  1. I was bored so I tried to see if I can come up with a better system for predicting medals. Places like GraceNote essentially take the top three contenders and give them gold, silver and bronze. That tends to cause situations where a nation with a 50% chance to win say 12 events would be predicted to win 12 medals, but in reality they would only win six. Usually this is masked by the overall medal count, but it becomes apparent if you look at the details for individual sports. Currently my model is quite early in development, it doesn't take into account the maximum athletes per nation in a specific event or the chances of an athlete to fail (DNS/DSQ/DNF etc). It also only currently works for events where you can obtain a score/time/measurement (placing/head to head events will have to wait). Here's a sample of the men's 100m (top 5) that I was using as my test data. Men's 100m Gold - 76.4% - 17.8% - 1.9% - 1.5% - 0.9% Silver - 60.6% - 17.8% - 5.8% - 4.4% - 4.2% Bronze - 46.0% - 14.7% - 9.9% - 7.7% - 6.3% As mentioned above, the United States is currently a bit inflated due to more than three athletes contributing to its chances (removing them manually and redistributing it would give them 73.3%, 53.5% and 38.6% chances respectively).

  4. Once, as far as I know that was the first and still only time: at the 2014 Asian Games, the Japanese women beat the poor Maldives team 79-0. Japan had 82 attempts, so only missed three (which were in fact missed and not stopped by the Maldives goalkeeper, since 79 shots were shots on goal). Maldives surprisingly had 30 attempts, 22 of which were shots on goal, but all of them were blocked by the goalie.

  6. Well, I made it sound more dramatic than it actually is. Di Grazia was nevertheless appointed to the position in 2016 I believe, and considering that the test event was already held, surely a lot of thought was already put into building the course... Still, one hopes they don't move the event in a rash decision like they did with marathons... I don't believe IAAF would even consider moving their events if Doha hadn't hosted the World Championships.

  21. Yes on the first point. May not be always on the second one. For ex- If a team scores 250 runs & another team chases the score by losing only 1wicket but on the very last ball, it is also a close match.

  23. if you don't know how a cricket match is structured, it's actually quite difficult to understand... but let's try with the example of this match I've posted the score... basically, a cricket match is divided in 2 main phases (called "innings"), each one has a team playing on defence (the team "bowling", where there's one player -the "bowler"/the "pitcher" of baseball- throwing the ball to the batsmen and all the other players placed on the field trying to catch the balls hit by those batsmen), trying to avoid the other team, playing on offense, to score points ("runs")... in today's case, Italy started on defense and allowed Kenya to score 210 runs before eliminating all of their batsmen (an inning ends when all batsmen are out or when the number of scheduled balls have been completed), then, when Italy went on offense, they had to score at least 211 runs to win the match...and they did it before the end of the scheduled balls and before all of their batsmen were eliminated... so the score is written like this: Italy 211/6 because they scored 211 runs having only 6 eliminated batsmen (10 outs are required to end the inning) beat Kenia 210 (because they scored 210 runs with all of their batsmen out)... when the team playing offense first wins, instead, the final score reports the name of the winning team by X wickets, where X is 10 (the outs needed to complete an inning) minus the number of outs actually suffered by the winning team in their offensive inning... so, following today's example, if Italy had played their offensive inning first (and assuming they won with the same score), the score would have been just "Italy win by 4 wickets" because they would have had still 4 eliminations to take advantage of when their offensive inning ended and Kenia would have had all of their batsmen out before reaching the target score set by Italy... I know, it's not that easy at first sight...

  24. In this specific example, 211 / 6 simply means that during their innings the batting team scored 211 runs and lost 6 batsmen during the innings. So the number on the left refers to the number of runs scored (211) and the number on the right means the number of players dismissed (6).

    Cricket Discussion Thread

Italy won 211/6 to 210 against in the first match of the first round of the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge, the initial step of the qualification pathway towards the India 2023 World Cup... Italy started on defense and were able to contain Kenya's bats to a reasonable score, eliminating all of their batsmen in the last over of the 1st inning... then, debutant Nikolai Leonard Smith (Irish born, but with Italian mother, therefore eligible for our team) put on a show in the 2nd inning, becoming the first Italian player to score a 100 (102 not out, to be precise) in the first ever match under our Flag and leading the team to easily reach the target and win the match against all odds... this is also the first time ever that Italy defeat a team that in the past has played at least once the "true" world cup ( Kenya reached the semifinals in 2003)...

  29. There are two forms of team rankings - Normal and Olympic system. In both systems, top 3 players' ranks from each NOC are considered and matches between all the NOC are simulated. Normal rankings are used for World Championships and other team tournaments because the playing system is best of 5 single matches viz : A v X, B v Y, C v Z, A v Y, B v X. Virtual matches are simulated between all NOCs, the NOC which wins a virtual match gets 2 points and the other NOC gets zero. For example, if top 3 players of NOC1 is 52, 65, 89 and for NOC2 is 43, 78, 81 then by the playing system the results of virtual matches is given below 52 vs 43 NOC2 wins 65 vs 78 NOC1 wins 89 vs 81 NOC2 wins 52 vs 78 NOC1 wins 65 vs 43 NOC2 wins So NOC2 wins the virtual duel 3-2 and gets 2 points and NOC1 gets 0. Similar simulations occur between all NOCs and they are ranked based on the points garnered If one notices since China has the best 5 men's singles players, it should win all virtual matches and hence it garnered 296 points as number of NOCs is 149 Olympic rankings are used for Olympic Games only and the playing system is BC vs YZ, A vs X, C vs Z, A vs Y, B vs X ie there are 4 singles matches and one doubles match. On a sidenote, India's ranking has been consistently been around 11th-13th because its top 2 players, Sathiyan and Achanta have been in the 30-40 rank range but the third ranked player was always above 100. The ranking leaped to 8th now because Harmeet Desai improved his ranking from 104 to 84

  31. Final Standing available here Dolby africaboy Gianlu33 Very sorry for the delay! Wanderer has been very busy in the last weeks and I first had the time now to check all the predictions. With that said, here is the final standing of the 2019 ATP & WTA Finals prediction contest. With some great predictions by @Dolby, in especially the ATP Finals, the road to a gold medal was paved. Second medal in 2019 and the first of gold. Congrats, @Dolby! Another medal for @africaboy this year. Solid predictons in both ATP & WTA finals secured him a well-deserved silver medal. Second silver medal of the year and third medal for 2019. Congrats, @africaboy! It has been some time since @Gianlu33 last participated in a Totallympics Prediction Contest and what a way to come back to Totallympics Prediction Contests! He adds a bronze medal to his collection. An excellent performance by him throughout the contest. Welcome back @Gianlu33. Hope to see you in more prediction contests next year. Congratulation with the bronze medal in your comeback. When will @heywoodu win a medal? He was close this time with a 4th-place, but yet again he has to wait another contest in his effort to step on the podium in a Totallympics Prediction Contest. Thanks to all who participated! Women's Handball World Championship is well underway and will conclude this year's prediction contests. We will soon know who will grab the last medals of 2019. Stay tuned! A couple of general news. Firstly, the general standing of the 2019 Totallympics Prediction Contest season will be done between Christmas and New Year. Secondly, Totallympics Prediction Contest will likely see some changes in 2020. You will soon here more about these. The Prediction Group would advise all users to keep an eye on the Prediction Discussion thread here in december. P.s. @Wanderer. If you see this, please check your PM-inbox as soon as possible.
