  1. The qualification window for Judo opened at the end of June and so far there have been 8 qualifying events staged - 2 Grand Slams, 1 Grand Prix and 5 Continental Opens. Annoyingly, the IJF haven't got their act together for the last couple of months and they haven't been publishing the Olympic Ranking list on their website. I've gone through the results from 7 of the 8 qualifying events - I haven't included the results of Tahiti Oceania Open - to generate my own tracker of current qualification position. Couple of caveats: 1) This only covers the top 17 in the rankings (and France as hosts) - it doesn't take into account the continental quotas 2) Russia are included in the list despite the fact that they haven't been competing on the tour. At the moment, the rankings are heavily driven by the results from the Grand Slams and Russia were included in and performed pretty well at the Ulaanbaatar GS. I guess with the World Champs taking place in Uzbekistan, there is a possibility that Russian judokas may be there too. In terms of the team event, at the moment, by my reckoning the following nations would be qualified: It's still early days and a lot will change will change before the end of the qualification window

I'll take a stab at this. For men, the shortest gold medalist I'm sure is Joseph DePietro WL 1948 gold medal in bantamweight. He was 1.40 metes tall. The tallest is Arvydas Sabonis BB 1988 then bronze 1992 for listed at 2.21 m. For Women, the tallest I'm sure is Uljana Semjonova ( nationality) BB 1976 and 1980 listed between 2.10 and 2.16. The shortest is Mariya Filatova Gymnastics 1976 and 1980, 1.36 meters tall. Filatova is also likely the lightest listed at 30 kg. For men, the heaviest gold medalist is probably Leonid Zhabotynsky 1964 and 1968 WL listed at 163 kg. The heaviest woman is Zhou Lulu 2012 WL at 133 kg. Actually, the shortest and lightest men's gold medalist may be the unknow cox of the 1900 pairs event, thought to be around 11 years old.

Winning ugly is what separates champions from the rest. Iga just refused to lose and kept digging. She'll need to play much better in order to beat Pegula and I hope she does, I just can't stand players in their late 20s with one or two 250 titles getting deep in slams. -.- Pegula has been very consistent, yes but in her mediocrity and this mess of an era in WTA. When I remember complaining in 2011 or 2017...

  9. Other qualification news: Road+Track quotas go from 160 in 2019 to 187 in 2023, increase partly due to Cali 2021. Unfortunatley the increase has been offset by the Caribbean championships losing 8 quotas (from 10 to 2, one per gender). Basketball: Top 7 at each FIBA Americup qualify. 3x3: The fields have been doubles to 12 per tournament. Top 4 at FIBA 3x3 AmeriCup in November, + top 6 in WR as of June 30, 2023 will qualify along with Cali winners and Hosts. Diving: Quota increased to 80 (from 70). The other three disciplines (minus) swimming have the same qualification system as in 2019 with same # of quotas Equestrian: Dressage drops from 48 to 44, Eventing drops from 48 to 46, and Jumping goes to 60 from 54. Overall net quota remains the same from 2019 Karate: team kata dropped; individual kata to remain the same. Top 2 from CAC, SA games and Pan AM Championships will qualify, along with champion of NA. Hosts and Cali winners (only in Kumite) also qualify. MP: Same as in 2019. 2022 Pan ams to determine all quotas.

  13. Looks like Serbia was the perfect choice, as Argentina gets a nice 3:0 win and won't be without chances against Brazil as well.

  17. thanks, I didn't know (actually, I've never taken the question into consideration) that splits are considered official times also in Swimming...

  18. I know it's basically impossible to do it 100% accurately but I was just giving some updates for swims I noticed. Splits are definitely official and Grimes' swim is even listed in the FINA rankings. You can even break a WR in a split (the men's 800 WR has been broken quite a few times during a 1500). All of the swims I listed are listed either in the FINA rankings or in the Nuoto Mondiale rankings.

  19. this one isn't so surprising...we already took a big risk against UKR 10 days ago in the world cup qualifiers (game played in Riga)...only Gallinari saved our ass that night (and yesterday he wasn't available because of the bad injury he sustained in the last game before the start of this tournament)... and don't be too surprised if tonight we fully destroy ourselves with another loss to Croatia...

  20. This does not at all seem controversial, but incredibly well focused on the main things: the sports and the athletes. Too bad the 'general public' will be against this, because they don't usually watch for the sports and the athletes, but to cheer for athletes they have never heard of or who might even be known as people who do shitty stuff (cheating, agression, etc), but who happen to have the same nationality in their passport as them. The fans of sports and athletes - who would likely be in favour of more focus on sports and athletes, and smaller focus on the numbers behind a flag - are a large minority, sadly

  25. First winter Olympic medalist Radoslav Židek (Torino 2006 SBX silver) crashed with his plane this evening near to the northern Slovak city of Bytča (He was the pilot) From Slovak media statement: Radoslav Židek, the snowboarder and first athlete who won a medal at the Winter Olympics for Slovakia since the independence (Torino 2006), was allegedly piloting a small motor plane that fell on Tuesday evening around 6:30 p.m. in the cadastral territory of the village of Petrovice in Bytča district. The Žilina Regional Police, TV Markíza and TV JOJ informs about it on its social network. Two men were injured in the fall. According to the police, all emergency services were dispatched to the crash site of the small plane, which subsequently caught fire. "Both men were taken to hospital for treatment. The cause of the fall is currently under investigation," the police added. "We immediately sent rescuers to help. However, the witnesses of the event loaded the injured person, who suffered 2nd degree burns, into a car before the arrival of the crew and took him to the hospital. The crew took him from them, treated him and took him to the hospital," said Alena Krčová, spokeswoman for the Operation Center of the SR Emergency Medical Service. According to spokeswoman Lenka Záteková, one of the participants in the plane crash was admitted to the Faculty Hospital and Polyclinic (FNsP) in Žilina. "The man suffered burns to his face, upper and lower limbs, and the burns cover 30 percent of his body surface. The patient is stabilized, conscious, and has undergone all necessary examinations. Under general anesthesia, our team of medical professionals is currently treating his burns in the operating room of the trauma surgery department," she said. TV Markíza was the first to report that the small motor plane was piloted by our first Winter Olympic medalist, Radoslav Židek. "The Olympian was sitting on the plane with his brother. He managed to get out without major damage after the impact. Radoslav Židek was trapped in the machine," he states. TV Markíza further reported that the plane crashed into a stable. The fire hit the pilot mainly in the area of the face and upper body. According to TV JOJ, the plane had technical problems during the flight and lost thrust. According to the mayor of the village of Petrovice, Anton Pláňavský, the pilot, Radoslav Židek, should have been doused in gasoline during the impact.
