  2. I don't think anyone mentioned it in the 2020-21 discussion thread. On 11 June it was announced, that Aljona Savchenko will return to competition this season, skating for USA. Her partner will be TJ Nyman. https://www.spiegel.de/sport/wintersport/eiskunstlaufen-aljona-savchenko-macht-doch-noch-weiter-in-den-usa-a-dbfe4831-c0f7-4948-ab60-534305e4a2fb

  3. Final Standing available here sounak Henry_Leon Monzanator It will be a very short presentation of the three medallists this time as my time is limited these days. A big congratulation to all three medallists of this prediction contest. @sounak with the gold medal, @Henry_Leon with the silver medal and @Monzanator with the bronze medal.

  4. What I'm excited about, and your list reflects this, is the fact that Canada is finally competitive in the two largest events of Swimming and Athletics as well as multiple team sports. This began last Olympics, and while I will watch all the events regardless of Canadian content, it is exciting to see our athletes in the mix in the biggest sports. For far too long Canada was a non-factor in swimming/athletics except maybe one or two chances here and there, and the team sports were a barren landscape. Gymnastics is also a big one where Canada has become more relevant. Medal or not, it'll be nice to see the Maple Leaf around these venues in Japan.

  5. Here are some medal chance predictions for Canada. OFC, nothing is guaranteed, but worth looking at. Archery: Just looking at seasonal performances by both Duenas and Barrett do not inspire confidence. However, the mixed team did make the final 8 of two events this season, so I think the mixed team has an outside shot at winning a medal. Athletics: Andre De Grasse in 200m, Marco Arop in 800, a medal in 5000 (either Ahmed/Knight), Warner in decathlon and Dunfee in walk should be medal chances that actually go onto medal. De Grasse in 100, Bishop in 800, Rogers in hammer and Lepage in Decathlon have an outside chance. 5 should medal, a further 4 chances that may or may not medal. Newman in pole vault, Crew in shot, women's 4x400 relay, men's 4x100 relay, Stafford in 1500, Ahmed in 10000, have outside chances as well. Basketball: Anything but a medal would be a major disappointment. Boxing: Veyre, Thibeault and Bujold are medal contenders, hoping for at least one medal between the three. Canoeing (sprint): C1 and C2 in women should win medals, maybe even 2 medals in C1. No other boats will likely win a medal. Cycling Road Apparently the course is very hilly, which plays into the strengths of Michael Woods. Cycling track One medal in women's team pursuit and a medal in women's sprint should be expected. Diving: I think 3 medals at a minimum here. Both women's synchro events and an individual medal for the women. The men have an outside shot in the 10m events. Golf: Brooke Henderson has an outside shot at a medal. Gymnastics: Hoping for at least 1 medal in artistic (through the women) + a medal in trampoline Judo: 5/6 judoka (minus Guica) have a chance to medal, 4 are ranked, so have a favourable draw. Hoping for 2 medals, which would be the most in one games in this sport for Canada Karate: Hard to gauge but Gaysinsky has beaten all of his opponents in the competition before except Gogita of Georgia, so if he arrives in the best possible form he could challenge for a medal. Rowing; Hard to gauge due to lack of competition caused by covid. I think the men could win a medal, while the women could get up to 4 medals. Rugby sevens: The women should medal or its a disappointment. Sailing: Hoping the best Sarah Douglas shows up, if she does, she has a chance to become the first Canadian female sailor to win an Olympic medal. All other boats have almost no chances Skateboarding: Berger and Papa both finished in the finals at the recent Worlds, with a strong performance they could have a chance to medal. Soccer: Hard to say, but the women should be in the convo for a medal. Sport climbing: Sean McColl should be in the conversation for a medal Softball: The women should medal or its a disappointment. Swimming: Hoping the men can pull out a medal, but I doubt it. The women: 200m freestyle, 100m butterfly, 100m and 200m back should provide medals. The 100m free is an outside chance. The three women's relays also provide chances along with the 200im and 400im. Taekwondo: Skylar Park is ranked third and hopefully she can win a medal. Tennis: So hard to predict, but the women's doubles team can do damage. Maybe a medal in mixed is also possible since the size of the field is small. Triathlon: Mislawchuk should be a favourite for a medal ,since he won the test event on the same course. However, hard to guess because so many factors can go wrong. Beach volleyball: Humana-Parades and Pavan have struggled lately, but hoping they can get it together Weightlifting: Charron + Santavy should medal. Wrestling: Wiebe and Lappage are former Olympic and World medalists, so on a good day they could potentially medal.

