  6. Strolz gets the win Not as iconic as Marc Berthod's win here in 2007, but still amongst the most surprising in the last decade+. Now this is a "problem" for Austrian federation, since they kicked him out of the national team. And by Austrian rules, whoever gets a WC win, gets a place at the Olympics. They have some decisions on their hands now

  13. Yeah, these six names seem to be a sure call. Beside that, Strolz should also be safe after today's race. Thinking of the Combined event, also Schwarz should get a place. However, AUT should get at least one additional place after reallocation. One or two (from German perspective, hopefully three at least :D) places will surely be reallocated.

  16. It is indeed bizarre how Austria is not having a full team. 9 places is really tight. If we do the count, they'd want 4 speedsters and 5 technicals. Secure places for me have Mayer, Kriechmayr and Striedinger in speed, and Feller, Schwarz, Brennsteiner in tech. Michael Matt should have been there as well, but his abysmal season so far has put a question mark for me. Beyond that, it could swing to different people and last minute decisions.

  17. I’m not really impressed by any of the IBSF’s qualification systems. The change I’d suggest would be to switch to to ranking based allocations for multiple sleds. For example, if you have 3 sleds in the top 15 of the world ranking, then you can have three sleds. If you have two sleds in the top 25, then you can have two sleds. Otherwise, you get one sled.

  18. Well, Spring has a big chance to improve his 7th best result (45 points from Innsbruck 2). Stulnev is within reach. And seeing how Spring is currently ranked 12th at WC, I hope he'll do really well in St. Moritz.

  19. Rip Canada lost its third 4 man sled, due to Covid essentially... though moving forward, I think the 4 man event should be limited to 2 sleds per NOC, which would essentially allow two more countries to compete.

  24. At the moment, Austria only has 9 quota places for men's Alpine skiing (11 being the maximum). Pretty hard qualification system when a nation like AUT is not able to gain the full possible quota here. Even Germany has 6 places (men), but 7 athletes that meet the internal qualification criteria. I also doubt that there will be much reallocation places this year. Other than for prior Games most nations should have more athletes than quota places. However, in Women's Alpine Germany will most likely decline three of its current seven(!) places if nothing sensational happens in the last races. First reallocation places for Men's Alpine at the moment: AUT, NOR, GER, AUT, GER, USA, ITA, FRA. First reallocation places for Women's Alpine at the moment: FRA, FRA, NOR, ITA, CRO, ITA, JPN, FRA.

  28. Is Vinatzer going to win this...? The course seems to be deteriorating rapidly and the first run gaps are pretty small. Vinatzer/Rochat should not be in the top 3 given the large mistakes they made.

The only remaining question is the second pairs spot. Vanessa James and Eric Radford withdrew before the long program and are petitioning for a spot.

  38. On the topic of the Australian Open (if we're allowed to talk about this yet ), it looks like we will have the most Greeks ever at a Grand Slam tournament. We had 5 Greeks across all categories at the 2021 US Open, I think that might have been the previous record until now. As long as nobody withdraws, we have 7 Greeks so far and possibly 8 (if Petros Tsitsipas gets another doubles wildcard ). Stefanos Tsitsipas in men's main draw and Theodoros Mitsakos in boys' qualifying, Maria Sakkari in women's main draw, Valentini Grammatikopoulou and Despina Papamichail in women's qualifying, Michaela Laki in girls' main draw, and Dimitra Pavlou in girls' qualifying. At the 2014 US Open we had zero representatives in any category, so it's nice to see how much progress we have made since then. Also interesting to note that Pavlou is Sakkari's first cousin and this will be her first time at a Grand Slam.

  41. Couple ones. In aerials, the skier is launched straight into the air and travels a very short distance horizontally. In big air the skier is launched forward moreso than upwards. Aerials is a lot like diving - every jump has a degree of difficulty based on the number of flips and spins. Every jump is judged based on form in the air and landing, and that is multiplied by the degree of difficulty to get a final score. Big air is scored more subjectively, with a 0-100 scale. There are no set degree of difficulty. Aerials tricks must be pencilled (i.e. the body of the aerialist should remain as straight as possible) to achieve high form scores. In big air pencilling leads to massive deductions. In big air grabbing the skis during tricks is one of the most important way to increase your score. Grabs are not permitted in aerials. In big air you tan takeoff forwards or backwards (switch). In aerials you can only takeoff forwards. In big air the judges take into consideration whether you did a trick in your natural or unnatural spin direction. This isn’t taken into account in aerials. Even though on the surface big air and aerials look very similar there is zero overlap between the competitors. The techniques used in both are quite different.

  43. Rather boring European Championships this weekend held in Heerenveen. The last international test for most European athletes before the Games. A lot of Russians were in quarantine leading up to the tournament as the their team manager, sprint coach, and Olga Fatkulina (reigning European Champion 500m) were all tested positive soon after arrival in the Netherlands at the start of this week. Therefore the whole Russian team had to stay in their hotel rooms for 5 days, and even missed the first day of the event. Other Russians, including most elite male sprinters had decided last week to stay in Russia. Nils van der Poel had already decided not to compete.
