The UCI Para Cycling Track World Championships in Los Angeles finished yesterday and the USA topped the medals table winning 10 golds and 20 medals, closely followed by GB with 8 golds and 16 medals. A total of 13 nations won a medal at the Championships which kicked off the road to Tokyo 2020 for many athletes.

The United States sent a strong team that included reigning Paralympic champions Shawn Morelli and Jamie Whitmore, along with 2016 Paralympic medallists Samantha Bosco and Joseph Berenyi, along with rising stars Jennifer Schuble and Christopher Murphy.

Close on the United State's heels was the British team, who dominated the Tandem B events for visually impaired athletes, who won 5 of the 6 golds and 12 of the 15 medals available in visually impaired cycling events. The dominance was led by 2016 Paralympic Champion Sophie Thornhill who won every race she was entered in and on the men's side James Ball raised his game to win 2 gold medals and deliver times that would have put him on the podium in 2016. Another successful athlete was Jonathan Gildea who narrowly missed out on Paralympic selection but came back fighting by winning 2 gold medals, again with times that would have won him Paralympic medals in Rio.

Other strong performances came from double Paralympic medallist Lauro Cesar Chaman from Brazil who won 3 individual medals and two Canadian riders, Tristen Chernove and Ross Wilson who both won silver medals in Rio.

Oceania Para Table Tennis Championships begin tomorrow (follow results here)

Athletes from :AUS:FIJ:GUM:KIR:NCL:NZL:PNG:SOL:TGA:TUV:VAN will compete, a record for the region. There is a big IPC intiative in the region that basically is getting most disabled people into table tennis, for the 2019 championships they want to get lots of competitors so no classes have to be combined, thus qualifying more oceanian athletes from more countries to the Paralympics.

Bear in mind that Guam, Kiribati and Tuvalu have never competed at a Paralympic games, so hopefully they will all make their debuts in Tokyo

Australia on top at Oceania Para Table Tennis Championships 2017

Australia won 8 out of 9 gold medals at the Championships in Suva, Fiji

The dominance of Australian para Table Tennis players in the Oceania region was reinforced over the past few days, with Australian athletes winning half of all the medals. Stars for the Australian team included Paralympians Melissa Tapper and Barak Mizrachi, along with new faces Junjian Chen and Nathan Pelissier.

But the championships was not all about Australia, Fiji was the only other nation to win gold thanks to Merewalesi Roden in the Women's Wheelchair class. The host nation had a successful championships winning 7 medals and beating New Zealand into second place in the medals table. Along with New Zealand, 3 other countries won medals at the Championships, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu and Papua New Guinea (all competing in their first ever Oceania championships).

The standard of competition at the championships was a huge step forwards from the last 2 editions, which saw athletes from nine nations compete (those mentioned above plus New Caledonia, Tonga and Vanuatu). Building from these championships more nations and atheltes are expected to compete in 2019 at the Pacific Games and Oceania Championships and it seems likely that more Oceanian nations will compete in Table Tennis at the 2020 Paralympics.
