  1. Extreme slalom is a relatively new discipline to canoe, but it’s thrilling head-to-head format has attracted new fans and strong television ratings since its introduction to the ICF world cups and world championship programmes. I almost peed myself laughing when I read it. linguists need to be informed quickly that the word strong has taken on a new meaning (yep impressive amount of more than 250 followers during the extreme slalom world cup race)

  4. The UIPM has recently announced the introduction of the New Olympic Pentathlon, which aims to shorten the time of the competition and make it more attractive to the audience. The approval of the format by the Executive Board caused a mostly negative reaction, from the athletes, whom the changes will affect the most. The following is an interview with Shiny Fang, UIPM Secretary General, in which she tries to explain the biggest doubts about the changes. The first question is, what is on the mind of the Pentathlon community – what is the reason for those changes? To aim for the future, to embrace the youth, and to widen the sport’s audience with a more compact and understandable sport product for media, also to demonstrate our most complete athletes in a shorter time without losing audience in between parts of the longer competition. Modern pentathlon’s place in the Olympic programme is a crucial thing for the sport, which is also a legacy of being founded by Baron Pierre de Coubertin himself. Was the proposal consulted with the IOC representatives as they should be the ones to know better, in which direction the changes should go? Certainly UIPM as the world governing body of the sport knows better how we can improve the sport and its product/format. However, if we are talking about Pentathlon in the Olympic Games, we first need to understand what is the IOC’s vision for future Games, and what would be the most valuable things to evaluate the sport’s impact in the Games. Therefore, it is a collective effort by all involved or responsible parties in the Games, including valuable advice from OBS, Olympic Channel and Paris 2024. Modern pentathlon has been changing for some time, but this is a true revolution. Doesn’t it bring confusion to new pentathlon fans to learn the sport from the beginning? Well, what we are changing or innovating is about our sports product, to smoothly shape it to a fan-friendly and media-friendly format so that audience can see a compact and complete sport within a shorter time. As you might know well, the sport has come from 5 days, to 1 day, to 5 hours, and now to 90min. However, what we haven’t changed is the core essence of the sport created by Coubertin – that is, the historical elements/disciplines are still the same since the sport was born. The proposed changes apply for only the Olympic Games (and the Olympic qualifiers, as far as I understand). Would it not be harder for fans to learn one format for the Olympics and another for all other competitions? We do have EB approved Olympic format and qualification events format, and those Olympic qualification events will be major UIPM competitions. Therefore, in terms of the format for UIPM major competitions, we will keep the same direction as the Olympic format, but with certain flexibility, such as number of athletes in final group, length of the breaks between each disciplines, etc. For UIPM competitions, we will have relatively more time to test and to fix more details, since the qualification events will only start from 2023. But for the Olympic format, we must be in line with the timeline of the IOC and Paris 2024, to give organisers enough time. By the way, it is quite normal that some other sports also have an Olympic format and a different IF format, so nothing unusual. The athletes are openly against it, and primarily because of the increased injury risks caused by a shortened warm-up time. Was the new format consulted with them? Actually the athletes are not against innovations, they are open-minded and intelligent, also sometimes they give us a lot of good ideas. For the new format, due to a series of processes which we also want to keep low profile with mainly athletes representatives in each working group and committees, it is normal that a lot of athletes who haven’t joined in athletes meetings at earlier stage, haven’t been well informed. Clearly, the communication with athletes is the key, and during the athletes call on November 11, a lot of their questions and doubts were addressed. But it is not enough, we will certainly engage more with them during the rest of the process. There were also very few test events with the new format – just the two in Budapest and Cairo, where the participation of athletes from all around the world was limited due to Covid-19 pandemic. Has the UIPM tried to conduct more test events, for example during the national competitions that were held in different countries, for example Russia, Belarus or Poland? Actually, we felt fortunate that we were able to manage two decent tests during this pandemic time with full support of our organizers, and yes, we will have more tests in 2021 before and/or after the Tokyo Olympics. More details will be fixed early in 2021. The changes were to be introduced this year, but because of the pandemic the Congress will be held in 2021. Were there ideas to postpone it to the 2024-2028 Olympic cycle, as the pre-Paris one is a shortened one after? No we won’t postpone, innovation has been a continuous process for decades in UIPM, Paris is a milestone that we cannot miss, and it will demonstrate more possibilities for LA 2028 as well. 8. Oh, you mean “the seasonal pastry to be presented to each IOC member upon entry into the country.” How the hell would we have Olympics without those measures!?! If the fridges weren’t “all filled with Coca Cola products,” the Olympic Games would immeasurably damaged forever! What insane, outlandish reform will you propose next! Letting people use cards other than Visa to pay for Olympic goods? “No. Sports, athletes, and spectators must be cut from the Olympic Games if they are too survive.” said the IOC member while trying his second golden watch (got to have one for each hand).

