  2. Here tradition for Christmas mass is that they prepare a big table where at the end of the celebration they serve everyone hot chocolate with pandoro, panettone, Christmas biscuits, etc. Sadly I was forced many times to eat all that for free only to keep up appearances

  3. Great news!! Big countries have a long tradition of sending 20 athletes, and then only letting 13-15 compete. If there ever was a waste of quotas!

  4. But then again, these exotic athletes mostly have questionable (if any) connection with nations they represent. That would just cause more athletes to make citizenship changes in other sports too. Universality of participation in Winter sports is a sensitive subject. Because, you know, Winter sports are not very universal to begin with.

  5. I would really like to see the IOC have a pool of tripartite spots that can be awarded in any individual events at the Winter Olympics, since often times countries without much of a winter sports tradition have their strongest athletes in sports where it is very difficult to qualify.

  6. They need to keep it high so the cuts won’t be as painful when they add women’s events in 2026.

  7. So, so wrong. Honestly, Snowboarding should make a move to create it’s own federation at this point. The cuts weren’t horrible, but the FIS has made it clear who they value more. Why the fuck, weren’t Nordic Combined quotas cut?

  8. What a hockey match between Canada and USA Also with all the advertising on the ice/boards it makes the game look like it took place in Canada lol

  9. Thank you Wumo on finishing the massive work As you know, I will be semi-retired when it comes to prediction contests, might run 2-3 over the year but whenever I can, will help. Happy holidays!

  10. @Wumo I can already tell you my 2019 Golden Raspberry Award for the worst piece I've heard so far goes to Venezuela.

  11. Well, bobsleigh didn’t suffer terrible cuts (so thank the powers that be). Skeleton on the hand... That’s a shame to me. A lot of the “smaller” nations can afford to fund skeleton, and we’ve seen some untraditional nations athletes do well at the games. Losing 18% of athletes is one of most dramatic cuts we’ll see (at least in the short term). I am glad they preserved four-man, but on the other hand, I would have preferred 30 in both the skeleton fields and 25 in the four-man. Also, quite a big deal to see the regional clause cut. There’s almost no reason for non-traditional nations to even try and qualify under this system. Qualification just to got exponentially harder in most events.

  12. Well... If the edgy movement of NOlympics spread to every other countries, as long as East Asia is available, the Olympics will survive

  13. Water Polo for me. Handball contests have the advantage of being in december/january, when there is nothing else. If they were in another part of the year, we wouldn't be having so many of them..

    Chess Discussion Thread

of course I knew, and indeed it was on top of the headlines for couple of days, even though most headlines here belong to an Italian guy Stramaccioni in past couple of weeks Firouzja didn't talk to any media about this. so we don't know his exact reason but forcing to withdraw against Israeli opponents is probably one of the reasons. after Judo now we are in trouble in Chess, apparently until 2019 it was a rule you could use to avoid whoever you don't want to face in Swiss table. FIDE changed that rule and that's when the problem started ! last week two of our players (Iran's #2 and #3 Maghsoudloo and Tabatabaei) were in a tournament in Spain and they both faced and beat an Israeli opponent !! they both claimed they didn't know the guy and it was a blitz competition without a flag on the table next to the players. that caused some "problems" here, and therefore Iran decided to not participate in the World Rapid/Blitz Championship, (or at least not sending a male team, there will be female players from Iran) and that's when Firouzja revealed his old plan, he was living in France for few months and we had rumors he wants to eventually switch nationality, this accident probably forced him to do it sooner. so I can say this is probably not directly related to Israel but that was one of the reasons. this is different than Mollaei, this is his right to live wherever he wants and unfortunately he prefers somewhere else. Mollaei is a cheating liar. The truth is this is not really surprising, he is considered a great talent and the situation in Iran is really bad these days. mostly financially, these guys had to pay for their expenses (tickets, visa etc) another thing is 10 years ago it was considered VERY BAD , treason or something like that but when something happens again and again this is not "bad" anymore. and unfortunately I won't be surprised to hear news about this again in the future.

  18. Lausanne2020 is claiming that 79 NOCs have officially announced they will participate in the games. By my count, that is an overall increase of 9 NOCs from the last Winter YOG. I believe that every NOC that qualified to the games chose to participate, but I’ll have to wait until final entries are confirmed to check that. The following NOCs will be making their Winter YOG debut: . In the last 4 years, we’ve really seen Pan American and Asian participation in winter sports grow, and while the majority of that is thanks to immigration and heritage, there are some great grassroots programs working to identify young talents that could become winter olympians one day. On that ground, are worthy of commendation as many of their athletes are home grown, and have been giving the opportunity to travel and train for their respective sports. I think this YOG may show that there’s an even greater hunger for winter sports internationally, and I’m really looking forward to a great games at many venues that could classified as traditional homes to many of the sports on the program.

  19. I am relieved to find my memory hasn't left me https://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1023655/south-africa-s-gauteng-province-set-to-make-2024-olympic-bid-if-ioc-change-rules Although it didn't really get far and was still far from being an official bid.
