  1. Day 12 Wednesday Today I would watch: - athletics - M Hammer throw final with Paweł Fajdek as probably biggest chance for Gold for Poland in Tokyo, M 800 final hopefully with Adam Kszczot, W 400 hurdles final with Dalilah Muhammad and Sydney Mclaughlin both in form to beat WR, W 400 semis - who will be faster - Justyna Święty-Ersetic or Lisanne de Witte?, M 110 hurdles powerful semis - equestrian ind. jumping final - But it's coliding with athletics - what an awful scheduling here - cycling track men's sprint - some Polish-Dutch rivalry is possible here - Women's handball quarterfinals - with no Polish team, but I would cheer the Netherlands and France on - beach volleyball men's QFs - maybe a Polish pair will be here - Sky Brown in skateboarding - and last 2kms in open water W swim PS. And I hope there would be a medal for Lebanon - whatever event.

  3. I wonder how many people voluntarily go and watch that knowing his life is still in danger. The TV director showing replays (multiple, from all kinds of angles) within minutes, while there were and still are fears for his life, was just disgusting. That person needs to be fired, if you don't know how to do a job (and it is a rather universal thing in sports to not show these kind of replays until more is known about someone's condition), do something else.

  4. The rumours here in PL are somebody died in this accicent. A rider or a man standing behind the barriers. I hope these rumours are false.

  7. day #12, I guess... obviously, today it's only about one word, one sport, my "reason of life"...Artistic Swimming! I'm joking, of course... being a bit more serious (but only a bit), my main events of the day will be for sure Track Cycling (men's Team pursuit and women's Keirin), Open Water Swimming (women's race), today's Wrestling finals and Athletics (all of today's program)... then, the remaining finals (the last Sailing events and the Equestrian Individual Jumping above all) and a good team sports wrap up, especially my beloved Waterpolo, Field Hockey, Baseball and Handball (as they are all in the hot stages now)...

  8. It wasn't mistakes, it was his psyche. At least in Rio it was because he had in his head what he did in London. And now he'll have there what he did in both London and Rio. It'll be a huge pression and I'm not totally sure that he can manage that. WCh is a different thing, it's his home but Olympics? I think Wlodarczyk is bigger favourite for gold than Fajdek. It's ironic cause she has some rivals who can defeat her, especially that she's after ijnury. Fajdek can lose only with himself but it's a very dangerous opponent. Someone ones told me that Fajdek will never get an olympic medal. It was after Moscow or Beijing WCh, I don't remember. I do remember however that I laughed in his face back then. And after that came Rio and now I'm not so sure that he was wrong. But I hope he was.

  10. Indeed, today's the start of men's sprinting: will be interesting to see what Mateusz Rudyk can do. He is very talented and one of the biggest threats for Lavreysen. We'll see tomorrow in the finals! Nice that you cheer for The Netherlands. Every support helps! You cannot have a bad day in the quarterfinals. By the way: there are some rumours that the best Dutch player in history, Nycke Groot, will return to the national team (because of Estavana Polman's injury). That would be great. Today also reigning Olympic champion marathon swimming Sharon van Rouwendaal. I really like her. She always is so determined and committed. And beside that: she endures the freaks of het French coach Philipe Lucas. Now she has an shoulder injury (again), hopefully next year she can fight for a medal. Other highlights: men team pursuit, team jumping equestrian and hockey semis.

  11. The 75th anniversaries of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima would have taken place on August 6 and 9, the final day of the 2020 Olympics, if it had taken place this year. Here is a story I wrote about an American Olympian who has an extraordinary connection to Japan, whose grandparents survived the Hiroshima bombings, and whose father rescued them and brought them all to America. https://theolympians.co/2020/08/05/the-palchikoffs-how-the-grandparents-of-an-american-olympian-survived-the-russian-revolution-and-the-atomic-bombing-of-hiroshima/

@Sindo I believe the J 22 North American championships are canceled. Not 100% sure, but thought I would let you know so you can look into it.

  13. For context, the Oklahoma City bomber used 2 tons of ammonium nitrate to carry out his terrorist attack. The store of the same material that exploded in Beirut today was somewhere around 1,300 times larger.

  14. - Athletics - Men's Hammer and Men's 800m would be most interesting for me, also Women's 3000m Steeple and first day of Decathlon - Boxing - another final and some semifinals - Track Cycling - Men's Team Pursuit final and Men's Sprint which is the biggest and probably the only one chance for a medal for Poland - Equestrian - Jumping final - Open Water Swimming - Women's 10km - Sailing - 470 medal races - Wrestling - last day of Greco-Roman finals and some Women's and Freestyle competitions

  15. I have been reading the guidelines for all 2020 Olympic sports over the last few weeks trying to gain a better understanding of how athletes can qualifying for the Olympics. When I came to reading the qualification guidelines for the Athletics I became a little confused and was wondering if anybody would be able to answer my query. So I see that athletes can qualify by entry standard and their world rankings as well as athletes by universality place and athletes running only in the relays. I then looked at the road to Olympic Games 2020 - https://www.worldathletics.org/stats-zone/road-to/7132391?eventId=10229634 - and seen that 91 athletes meet the entry standard time for the Men's Marathon but the entry number is 80. Would all these athletes be able to compete or would some of them have to be cut? Also as it stands 31 athletes meet the entry standard time for the Men's 100m. Lets say 12 athletes obtain a universality spot, would it then be 13 athletes qualifying via the world rankings to reach the enter number of 56 or would it be 25 athletes with the universality spots added on top to take it over the 56 limit? Would that logic also apply to the other events in Athletics?

  17. Definitely the Gold Medal of Abhinav Bindra in 2008 Beijing in 10m Air Rifle. Where I distributed sweets to my colleagues after that. My students doing live commentary n all shouting n clapping inside the classroom. All inside the academy were startled to see the noise. That was beautiful moment.

  21. One hospital as been completely decommissioned by the blast, and ABC is reporting that people are driving to cities 50 miles away from Beirut in order to seek treatment, since hospitals in Beirut have reached capacity. I’ve seen media outlets reporting as many as 4000 (or more than that because numbers still aren’t fully known) people injured. It’s a complete catastrophe

  22. The Lebanese government is fucked. Apparently a store of (confiscated?, discarded?) ammonium nitrate is responsible for the explosion. It’s also being reported that this store of ammonium nitrate has been left unchecked for 6 years. 6 years!
