  2. This week’s World Championships definitely represents a big step forward for Team GB compared to the last few years and the disastrous Tokyo regatta. Given our relative strength in the sport, I was surprised to discover that this is the first time since 2016 that GB have won a gold medal at the rowing world championships outside of the para-rowing classes. Using this week to project Olympic qualification, Britain would have qualified in all 11 of the boat categories that they entered – an improvement of 2 compared to the WCs of 2019. The biggest step forward arguably came from Ukraine who would qualify 5 boats – compared to 0 in 2019 – which is no mean feat given everything that is going on in the country. New Zealand and Italy haven’t had a vintage year with New Zealand qualifying in just 4 events compared to 9 previously and Italy dropping from 8 to 4. Good to see Japan making progress post Tokyo. Ryuta Arakawa’s victory in the B-Final would be an Olympic qualifying spot and would possibly be the first time that a non-Chinese boat had qualified through the World Championships route. Still a year to go before the qualification regatta, but I think Team GB will be very happy with their performances this year and if they can get a good winter of injury free training, they could be on track for largest rowing squad since London 2012.

  3. We need a bit of perspective here. At the "disastrous Tokyo regatta" GB had nine top four finishes in the fourteen Olympic classes compared with eight top three finishes this year. The truth is there is often only a small gap between what is regarded as success and failure. GB's performance was disappointing last year but not the disaster it has been painted in some quarters and congratulations to them for turning things around so quickly. Congratulations too to the Netherlands on a series of great performances across a range of boats. Also pleased to see a resurgence in Romanian rowing with the promise of more to come after they topped the medal table at this month's European U23 championships. Great performances too from Ireland who are improving and growing and Ukraine given the circumstances in which they have had to prepare and perform. Disappointing from Australia - no golds, when did that last happen - New Zealand, the US and Canada. How much of this is down to lost competition after Covid? And finally Germany with an outstanding men's sculler and then pretty much nothing. No German men's eight in the A final 🙄. What has happened to German rowing? Overall an interesting regatta with some great racing. The next two years are going to be fascinating.

  5. I've done an appraisal of the Irish performance here at this year's Rowing World Championships and it has been a hugely successful championships for our team. Overall picture: 1 gold and 2 bronze in Olympic class events 4 A-Finals in Olympic class events If we were to project forward 12 months, 5 boats would qualify to Paris 2024 if they replicate these results at the next World Championships while the men's four and men's double sculls finish just one and two places outside of the qualifying spots respectively. On evidence of this World Championships, if all these crews continue to progress, they all have a decent chance of making it to Paris 2024. The 2 crews who were furthest away from what would be a qualifying spot, the men's and women's single sculls, are both 20 years-old and making their senior championship debuts so there is still hope we can make sufficient progress in the next 12-18 months. I can't wait to see what the men's four do over the next season, 8th place on their senior debut was a phenomenal result for this young crew. I am hoping they can make it into the qualifying spots at next year's worlds. 6. The current situation in Iran may have serious effects on our national teams in different sports. This time is different and everybody is forced to take a side, some athletes even take it further and already withdrew from their teams. (which is stupid IMO) since it's almost everybody (I mean famous athletes), it will be hard for the regime to punish some of them later but who knows, some of these animals (who consider Taliban as their role model) don't even care about sports and will be happy not having it at all.