  9. 12 out of 500... 500*transport*food*beds etc. Would imagine there would be savings, but cutting athletes, which make a part of the games makes 0 sense too me. What should be cut are things like "baskets of seasonal fruit' for each IOC member... etc.

  12. on the men's side, Windisch, Bormolini and Cappellari were on the preliminary list, so I guess they have been left at home because they are just not in good shape (or maybe they -or someone close to them- tested positive for covid, so they have to miss this weekend...however, no news have been released about their absence)... on the women's side, there's a clear team policy trying to favour Lardschneider, Carrara and the upcoming youngsters...but the internal tests did force our TD to keep Sanfilippo and Gontier in the main team despite the original idea was to send them only in the IBU Cup team... in any case, the situation in our women's team promises to get quite explosive in the next weeks/months (and there's always the Wierer vs Vittozzi rivalry to manage, even if it looks that nowadays the hot days of the last season have been buried under the carpet...but you know, dust takes a second to come out again)...

  17. Major news out of the ICF this morning! They have passed a proposal to ask the IOC to include 2 extreme canoe slalom events at Paris 2024. However, the IOC has previously informed the ICF that they will not grant them anymore medals, so the proposal is actually eliminate 2 canoe sprint events and replace them with 2 extreme canoe slalom events The ICF also revealed that they will lose 12 quotas from Tokyo 2020 to Paris 2024. They also penned an interesting explanation/essay that subtly attacks the IOC’s policies under Bach. I’ve posted links to the announcement and explain action below. 19. they will have to use the help of the mens team. Our M team has one coach and two servicemens and they will have to care also for both girls. since obviously also altogether with the Fialková sisters service team (aka the Female SVK national team service team) also the W coach will have to stay in quarantine in Idre. They will pass another tests in Friday, Sunday and Monday, if all tests will be negative they will be allowed to travel to Kontiolahti for the 2nd week, if no our "B" team service team (for the Junior team) will travel to Kontiolahti and they will have to return home to Slovakia.

  20. Remove the Fialková sisters from the list. Due Covid-19 positive tests among their service team Paulína and Ivona are not allowed compete in the opening stage. I guess, this is what you get for organizing final preparation camp in famously known as the land of no covid measures ... They were there only for 1 week and 4 out of the 7 members of the team are covid positive.. The even more frustrating situation is that now the only 2 girls of our team in Kontiolahti will be the young Machyniaková and Horvátová and they will not have any servicemens, because all are stuck now in Sweden with the Fialková sisters... https://www.slovenskybiatlon.sk/spravodajstvo/svetovy-pohar/1366-minimalne-uvodny-vikend-v-kontiolahti-bude-bez-sestier-fialkovych

  21. Ignore that part. I copied last year's rules and I somehow forgot to delete that part. This is now the rules for selection of your team: Selecting your biathlon team Your biathlon team will consist of 5 female and 5 male biathletes. You are only allowed to select 2 biathletes from the same nation. Only 1 male and 1 female biathlete from the same nation are allowed. 2 male or 2 female biathletes are not allowed. For the first World Cup round, managers have 160 points to their disposal to buy their 10 biathletes for his/her team. For every World Cup Round, managers select one male captain and one female captain. I have now edited the opening post with the new rules. Sorry for the confusion!

  23. Right, today was the kick-off for the fourth and final stage of the Brazilian rollerski circuit. The third one consisted of three races, this one is made up of two races: today's 5/10k freestyle with individual start and tomorrow's 7.5/15k classic pursuit. The women's win went, not entirely surprising, to @brunamoura, who is still three months away from the one moment where she has to be in top shape, yet already broke another PB, this time on the most frequently held race: 12:02 minutes, sub-12 is coming next year. Second place for Mika Picin, half a minute behind the win and ten seconds ahead of Duda Ribera. https://www.fis-ski.com/DB/general/results.html?sectorcode=CC&raceid=36650 The men's win went to Lucão Lima, like he did in last week's classic sprint - he is showing some serious improvement and versatility. Too bad he won't go to the European snow season, unlike Olympian Victor Santos, who finished in third this time - half a minute behind. Second place went to @Jesús, who is very much on his way to Beijing 2022 and deservedly so. There are Chilean talents coming up, but they're still young and too far behind him for now. https://www.fis-ski.com/DB/general/results.html?sectorcode=CC&raceid=36649