  6. It's rather clear this whole kneel down campaign doesn't work whatsoever. English fans are as much racist as the designated villains from Hungary or Poland

  7. Just read news that FINA is investigating swimming federation for fake results to favor the home swimmers. According to the source - Czech news. It says that meeting in November and April have been partially manipulated. According to FINA one swimmer provided some proofs including bribery offer and documents with the real results .... Well, well, well..... This is going to be interesting??

  8. https://fb.watch/v/1MdbIBXMH/ The winning goal of Copa America is almost a copy paste of winning goal against Nigeria in Beijing 2008 with the same players and same scoring technique for Di Maria, that video reminded me for the time football and sport were for everybody to watch, now even Olympics in Arab Region will be broadcasted exclusively on bein sport with no open channels to broadcast

  9. I’m not sure what you’re asking but I suspect you’re asking about the make of the British and Irish rugby and hockey teams? People from Northern Ireland are included in the hockey squads for both Ireland and GB There are no people from Northern Ireland in either rugby squad, but Max McFarland of GB is an Irish citizen and qualified for Scotland through his grandfather. Also, none of this matters.

  11. Yeah, false positives are going to happen when so many tests are being taken each day. It's like lottery and the winners' prize is a DNS at the Games if the false positive is right before the competition. They should take more one test from athletes who compete the next day and let them compete if only one of their test is positive.

  15. It’s a development competition. There’s always lots of stars missing As for ‘what’s the point?’ The point is competition. Why have regional events? Why have national events? Why have under 18 or under 20? Why have european? Why go to the Olympics if you’re not going to medal Duplantis has bigger goals than this but some athletes don’t. For others it’s a stepping stone. It doesn’t matter who’s not there. The athletes have their own goals and congrats if they achieve them

  17. I’m going to be fascinated by Track Cycling and Rowing with the lack of competitions I really don’t know what the outlook is. I’ve been listening to Adam Kreek’s rowing podcast and it’s really interesting to hear athletes give their perspective. Swimming is also interesting, this is the one sport that I am more optimistic (I’m a bit more cautious with Atheltics and the Team Sports than you are). I feel like a good meet for the Canadians would see the team surpassing the 6 medals from Rio but it could be somewhere around there. Medley relay looks stronger on paper but it really depends on Taylor Ruck’s performance in the 4x100m/4x200m. Although I think Oleksiak was holding back at trials in the 200m. Liendo’s probably the best medal chances for the men.

  20. Riner, Krpalek, the georgian and someone. Krasniqi, Bilodid and Funaki 99% sure in whatever order, then last medal between Munkhbat (big choker), Boukli (my bet) and Pareto (my hope).

  33. So sad for the English. Normally I don't like them (talking about football and has nothing to do with the country/people, I've been to London and it's probably my favourite city in the world), but I wanted them to win today. This meant so much to them but I just knew they would lose in penalties as they always do. Italy usually wins on penalties too (in recent years at least it seems that way).

  40. Hey all totallympians Just an update on when the Olympic contests will open. I have been quite occupied lately. I'm Germany at the moment to visit my girlfriend, so time for the forum is limited. I'm going to open the Swimming contest tomorrow. The entry list is finished as I think I got the favourites there. I have a few questions left to do for the Bet contest. Hopefully I can be done with that by Tuesday to open. The Miscellaneous contests should open Thursday at latest. Also the team event contest with picking the medallists has been scratched. I would encourage people to check out the fanzone for the olympics as there will be contest for team events there, bracket challenge. The finals standings for the EURO 2020 and Copa America 2021 prediction contests will be done by tomorrow. If I get time before the olympics I will do an updated version of the General Standings and Medal Tables. Wumo

  44. Would be glad, if you could send me a link to the study/survey you conducted on this matter. Thanks! Of course when you think like that, you never really have to deal with criticism, because you will always find a reason why someone else shouldn’t be allowed to criticize you. Obviously athletes from certain countries have it far easier to dope, but in the end when someone is world class, he is most likely doped, no matter the nationality. The US has dominated athletics and swimming for years, when you also take the systematic doping in other college sports and the number of American elite athletes who were caught in recent years into account, then the only logical consequence is that American sport is extremely dirty and probably not much different from Russian sport. You can’t dominate sports like athletics or swimming without doping, no matter whether you are the US, GB, Russia or China. You also can’t deny that western countries are investing more in anti-doping measures, which means that it is more difficult for western athletes to get away with doping, therefore the sentiment of SOME western people you mentioned is somewhat understandable, although of course those same people often ignore possible doping of their own athletes.
