Wumo 2,795 Posted January 10, 2019 #11 Share Posted January 10, 2019 An organised crime group involved in manipulating professional tennis competitions was dismantled in an operation led by the Spanish Civil Guard and coordinated by the National High Court of Spain (Audiencia Nacional), supported by Europol. In total 83 suspects were arrested, 28 of them are professional players. One of them took part in the last US Open. https://www.europol.europa.eu/newsroom/news/fraud-tennis-court-criminal-network-gained-millions-fixing-professional-matches
Olympian1010 7,470 Posted January 11, 2019 #12 Share Posted January 11, 2019 Andy Murray has announced his retirement from the sport (after Wimbledon this year). He cited his reoccurring back pain as the reason. “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair” - Nelson Mandela
Monzanator 3,593 Posted January 11, 2019 #13 Share Posted January 11, 2019 Not surprising, his defensive style was brutal to his body which eventually broke down. If he's still in pain despite the surgery, it's all over. Makes you admire how long Nadal is going given his knees issues. Olympian1010

And then they say that sport is healthy... Nobody in their right mind says elite sports are healthy. Practising sports (on an amateur, recreational base) is healthy, practising professional/elite sports is not. I happened to have a little talk about this with my girlfriend last week, and she described it pretty well: as a full-time athlete, you're always feeling pain here, feeling pain there, feeling like you're about to get sick, etc, also when you're in your best shape.