  7. I'm copying @OlympicIRLhere and doing the same for the Greek team Overall picture: 3 A-Finals in Olympic class events 1 silver and 1 5th place in non-Olympic class events If we were to project forward 12 months, 3 boats would qualify to Paris 2024 if they replicate these results at the next World Championships. It's also important to note that our men's lightweight double sculls and women's pair would have very good chances as well in my opinion (we did not send crews to Racice for those boats). As I mentioned before Fragkou/Natsioula are super young and for various reasons were not well-prepared for these Championships. If they stick together I think they'll improve a lot over the next 12-18 months and qualify for Paris. Fragkou won gold this year in the women's pair at both the World U23s and European U23s, while Natsioula won gold in the women's double at the European U19s, World U19s (with a world's best time), and European U23s. Together they rowed twice in the past, winning bronze in 2020 at the European U19s, and gold in 2021 at the European U19s, so this was actually the first time they didn't win a medal together. Papakonstantinou won silver in the men's lightweight single and also won gold in that event last month at the European Championships. He is only 23 yo and has a lot of experience and has won a lot of medals at the U23 level. For example, last year he won gold in the men's lightweight single at the World U23s. Obviously he needs a good partner to compete in the lightweight double as the lightweight single is not an Olympic event. 21 yo Petros Gkaidatzis won gold three weeks ago in the men's lightweight single at the European U23s. Him and Papakonstantinou have rowed together in the past, winning gold in the men's lightweight double at the 2019 European U23s. I think we'll qualify in the women's pair. In Tokyo we had 20 yos Christina Bourmpou and Maria Kyridou finish 5th in the A Final. Neither competed here in Racice as they both study in the United States and had to go back. Bourmpou won gold this summer at the World U23s and European U23s, but had a disappointing European Championships where she finished 6th (with Kyridou they won bronze in 2020 and got 4th in 2021). Kyridou did not compete for the national team this year as her and her sister Anneta (who finished 10th in the women's single in Tokyo as a 22 yo) were suspended from the national team for one year. They are actually training to compete together in the pair... ...which means we have 3 girls but only two spots, which opens up the door for a possible women's four as well...perhaps Fragkou can join them and then Dalidou (gold in W2X at European U19s and World U19s this year) or Gkogkou (gold in W1X at European U19s and World U19s this year) could join Natsioula in the double (and the other can try in the single perhaps)...or we can have both a pair and a four, we also have Argyraki/Asvesta who together in the women's pair won gold at both the European U19s and World U19s this year...plus we have Aspasia Christodoulidis who just won her second consecutive NCAA Championships and recently graduated, or Dimitra Tsamopoulou who has also won an NCAA Championship and will be graduating this year and previously won gold for us at the World U23s with Kyridou in 2019. We could also try to see if the lightweight rower Zoi Fitsiou (who was silver in LW1X at the Europeans and 5th here in Racice) can qualify in W1X... We have a lot of options and need to figure out crews so that next year we can get as many Olympic quotas as possible. Of course a lot can change, for example last year we were not talking about Dalidou or Kontou and now both are on our radar, we'll probably have another one or two teenagers next year who we can consider. I think we should aim to qualify M1X, M2X, W1X, LM2X, W2-, W2X, LW2X, W4-. Then we can also try another men's boat (maybe M2- or M4X) and if we can then W4X but I don't think we have enough athletes for that. It might even be more realistic to try to have some girls double up and qualify the W8+ which is something we have never attempted but seeing Romania and the Netherlands double up, it could be an option for us (though probably an unrealistic dream). 8. Japan’s Kanoa Igarashi and United States’ Kirra Pinkerton were crowned champions today at the World Surfing Games. The event was held at Huntington Beach, United States from September 16th to September 24th 2022. 2020 Olympic silver medalist Igarashi had a perfect competition where he finished first in all eight rounds on route to winning gold. In the final, he finished ahead of Indonesia’s Rio Waida and Australia’s Jackson Baker whom won silver and bronze. Pinkerton had a similar experience, never being relegated to the second chance repechage bracket as she finished either first or second in all of her heats. In the final, her score of 13.63 barely edged out France’s Pauline Ado’s score of 13.00. The bronze medal was won by Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons. The event doubled as the first opportunity for nations to qualify to the 2024 Olympics. The highest ranked nation from the men’s and women’s team points ranking qualified a spot to the games. Up to three surfers contribute to their nation’s ranking based on the placing they achieved with the winner getting 1000 points, second receiving 860 points, third obtaining 730 points and so on. Buoyed by their individual championship title, the winner of the team points competition was Japan for the men and the United States for the women. The Olympic quota is awarded to the nation and it is up to the respective National Olympic Committee to choose which athlete will compete. As a reminder, despite the 2022 World Surfing Games occurring first, it is actually lower on the quota hierarchy which could have some implications. Should the nations which won a quota today win a third quota from the team points ranking at the 2024 World Surfing Games, the quota won here will be reallocated to the second-place nation, specifically the United States for the men and Australia for the women. The next opportunity for surfers to qualify to the Olympics will be at the 2023 World Surfing Games.

