dcro 10,172 Posted March 18, 2016 #81 Share Posted March 18, 2016 This is just too painful for Togo. Wouldn't be surprised if he was robbed in at least in one of those fight. One thing that REALLY annoys me are those "weakish" coutries that earn a bunch of quotas at continental qualifications. That's especially often the case at the American and African qualifications with the likes of Venezuela, Tunisia, Morocco etc etc. They qualify a bunch of athletes in wrestling or boxing for example and most of those athletes do nothing at the Olympics (if not all of them). It's a good thing that rowing for example no longer allows to qualify more than 1 boat per gender at continental regattas. Something similar should be done in boxing. For example, it would be good to have a rule that if a country already has 4 or more boxers qualified, then they can't earn a quota in box-off (unless the other nation in box-off also has 4 or more boxers). Everyone would still be able to qualify a lot of boxers, but they would have to "earn" it. #banbestmen

Maybe, but at least 5 Moroccan boxers will go out in round one. Edited March 19, 2016 by dcro #banbestmen

Morocco steals the show in women's boxing. Some countries really got hurt by the fact that there are only 3 quotas per category for Africa (in 2008 and 2012 Africa had 6 quotas per category for example). Ghana has one last chance to qualify in welterweight later today. In 2008 Ghana had 6 boxers, in 2012 4 boxers, so this is very bad for them. Now they have to defeat Algeria just to get this 1 quota. Same will be in wrestling with Egypt,Tunisia,Nigeria and Algeria. And for canoeing sprint as well.

It should still be possible to qualify in all categories, off course. But there should be some quota limits at continental qualifications. If you want to have a lot of athletes you have to earn it on global stage. Well, at least in canoeing C1 and C2 quotas should be interesting. Sao Tome and Principe should qualify based on their performance at World Championships last year, fingers crossed. Maybe even in C2. #banbestmen

I fully agree with the first point. Weightlifting and Taekwondo have got their qualification spot on in terms of quality, quantity and diversity because they have limits. If other sports (Boxing, Shooting, Wrestling) were to follow this model then there could be more competition within continents for quota and a more diverse range of countries will qualify - growing the sports in smaller nations. JoshMartini007 2,131 Posted March 19, 2016 #90 Share Posted March 19, 2016 I disagree, why should an athlete be not only the best at their event for their nation, but be better than someone in a different event? It opens up corruption (how can you measure whether someone is better in the light flyweight vs. the bantamweight?), weakens the overall field and could shrink the interest of the sport in some nations. konig
