran withdrew from this competition for "security concerns" that happened something like 10 days ago, feel really sorry for those kids they trained probably weeks and months for this event, it sucks how easily some old stupid corrupt politicians can ruin careers of young athletes.
