  1. South Korea's Moon Dae-Sung, who beat Nikolaidis in the final at the 2004 Olympics, traveled to Thessaloniki, Greece to visit Nikolaidis' grave. He told reporters that he had a very strong relationship with Nikolaidis, and that he was sorry that it took him so long to visit his grave. I think this is a really beautiful story and it shows the Olympic spirit. 2. Good evening, afternoon and morning! On another forum, someone opened a thread with a game which seemed like fun, and even more so on a forum like Totallympics, with enthousiasts from all over the world and a wide variety of sports: Guess the Record! The rules are rather simple: 1. Someone posts a sports-related record. This may be an officially recognized world record, it may be the highest number of wins in some sport, the fastest ever goal, you get the point. 2. Others try to figure out which record it is. It doesn't have to include the owner of the record, but of course it would be fun if you know those things as well. Main thing is that you get correct which record it is. 3. The user who gets it correct first (as judged by the person who posted the record) gets a point, and can post a different record as described in point 1, preferably also updating the score table. If it takes several hours for the 'winner' to post a new record, someone else can step in and post one. Obviously the point is to not search for it online. If you search for the record, we will most likely never know, but you will have to live with the guilt of being a cheater. The person who posted the record is free to post some hints if it takes too long, at his or her own discretion. Game on! And to get it going, I'll start with a simple one: 9,58 seconds

  3. Different countries do different things. The old Communist countries usually take FISU very seriously & send strong teams. Here in we have one recognised Sports University, and others which have specific programmes which produce lots of international athletes, like obviously Oxford & Cambridge in Rowing or Stirling in Swimming. Otherwise our young Olympic-track athletes are kept on the circuit where they are earning international points for FIS, ISU etc. Probably the only athletes here who really have serious ambitions for the future will be the two Curling teams, because there aren't that many serious international Curling competitions out there. But it's still fun, because all sport is good when it is between athletes on the same level. Doesn't have to involve Messi & Benzema to be exciting.

  11. It is a record. It does NOT come from the sport of cycling. A solid guess though.

É incrível como vira ano e o handebol continua a mesma coisa de sempre, às vezes piora como agora. Muito talento desperdiçado. Sobre o mundial, vamos ver, né? Antes de tudo, amistoso é amistoso.

  16. I actually can appreciate this tournament more if it’s just a bunch of university level players getting an international experience they otherwise wouldn’t without this tournament. I think those are the players this event should be for in some ways (developmental for younger athletes or last hurray for older athletes unlikely to compete at a higher level).
    1 point
  17. Oh well, that's often the level of university sports in general, apart from those 3-4 countries that take it somewhat seriously (and the main one isn't even there of course)

  18. I guess all the decent players of that age are on pro contracts & thus ineligible. Even in only a few University teams in any sport are heading to international kevel.

  24. Is that by any chance the duration of the longest ever ice hockey match? I think I remember there was a crazy game in Norway 2-3 years ago (?) with OT after OT after OT I think it broke the record of a KHL match not long before that, but I'm not entirely sure. And maybe I am totally wrong, but ice hockey is definitely the first sport I'm going to think about when you ask it

  26. Hey LDOG, I'm sorry I first reply know to your comment now. I wanted to try out this system for this prediction contest. I'm aware that the goals per games are higher than in Football. It could be that this system would end up in very few perfect predict scores. Less than 4-5 for the best predictors. If that end up being the case, then the system would have obviously been to harsh and involving too much randomness than fair. It was from my side an attempt/try out to see if this system could fit in a Field Hockey prediction contest. If the perfect scores end up being very few, then this attempt has proven to be a wrong choice from my side.

  27. Yes my friend, The maximum number of teams participating in the World Winter Games in team sports is: 10 in curling (both genders), 12 in men's ice hockey and 8 in women's (it should be noted that this number was never reached, the highest number was 7 in 2015 and 2017) and in some cases it is normal to use the ranking of the base categories or else the results of the editions previous. On this year Summer Games.FISU had to make another draw on the collective events,as originally Canada,Australia,UK and New Zealand withdrawn for the Chengdu Games, but they maybe turn back of this decison.

  31. A quite rare situation in Adelaide this week. In the final qualifying round, Kwon Soon-woo lost to Tomas Machac. However, he got in the main draw as a lucky loser and was drawn against... Machac in the first round. This time he won and qualified to the second round, where he defeated no2 seed Pablo Carreno Busta earlier today.

  32. I thought that it was impossible to make it worse than the last couple of Winter Games in terms of scheduling... but here we have an absolute sh*t personally, having Fencing and Swimming finals at the same time in the first week is a disaster, then we have to add Athletics in the weekend in the middle. finally, in the second week, we have Wrestling, Taekwondo, Weightlifting, Athletics medal sessions and most of the team sports playoffs matches running at the same time in the 7.30/11 p.m. slot. c'mon, man! p.s. and also the Athletics schedule is just...crazy... how can you run 4 times the 800m in 4 days always at their best? and pretend that the athletes don't give themselves some kind of chemical help just to try and face that challenge?

  43. Some special thanks to @Sindo for supporting the return of the awards, even when I thought it wouldn't be successful. To the members who helped me with projects for the awards: @Dragon @Games and Rings @intoronto @JoshMartini007 @Mkbw50 @Olympian1010 @Vojthas. And of course to all the 38 of you who voted (list here) or followed the awards As I followed the same format of the previous editions (which were almost a decade before), I'm aware that some things need to change. Hopefully, by the end of this year we'll have more time to discuss all the suggestions made here in order to improve our awards.
