Olympian1010 7,418 Posted June 2, 2019 #21 Share Posted June 2, 2019 Well our flag bearer is elected democratically by thier follow athletes on the team. But I would love to see someone unknown like Casey Eickfield, or anyone not a super popular athlete. Let’s put someone else in the spotlight for once. “Sport has the power to change the world. phelps 6,536 Posted June 2, 2019 #22 Share Posted June 2, 2019 Anybody who's had great past success, but he/she's not a medal candidate anymore and doesn't have any sort of "political intent" connected to his/her nomination... De_Gambassi 896 Posted June 2, 2019 #23 Share Posted June 2, 2019 I'll be utterly surprised if Lavillenie is not the chosen one this time. Seems very obvious, and recently we have gone with the obvious choice. So... And I'm fine with that.

NMQ 221 Posted June 2, 2019 #25 Share Posted June 2, 2019 hace 7 horas, LDOG dijo: Like - Paula Pareto (Judo) Probable - Santiago Lange (Sailing) Don't see anyone else with a chance of being flag bearer. Normally only people who already have won olympic medal or world championship and are close to retirement are chosen. Only Del Potro, if he plays, but tennis starts the next day, so no. heywoodu 13,504 Posted June 3, 2019 #26 Share Posted June 3, 2019 Epke Zonderland (gymnastics), icon of Dutch sports (at least nationally) and a more than excellent character outside of the arena. Jur 486 Posted June 3, 2019 #28 Share Posted June 3, 2019 In non-written rule is that tne flagbearer is someone tha has a previous gold medal. Taking that, it's between 3 people: Saul Craviotto (Canoeing): Olympic champion, multiple medallist and pretty popular and well known face (He's a big star since he won Celebrity Masterchef, nation's biggest tv show nowadays). He was already the flagbearer at the 2012 closing ceremony. Mireia Belmonte (Swimming): Olympic champion, multiple medallist, well known face, 2018 Mediterranean Games flagbearer . Only thing against her is usually swimmers are not alowed in the opening ceremony since they compite next day... Lidia Valentín (Weighlifting): Olympic champion, multiple medallist, known face (not so much compared to the other two), In her favor is the "social justice" of her having three medals but only one podium in her oympic carreer due to dopers, so she deserves an olympic big moment. heywoodu 13,504 Posted June 3, 2019 #29 Share Posted June 3, 2019 Belmonte is an Olympic champion? I'll be damned I hope Valentin gets it exactly for the reason you mentioned. Monzanator 3,569 Posted June 3, 2019 #30 Share Posted June 3, 2019 Of course she is an Olympic Champion I still remember Martin Lopez Zubero too but don't remember if Spain has ever won more golds in swimming. In Poland there is a well-publicized curse of the flagbearer, since Waldemar Baszanowski won two golds in 1964 & 1968 (he was a FB also in 1972!) the athletes carrying the flag has won only one medal (Waldemar Legien gold in 1992).