  9. Introducing text about No. 1c "WHERE CAN I GO TO?" map of our tour PILSEN (Plzeň) Population: 168 449 p. The 4th biggest town in The Czech Republic. The city was founded in 976 as a fortress of the Přemysl princes. It was considered one of the three most important trade centers of the Czech lands (during the 14th century). In the 19th century, industry developed intensively here, there was created automobile brand Škoda or the famous brewery with beer brand Pilsner Urquell. Pilsen is located on undulating terrain, where the Berounka river is formed by the confluence of four smaller rivers (Mže, Radbuza, Úhlava and Úslava). The city is overflowing with beautiful architecture, I will only introduce you to the very basics. You can't miss St. Bartholomew's Cathedral because it has the highest church tower in the Czech Republic (102.26 m). Cathedral is in the Gothic style and it's located in the center of the city. The Franciscan monastery was founded in 1300. It is built mainly in the Renaissance style. The Franciscans were representatives of a minority order under the Roman Catholic Church. The monastery was heavily damaged during the Hussite siege (1433). The Great Synagogue is also located in Pilsen, which is the largest building of this type in the Czech Republic and the third largest in the world (after the ones in Jerusalem and Budapest). Before the start of the Second World War, the Nazis tried to bomb the synagogue, but the action failed. In 2014, the modern New Theater building was opened, which was built according to the design of Portuguese architects. The building is located near the Cathedral of St. Bartholomew. Although Pilsen is a culturally rich city, no significant sporting events are held here. However, the best Czech football team - FC Viktoria Plzeň - is based here. OLOMOUC (Olomouc) Population: 99 564 p. The 6th biggest town in The Czech Republic. An university town with great history. The city lies on the Morava River in an elongated fertile valley. It is the center of the cultural area of Haná. As early as 1253, it was declared a royal trading town, but continuous settlement of the area appeared as early as the beginning of the 11th century. The city is known for its archbishopric and the second oldest Czech university (Palacký's University) is also located here. The historical core of the city is made up of a former fortress, the foundations of which are still preserved today. It is the largest fortress in the Czech Republic, which was in operation from the end of the 13th century until 1886. Most of the city's monuments can be found on the territory of the fortress. In the middle of Upper Square there is a town hall with an astronomical clock. While the current form of the town hall was created in 1474, the astronomical clock was damaged during the Second World War. The new clock was created in 1955 with the theme of socialist realism. On the same square we can also find the Column of the Holy Trinity - the only UNESCO monument in Olomouc. The column was built by a group of Czech Baroque sculptors. It is so large and tall that you can go inside, where is a small chapel. This unique baroque work is the largest column and at the same time the largest sculpture in the Czech Republic. České Budějovice (České Budějovice) Population: 93 083 p. The 7th biggest town in The Czech Republic. King Přemysl Otakar II. founded the city in 1265. The city firstly fulfilled the function of diplomatic meetings between the House of Luxembourg and other families, then due to religious changes, the city became the target of conflicts. Today, the city is very interesting, especially from the architectural side. The Black Tower is originally a guard and signal tower from the 16th century. Today it is open to the public, above the clock there is a walkway with a view of the entire city. The Salt House is a smaller building that dates back to the Renaissance. It served as a warehouse for grain and later salt. The Rabenstein tower is one of the two preserved fortification towers from the 14th century. The tower was primarily used as a warehouse for weapons and gunpowder, then as a prison. Today you will find an exhibition of armor and historical weapons there. A representative of modern architecture is, for example, the Piano administrative center, built between 2016 and 2018. Hradec Králové (Hradec Králové) Population: 90 679 p. The 8th biggest town in The Czech Republic and also residence of @Hipooo!!! This city was originally a royal city, but king Wenceslas II. dedicated it to the Czech queens. It functioned as the commercial center of Eastern Bohemia and today it is also an important cultural and university center. The city is nicknamed the Salon of the Republic because the city center is filled with many buildings from the 20th century. Today, the city is world famous for its Petrof brand pianos. The White Tower is very similar to the Black Tower in České Budejovice because it was designed by the same person. You can also climb the White Tower and observe the view not only of the city, but with good visibility you can also see the highest point of the Czech Republic - Sněžka, which is almost 60 km from the city. The Museum of Eastern Bohemia is an Art Nouveau brick building with various permanent and seasonal exhibitions. Adalbertinum is a social house built at the end of the 19th century in a style with elements of Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Baroque. The building is used for social and cultural activities. The Ulrich Square is a place lined with functionalist buildings. Today, the Regional Directorate of the Police and ČSOB bank are located here. The Hučák hydroelectric power plant is located in the city center on the Elbe River. This Art Nouveau building has been in operation since 1912 and is supposed to protect the city from floods. YES THIS YEAR'S TOISC 2022 IS HELD RIGHT HERE!! Pardubice (Pardubice) Population: 88 188 p. The 10th biggest town in The Czech Republic with an important railway junction. The first mention of the town dates back to 1295, but it flourished only in the 19th century, when the town was connected to the railway. Since then there has been intensive industrial development and the population has rapidly doubled. Nowadays, Pardubice is famous for Pardubice gingerbread and the Velká Pardubická horse race. The Pardubice Castle is located in the city center and dates back to the Renaissance in 1491. The Municipal Theater is an Art Nouveau building built at the beginning of the 20th century. It is probably the most important theater in Eastern Bohemia. Karlovy Vary (Karlovy Vary) Population: 45 605 p. The 22nd biggest town in The Czech Republic and the biggest czech spa town. Karlovy Vary is not one of the largest cities in the Czech Republic, but it is nevertheless a regional capital and is known worldwide for its spa treatments. The town was founded in 1370 and is located in a relatively steep valley of the Ohře river. The hottest spring Vřídlo (72 °C) is located there. It also hosts an international film festival every year. The list of monuments is really wide. There are four spa buildings in the city (two of which are still spas today) and five colonnades. Since the city has been visited by a number of important figures throughout history, there are a large number of monuments and statues. On the outskirts of the city there are architecturally interesting lookouts, e.g. Goethe's viewpoint. There are a large number of hotels in the city, almost every one of them is in magnificent buildings of art nouveau and romantic style.

