:SLO WEEKLY UPDATE :SLO

(December 11th - December 17th 2017)

  • Basketball player Goran Dragič and Alpine skier Ilka Štuhec became Sportsperson of the year at an annual ceremony, which took place in Cankarjev dom, Ljubljana. Goran Dragič is only fifth athlete from team sports to achieve this prize in 50 years.
  • Dragič was one of key factors on the way to gold for Slovenia at Eurobasket 2017 and alson MVP of the championship. Second was road cyclist Primož Roglič, first ever Slovenian to win a stage on Tour de France, also second in time trial at WCH and third another outstanding basketball player Luka Dončič.
  • Among women there was no doubt. Ilka Štuhec succeded Tina Maze as Downhill World Champion, she was also second in Overall World Cup Standings. Second best athlete is our outstanding sport climber Janja Garnbret and third judoka Tina Trstenjak for finishing second at WCH.
  • Best team of the season without any doubt was National Basketball Team, first team ever to win gold at major team events, Handball Team took second for bronze medal in WCH.
  • Žan Kranjec finished 3rd at legendary GS in Alta Badia. This is his first podium, also first men GS podium for Slovenia after 16 years (Uroš Pavlovčič; 3rd Kranjska Gora 2001).
  • Slovenia Women Handball Team took 14th place on their first WCH after 2005. Slovenia lost against Sweden in Round of 16 by margin of 12 goals (21:33).
  • National Volleyball Team will not compete in newly established Nations League, even though they earned in on court. Instead they will compete in European League - Golden Group.
  • Tennis player Aljaž Bedene will be once again competing for Slovenia. Bedene lives in London for 9 years and was playing for United Kingdom last three seasons. ITF did not gave him permission to play for another country in Davis cup, therefore he was not able to compete at the Rio Olympics. His next goal is to qualify for 2020 Tokio Olympics.
  • Jakov Fak took 8th and twice 13th place at biathlon races in France. Fak remains 3rd in Overall World Cup Standings.
  • Swimmers failed to win a medal at European SC Champs in Copenhagen, first time after 1996. Best result is sixth place (Stevens - 50 breast M / Oder - 800 free W).
