As silly as breakdancing is at least it’s a physically challenging and unique exercise. It’s not what anyone wanted, but it’s not e-sports. It’s not an affront to sport as a whole. I mean artistic events were even held in the Olympics before, and it’s not that unlike, say, gymnastics. And it’s not a permanent event either. Having rotating ‘innovative’ events while maintaining the 25+ core disciplines (let’s not forget, these new sports are a tiny FRACTION) is a good balance to have, I think. I would have preferred e-sports, where results are based on, well, results, instead of on being 'cool'. I think since forever youth has been 'against' the established stuff like rules and burocracy, but here we are, enjoying it Totally agree. If anything, Olympics are now more accessible than ever, so you'd expect to have more true Olympic fans in the future... #banbestmen

The real 'kids' probably just want to see stuff they do themselves and I never see anybody breakdancing here. Also, skateboards were cool 15 or 20 years ago Now it's video games or, heavens forbid, watching videos of people playing video games. Can we all stop giving IOC new ideas about new events, please. szy123 79 Posted February 21, 2019 #278 Share Posted February 21, 2019 I have mixed feelings. I mean, breakdance was one of the worst options they could choose, but at the other hand you can't say that bboys/bgirls are not athletes. To be a good breakdancer takes years of training. I'd prefer squash for example, but I am able to understand IOC's decision. Also talking about new audiences, encouraging youth to Olympics, I think that adding "urban" sports could work. A lot of my friends are quite hyped about freestyle BMX, skateboard, sport climbing. But I don't like the idea of changing few sports every Olympics. It's just not fair for the athletes. Maybe it's not a problem with baseball/softball, which doesn't need Olympics imho, but it is a problem in karate now. Some younger karatekas may dreamt about competing in Paris and then... France doesn't want it (to my surprise, they're good at karate). However, afaik WKF and probably also WBSC would try to become core sports. I'm not sure, but it was probably Polish Karate Union who wrote, that decision about karate as a core sport would be made next year. ahjfcshfghb 1 I am unashamed, at getting nothing done. JoshMartini007 2,204 Posted February 21, 2019 #279 Share Posted February 21, 2019 I think it was for the best for karate given what was done to it in 2020. At best, individual kata could have remained and expanded so that more than 10 athletes would compete.