    Sport Estivi 2022

  13. What an incredible regatta for the Dutch, wow! It's impressive how well they do when in U19 and U23 events they are rather average. Definitely they have a good system, the opposite of ours where we do so well at the U19 and U23 levels and not so well after that... Pretty disappointing day for us, two 6th place finishes in A Finals. So we had three A Finals here, and all finished in 6th place. For M2X and LW2X they are good results, but I was really hoping Ntouskos could get a medal. Fragkou/Natsioula coming in 15th place overall in W2X (out of 17 crews), once again leading the race at 1000m, this time in the C Final, only to have a poor second half of the race especially the last 500m. I won't be too harsh on them as they are both teenagers and were in different boats all year long and only trained about 10 days together, plus Fragkou was in sweep events all year long and Natsioula recently recovered from Covid which kept her out of training.

  16. You are right that many of the boats were unlucky - none more so than the Lightweight Double who missed the bronze by 1/100th of a second - but the reason many regard it as a disaster is as much to do with what was happening off the water as it was to do with the results. It was clearly not a happy, cohesive team going into Tokyo. We had struggled throughout the Olympic cycle, eventually qualified the smallest number of boats for at least 20 years, the head coach unexpectedly quit, there were suggestions of bullying within the team and then there was the whole 'smug' row after the men's four. Unfortunately success in British sport is, in many ways, measured purely in terms of the number of gold medals won, and a silver, a bronze and a hatful of unlucky fourth places isn't much of a return on a 25mln pound investment.

And nothing in Asia or on the fast tracks of Inzell or Salt Lake City. Major championships this year: Quebec - Four Continents Championships - 2-4 December (right before the World Cups in Calgary) Hamar - European Championships - 6-8 January Heerenveen - World Championships - 2-5 March Junior World Cup Calendar: Seinäjoki - 26-27 November (outdoor) Seinäjoki - 3-4 December (outdoor) Inzell - 4-5 February The Junior World Championships will be from 10-12 February in Inzell, together with the final senior World Cup event. I'm wondering if Jordan Stolz will compete in the senior World Cup finals where he could make good money if he managed to continue his strong form from last season, or in Inzell to compete for some world titles in his final year as a junior.

