Annemiek van Vleuten in the individual time trial (women). Japan baseball (men). Netherlands hockey (women). I don't think that any of those can be named "big time favourite" in their respective competitions... sure, they start from the pole position, but imho they all have some very strong contenders, who can't be considered a big surprise if they win... Dunadan 1,103 Posted July 28, 2018 #12 Share Posted July 28, 2018 The biggest favourites for me are in team sports or team events in which one team is dominant (Russian team in artistic swimming, USA in women's basketball,...). An individual athlete (even Ledecky) is more likely to have injuries, doping problems, personal problems,... rafalgorka and Giovanni Gianni Cattaneo
phelps 6,844 Posted July 28, 2018 #13 Share Posted July 28, 2018 I'd rather put the Sinkevich brothers in Rowing in the "they just can't be beaten" category...

Quasit 849 Posted July 28, 2018 #16 Share Posted July 28, 2018 If we're talking about Russia and Artistic Swimming, we shouldn't forget about Rhythmic Gymnastics as well. What about Teddy Riner and Kaori Icho? Riner will still only be 31 by then and still nobody has defeated him. Icho could go for her 5th gold. She hasn't been wrestling after Rio I think but she hasn't officially retired either. It would be amazing for her to go for another gold. Stopped watching sports, there are better things in life. intoronto 4,226 Posted July 28, 2018 #17 Share Posted July 28, 2018 Canada has 0 biggest gold medal faves The closest would probably be Kylie Masse in the women's 100m backstroke.

Well, we had the single biggest favorite across every events in 2018 (Mikaël Kingsbury) which, to me, was a foreign and nerve wrecking experience. As for 2020, I think Ledecky in the 800 and 1500 has to be the biggest favorite in any individual events.
