  1. Results of quarterfinal matches. Greece - Serbia 18-5 Netherlands - Hungary 12-13 Israel - Italy 9-15 Russia - Spain 5-10 That means Russia won't win the title for a third time in a row, as they had won the two previous editions. Spain ran a four-goal streak from 2-2 to 2-6 and controlled the game afterwards. In the other exciting quarterfinal, Hungary took the win, despite being 2-6 down at the beginning of the second quarter and Netherlands holding a 7-9 lead at halftime. Semifinals are scheduled for tomorrow. Greece - Hungary Italy - Spain

  2. I think this is the 7th semifinal for Greek water polo national teams in 2021 Our men's senior team won silver at the Olympics and bronze in the World League. Our men's and women's U17 teams both won silver at the European Championships. Our men's U15 team won bronze at the European Championships, and our women's U15 team got 4th place at the European Championships.

  7. Lets be realistic. I doubt that the spanish public has any considerable interest in winter sports

  8. So, the Russians didn't know the equipment manufacturer for this event is Taishan. They thought it was Senoh, the manufacturer who provided the apparatus for the Olympics. It seems like a minor difference, but Taishan's floors are one of the worst -- maybe the worst -- for gymnasts. It is said to be too stiff and prone to cause injuries. Many gymnasts skip performing on floor altogether when Taishan is their only choice of apparatus. What a shame. A badly attended event with a terrible choice of apparatus supplier. This doesn't seem to bode well.

  12. Yes I also realised that this is the problem with the Indian players. They tend to have a big lead only to squandered away their lead. The MD 2 had such a great lead in the first set but unfortunately they lost in the end.

  13. Our 2nd pair of Arjun / Kapila are really good perhaps even better than the Chinese pair they played against. Yet they seem to be hitting mental block towards end. You have to win being 18-11 in set 1. I think the pair just needs physcological expert and more meditation that's it.

  17. Just some nuance for people not actually clicking the link and only reading the post (if anyone is even still reading a cynical thread like this, hopefully this cynical nonsense will stay out of the actual competition threads once the season gets underway...): there were potentially legitimate explanations for it, related to the menstrual cycle, but those were sadly not investigated further by FIS. Just to clarify that it wasn't like "Oh yeah, you used nandrolone, but whatever".

  20. Before Jabeur only one Arab woman made WTA Top 100 - Selima Sfar. Mayar Sherif has since joined them as the third one. Unlike ATP, Morocco hasn't produced any noteworthy female players over the years (they seemingly have Tunisia instead). Amanda Coetzer (CH #3) is the highest ranked female player from Africa ever (in singles). There were more in doubles (Ilana Kloss, Liezel Huber and Cara Black were all #1 in doubles).

  24. In winter sports there is no growing of the sport. On the contrary even, fewer nations are relevant there year after year. Finland has completely fallen off the cliff, first in ski jumping then in cross country. Germany in alpine skiing and not looking all that great in biathlon either. Canada is gone in alpine skiing too. Czech Republic is gone from ski jumping and we're like one Olympic cycle away from Poland being gone too. The ski jumping struggles to even field 50 jumpers at World Cup level these days if the event is held outside of Europe in Russia for instance. Even if the reason is the growth of freestyle skiing it doesn't explain how former powerhouses are completely irrevelant in certain events. It's been 20 years since the Lahti WC doping fiasco derailed Finnish cross country. That's like two full generations and their answer is a 42 year old RL Roponen? Putting on mixed relays solves nothing. Cross country goes down with inbreeding and will become more irrelevant year by year. Only Norway, Sweden and Russia seem to care about this sport these days and everyone seems to be fine with it. FIS can sell these new ideas but nobody is buying that.

  25. I feel the tensions over the future of Catalonia would worry the IOC - it could all explode at some point.
