    Mediterranean Games 2022

I am just back from Oran! I am mentally and physically destroyed, there were also delays with the flights first because Oran shut down the airport for some hours when Prince Albert of Monaco had to leave, then because of strikes in France and then because of bad weather in Italy Anyway it was a nice experience and I have met some amazing people. I was working at Artistic Gymnastics which was one of the worst sports for the timings, we had very long days and I was sleeping very few hours per night. We were also eating very bad food, both in the hotel and at the venue. I was able to try a restaurant only once and I really liked the food, but the catering food was really bad. We often had to skip dinner because the hotel's restaurant closed at 11pm and we rarely came back before that time, and around the gymnastics venue there were literally no places where to eat. Transportation was also a huge problem, they were often late, not by 5 minutes but even by 2 hours. In some of these trips I have risked my life We always had the police escorting us to save some time and all the cars wanted to get in between us and the police to also skip the traffic, some of the trips were really crazy and any single driver honked more in this 10km trip than me in my whole life. It was really nice and surprising to see the Artistic Gymnastics venue always full of people, even if Algeria does not have a tradition in this sport. I thought the stadium would have been almost empty and I was totally wrong. I have also received pictures from other venues which were also very full, including the Equestrian one which was even more surprising for me.

As promised, I did some digging and managed to interview the head of their delegation in Oran. 18. Yes. For those of you who weren’t around…..EPO increases red blood cells. However, these cells can clot & give you a heart attack. The only way to stop it is to exercise every eight hours. So that includes the middle of the night (work it out) at about 01:00 in the morning. Back at the height of TdF doping era about 20 years ago, many teams were somehow smuggling huge amounts of equipment into their Hotel Ibis, Formule 1 etc without being noticed by journalists, race officials, the Gendarmerie etc etc

  20. This starts today with v as inaugural game. Format is the same as the water polo WCh: 1st in pool straight to QF, 2nd and 3rd play crossover, 4th eliminated. My overall predictions for the competition... Pool A (Amsterdam-NED) Netherlands: has an interim coach and IMO won't be as dominant as they have been for the last 6 years. Still, they will top this group and are the main favorite for the title. Germany: will be second, terrible h2h vs the dutch in recent times but too good for the other two teams. Ireland and Chile will go face to face for a place in the knockout rounds. They are basically the same level in my opinion, but Ireland has maybe more tournament experience. My prediction: 1 2 3 4 Pool B (Amsterdam-NED) The most difficult to predict pool, I can see any combination as possible for the final standings. England: the top ranked in the pool but also the most beatable top seed by a margin. They have been terrible in pro league this year (7th place). Overall just lacks quality in some positions but usually rises their level for major competitions (OG mostly, due to adding depth with welsh players). Don't see them going further than QFs here but could still top this pool. India: a team that keeps improving every year, extremely solid display in pro league (only team that got a point from our team other than the dutch). However, they still show some inconsistencies from time to time, losing when they are expected to win but also winning when they are expected to lose. Can be the dark horse or totally crash from the beginning. New Zealand: A big question mark. They have only played friendlies vs Australia since Tokyo and nothing else. Their best player (one of the best in world) Michelsen retired after the games and that will undoubtely be a huge loss. I pick them to finish 4th in the pool but wouldn't be crazy if they actually do better than I expect them to. China: now coached by Alysson Annan (NED coach in the previous two olympics) have shown some improvements already in the recent pro league with surprising wins but also dropped quite a few games with big scores. A typical inconsistent asian team based on defense and strong corner routines. Don't see them going further than R16 crossovers. My prediction: 1 2 3 4 Pool C (Terrassa-ESP) Two pools in one, one for 1st place, the other for 3rd place. Argentina: won the recent pro league without losing any game (two away draws vs NED included). Team's looking the most solid they have looked in the past 10 years but still has a few weak points like the corner defense. A negative point: in case they top the pool they are expected to meet the dutch in semifinal, not in the final. Spain: home team and big candidate to be "dark horse" of the competition even though they always are lacking some edge in attack. I expect them to be 2nd in the pool but wouldn't be crazy if they top it. South Korea: no chance to beat ARG or ESP but I expect them to be 3rd. Canada: returning to the competition after decades, not much to expect from them but beating Korea and advancing to knockout rounds isn't an impossible task either. My prediction: 1 2 3 4 Pool D (Terrassa-ESP) Pretty straightforward pool. Australia: like NZL, haven't really done anything since Tokyo. Usually starts tournaments in a high note and disappoints later. I expect them to top this pool. Belgium: Another team with lots of potential that usually disappoints in major competitions. Could beat Australia, top the pool and go on to make a fantastic run but even if they don't I expect them to at least reach QFs. Japan: will finish 3rd in this pool almost certainly. South Africa: will finish last. Weakest team in the competition IMO. My prediction: 1 2 3 4

  22. Let's see if I can be controversial... Aquatics Can't think of a reason to drop or add anything Archery Same - although the thought of an indoor compound archery event is intriguing Athletics OUT - Women's heptathlon, Mixed 4 x 400, walking mixed relay thing IN - Women's decathlon, M & F pentathlon, M & F 50k walk Wild Idea - an Athletics version of cycling's Madison race (The mixed 4 x 4 has got boring since the teams worked out which order to run the men and women to maximum effect and it affected the quality of the other relays) Basketball Not a fan of 3x3 but prepared to give it another chance in Paris Boxing Add 1 more weight for men and 2 more for women, or if the IBA are still going to be useless the drop the sport completely Canoeing Add M C1 200m , F C1 1000m, Slalom Mixed team event Cycling Add M & F Individual Pursuit, M & F Kilo TT, M & F MTB downhill Equestrian No Change Fencing OUT- M & F Epee, sabre, foil team events IN - M & F Combined weapons team event Football OUT - M U23 tournament IN - M Open age tournament (OK, FIFA and the big clubs would block it but you can dream...) Gymnastics IN - M & F Tumbling Golf IN - M & F Team match play Handball No Change Hockey No Change Judo OUT - Team Event Modern Pentathlon Tempted by a relay event but, for now, no change Rowing In - M & F Lightweight Single Sculls Rugby No Change Sailing OUT - Mixed 470 In - M & W 470 Shooting In - M & W Double Trap Taekwondo No Change Tennis No Change Triathlon No Change Volleyball No Change Weightlifting Either add 3 more weights for both M & F or drop the sport completely Wrestling OUT - Greco-Roman IN - 3 more Freestyle weight categories for M & F Climbing I found the speed event interesting in Tokyo but the other two disciplines quite dull. But if you're going to include it you might as well had all three events separately Skateboarding No Change Surfing No Change Breaking OUT - If the judges don't know what the rules are, then why should we care?, "Dude"

  31. With Serbia and Hungary out, we are the only medalists from last year's Olympics that advanced to the semifinals. It's a big opportunity for us... Our senior men's team has won 13 medals across all competitions (including Olympics and World Championships, World League etc), but never a gold (not even in Mediterranean Games). Our goalkeeper got injured today and had to be replaced in the second period, I hope he will be okay to play the rest of the tournament because his replacement is not as good and it shows...