  26. Papakonstantinou winning silver in LM1X was disappointing, really expected him to win gold. He hadn't lost a race all season, and beat Soares multiple times but couldn't do it yesterday. Fitsiou 5th in LW1X is also a decent result. I figured it would be hard for her to win a medal here. Anastasiadou/Kontou 6th in LW2X is a very good result. Kontou couldn't compete at the Europeans because she tested positive for Covid, so this was a good indication of where they are at. Kontou now should celebrate her 17th birthday and prepare for the 2023 season, which can be huge for her with European U19s, World U19s, European U23s, World U23s (hopefully with gold medals at all) and World Championships where I hope she can qualify for the Olympics. Let's see what happens tomorrow, I hope Ntouskos can win a medal

  38. Ntouskos finishing 2nd in his quarterfinal is a bit disappointing although I still like his chances to win a medal. After all, he finished 2nd in his quarterfinal in Tokyo and still went on to win Olympic gold Papakonstantinou just incredible. 1st in his quarterfinal and 1st in his semifinal. He seems to be the favourite to win gold here. Kalandaridis/Palaiopanos finishing 2nd in their quarterfinal is also good, they're looking in good shape to make it to Paris. Tokyo was a joke where we only had 1 male rower after having 8 male rowers in both London and Rio, so with them doing well it gives us hope to have a bigger team again. Fragkou/Natsioula coming 5th out of 6th in the repechage is disappointing. They led after 1000m and were 3rd after 1500m. It seems they just ran out of gas in the end, but both are just teenagers. They have 3 full days to rest before Sunday's C Final so hopefully they can have a good showing there. I still think this is a boat that can make it to Paris as they are so young and should do much better next year. Fitsiou finished 2nd in her semifinal which is great. She was poor in the heats (4th) but is doing better now. I'm not confident in her winning a medal although I'd happily be proven wrong. Although she's a lightweight rower I'd like to see her try to qualify in the women's single for Paris. Anastasiadou/Kontou making the final is just incredible. They are 20 and 16 (!!!) and made the A Final of an Olympic boat class at the World Championships. Again, I see no reason why we can't expect a medal from them in Paris provided they stay healthy. Both of them (especially Kontou) will probably be so much better in two years.

  40. Recap of Greek boats so far: M1X: Ntouskos won his heat as expected, let's see how he does from here on. Anything less than a medal would be disappointing. LM1X: Papakonstantinou won his heat as expected and I would be surprised if he doesn't take a medal. Need to get him a good partner for the LM2X so he can qualify to Paris. Perhaps Gkaidatzis who won gold at the European U23 Championships in LM1X just a few weeks ago. They already won gold together in LM2X at the 2019 European U23 Championships. M2X: Kalandaridis/Palaiopanos made it to the quarterfinals and let's see what they can do. They both won a lot of medals in the youth categories but struggled so far in seniors, although their 5th place at last month's European Championships shows that they can make it to Paris. LW1X: Fitsiou is not looking too great here after taking silver at the European Championships, although she did win her repechage to advance to the semifinals. I will be happy if she makes the A Final. W2X: Fragkou and Natsioula were disappointing finishing 5th in their heat. Still, they are 19 and 17 so they are young although I expected better from them as both won a bunch of gold medals in U23/U19 categories over the last two years. Hoping for an improved performance in the repechage which would see them qualify for the semifinals. LW2X: Our girls are incredible. 20 yo Anastasiadou and 16 yo (!!!) Kontou finished 2nd in their heat and 1st in the repechage (beating Tokyo 2020 gold medalists Italy). That is amazing for their ages. I am not sure if they can win a medal but the first goal is to make the A Final. If they can make top 6 in 2022, I see now reason why they can't win a medal in Paris when they are older and more experienced. Let's see first how they do here though. I'm disappointed we didn't send a women's pair. Bourmpou/Fragkou won gold at the World U23s and European U23s, but Bourmpou had to go back to Yale University for studies and we put Fragkou in the women's double. Argyraki/Asvesta who won gold at the World U19s and European U19s I guess are too young for this level.

  41. Insane ending at the Talence Decastar heptathlon Dutch Emma Oosterwegel has 9 points to defend on Austrian Ivona Dadic in the 800m. Dadic attacks in the last lap and gets a gap of 1-2 seconds, which is enough. Oosterwegel pulls absolutely everything out of it though, and closes the gap back to a little under 0,7 seconds.....the result? I do not think I have seen that in the recent past
