  2. Italy breaks the record with 36th consecutive undefeated match They should have won the match though, but just like us, very weak, when it came to the last shot. Berardi with a junior miss in the first half and Jorginho with yet another lame penalty. It's high time they chose someone else to take them. First place is definitely not guaranteed now.

  5. I know, that's why I said that. Half my family is from Quebec and it's definitively the... loudest side. Also the side that is the most fun to party with by some margin.

  12. So in the end Greece only got one gold medal (as well as one silver and one bronze). This is the worst we have done at the European U23s in a while although it was expected because we didn't send our strongest team. Germany also won one gold medal so now they remain in 2nd place in the all-time medal count and Greece still 3rd. Big result for our girls in W2X, they totally dominated and won gold. Evangelia Anastasiadou last year won gold as an 18 year old in LW1X and now in her first year in the U23 category she switches to W2X and challenged herself with 18 year old Evangelia Fragkou and they won gold. Really happy for Fragkou who finally won a gold after three bronze medals (2020 European Juniors, 2021 World U23s, 2021 World Juniors). She should win another medal next month at the 2021 European Juniors. Both Anastasiadou and Fragkou will be in Paris, I'm pretty sure of that. Though Anastasiadou will probably be in LW2X and Fragkou in one of the other sculling events, maybe W2X or W4X. Silver for our boys in M2X. Stergiakas (U23 World Champion) definitely led the way there, as his partner was the 18 year old Exarchou who didn't even make Final A of the recent world juniors (though a lot of the Greek athletes were recovering from covid then so maybe that played a role). I'm pretty confident Stergiakas will be in Paris too. He won gold at the World U23s and European U23s in 2018 and didn't compete for the national team in 2019 or 2020 but now he's back and won gold again at the World U23s (with a stronger partner than Exarchou). Also big result the bronze medal for Eleni Leventelli in LW1X. She is only 17. The other two medalists were 22 and all three medalists were separated by less than one second. She's set to compete at the European Juniors next month so that could be another medal for her, and this time competing against people who are actually in her age category for a change. Too bad that our girls got 4th in W2-. Obviously if we sent Bourmpou/Kyridou they would've won gold probably, but Charalampidou/Papaterpou did well considering they are both 18 even though they were very far behind the three medalists. I hope they can get a medal next month at the European Juniors. Not sure what happened to our M4- out there. They won their heat and seemed to be going for a medal the first 1000m and then totally collapsed. At least they are young. Our boys in LM2X got 7th, both are also just 18 and were the youngest team in the crew. Hope they can win a medal at the European Juniors as well. Finally it was very disappointing to see our boys in M2- get 8th. I really expected better from them. Still, in most events we had the youngest crews and everyone else will be back next year except for Stergiakas. Congratulations to our medalists:

  13. Good result for Poland as Albania beat Hungary 1-0. Given how Albania controlled the play vs Poland the other day it's not a surprising result at all. Meanwhile Lewandowski scores after 5 mins vs San Marino. That's his 71st goal for NT which ties Miroslav Klose's mark for Germany. We sure ain't resting Lewandowski for the England game since he can score a few tonight

  15. Final Medal Table Comparing with 2016 (only nations in the top 30 in either edition), the NPCs which improved their performance in the rankings: 2016 2020 +/- NPC 64 11 +53 74 22 +52 48 10 +38 47 18 +29 41 19 +22 43 24 +19 29 20 +9 33 30 +3 7 5 +2 15 13 +2 4 3 +1 8 7 +1 NPCs which ranked the same as in 2016: 2016 2020 +/- NPC 1 1 - 2 2 - 9 9 - 16 16 - NPCs which ranked lower than in 2016: 2016 2020 +/- NPC 25 26 -1 12 14 -2 23 25 -2 27 29 -2 3 6 -3 5 8 -3 11 15 -4 28 31 -4 6 12 -6 25 31 -6 10 17 -7 21 28 -7 13 21 -8 19 27 -8 14 23 -9 22 34 -12 17 33 -16 18 35 -17 20 41 -21 24 51 -27 30 64 -34 Of course being higher or lower in the rankings don't always translate as a better or worse performance. Rankings can be deceiving, as Azerbaijan places 10th with only 19 medals (14 of those being gold) and France is only 14th with 54 medals (I'm sure they'll do fantastic in Paris). Compared to Rio, 8 NPCs continued in the top 10, with and out and and in. is the first host nation since in 2004 to not place in the top 10, but huge improvement compared to 2016 (no gold medals vs 13 golds now). and improved a lot, and even though they won less medals than in 2016 (18 vs 16 now), the great number of golds have placed in the top 20 for the first time since the 80s. Biggest disappointment should be with their worst ranking ever (aside from their first participation where they didn't win any medals). Tokyo definitely wasn't good for them as they also had their worst ranking at the Olympics since the 70s.

  16. at the 2020 Paralympics 72 medals (tied Rio 2016) 7th place (tied London 2012) 22 golds (best ever, previously was London 2012 with 21) at the 2020 Olympics 21 medals (best ever, previously was Rio 2016 with 19) 12th place (best ever, previously was Rio 2016 in 13th) 7 golds (tied Rio 2016) So Brazil tied or surpassed every best performance ever, so I'm happy with Tokyo 2020

  17. Rumors saying there exactly 4 (four) Chinese born players in the team, 17 north-american with Chinese heritage and 3 players without any connection to China other than their club team (Kunlun Red Star) which will be 99% of the team roster in Beijing. IIHF already changed its naturalization policy, precisely because of this case, now you do not have to play 2 years in the country to being eligible, which means Jeremy Smith is already assured to be the Goaltender of China at the Olympics. Here is the current Kunlun roster (you can imagine 95% of this team will play for China at the Olympics) https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/leagues/seasons/teams/0075992022.html

  19. Peter Genyn defended his Paralympic 100m title earlier this week, but that was quite something....shortly before the race, when he got to his racing wheelchair, there were three (!) flat tyres and a broken frame, which could only mean a rival (or someone related of course) actively went and sabotaged his wheelchair Good that whatever loser it was didn't win

  21. Yeah, I noticed this, but got annoyed that not a single news site or blog or whatever mentioned anything more than "China filed a protest and it was accepted" I did see later that China tried protesting several times during the competition, but the referees didn't accept it. They then went higher up, as is their right, and of course that process takes a bit longer (sadly). One can definitely assume the Brazilian did break some rule and the fault lies with him, but it is very bad - to say the least - that the video on which the decision was based isn't shown anywhere or at least to the Brazilians. On a more positive note, we were happy to cheer Thomaz to 400m silver My earlier comment about a winter medal was mistaken, he has apparently mostly given up the skiing, since athletics ends up giving him much more money (although every actual Olympian/Paralympian in Brazil gets quite a decent base salary, simply competing in any event will already give you 3000 reais per month for four years). I was confused with Cristian Ribera in the sit skiing, who is going for a medal in Beijing.

  29. Just a quick update on the search to find the TISC 2021 Open host. Canada has now also declined the hosting rights and Malta now has the chance to take up the hosting duties or to decline the invitation. The invitation was sent to the Maltese delegation on August 31st so if no response is received by Tuesday, 7th September we will open up the bidding process. Unfortunately time is not on our side to get the contest staged in the usual window so we need to act quickly if we can get the contest scheduled before the end of the year.
