  1. Argentina is proving again to be the best team in the series. Head and shoulders above the rest.

Fiji is still not finding the mojo, they will be strong in Paris no doubt but I feel they will struggle to make the threepeat.

For France Dupont will definitely be a X-factor. He already managed to play 14 minutes in the 6th game while being very impacteful both on defensive and offensive ends.

  2. 🚨 400m WR ALERT🚨

Christopher Morales Williams :CAN just broke the indoor 400m WR during the SEC Championships in Fayetteville with a 44.49.

Previous best was Michael Norman's 44.52.

Don't want to throw shade on him but he's an absolutely random guy, at least for breaking a WR :p No credential to his name. Still young though, only turning 20 in August. Previous best from last year : 45.48 as a u20. 45.39 indoors this year.

I'm not as pessimistic as that - in my opinion France have a decent shot at getting the last quota but it does need everything to work in their favour.

First, they need Mexico to win the continental champs ahead of Canada. That would give Canada an additional 607.5 points, giving them an adjusted lead over France of 168.75.

Then, at both of the remaining Nations Cups, France would likely need to finish at least 2 places higher than Canada.

Quite unlikely looking at the entries for Hong Kong. All of the main contenders will be there, bar Canada. France will have a hard time bettering the 5th place from Adelaide. Everything will then be decided in Milton, where I guess a lot of teams won't appear so good luck making up for those points.

Sorry but it’s clear it was fixed. Once again if this happened in Germany what exactly do you think will happen in Paris then?

And dubious calls were made too against France in its home Rugby World Cup a few months ago. What exactly do you think will happen in Paris then you dumbass ?

Fantastic 6:07 for :FRA Loubinaud in the B division

Great fight in the A division as well, with Roest eventually taking the win against Ghiotto, and Bloemen in 3rd after an insanely fast start.

Incredible time. Even more so when you think his fall in the EC mass-start could have been much much worse ... same applies for countryman Mathieu Belloir for that matter.

Agonizingly close to a WCh spot in the TP but I feel it's just a matter of time.

  6. First Challenger last week in Dubaï :

    :CHN :KEN

    :ARG :UGA

    :BEL :POL

    :THA :CZE

    :PNG :HKG

    :PAR :MEX

Difficult tournament for the European teams. Poland seem to struggle a little bit lately. Czech Republic managed to win against Kenya in pool stage but tumbled after that. Belgium, who won't be in Monaco, didn't look dominant and wasted a shot at the SF against Uganda, who overachieved a bit here I'd say.

Kenya didn't make it easy for China but the latter looked the better team overall, though their path to Paris is not written. Argentina is indeed climbing up, I highly fancy their chances in a few months time.

  7. First Challenger last week in Dubaï. Less interesting than the women's competition regarding the Olympic qualification tournament, as the huge favorites will be South Africa or GB, but some notes worth keeping.

Apart from Mexico there is not much difference between all the teams, despite Kenya taking it in the end. Chile seems to have stepped up a bit, Germany still strong but still unable to wrap things up, as is HK.

Yeah, I noticed that yesterday.  There is no YT live stream for the two solo skeleton events today but there is for the team event.  Very odd.

Actually there is one. It just doesn't seem to be displayed anywhere. I tried several locations, geoblocking every time.

    1) What exactly is the point of your comment? You can't expect me to lead a discussion in good faith with you after you come in putting words in my mouth in order to frame me. With this childish behavior you shouldn't bother to answer me in the future.

That is quite clear. Riethmüller was a very promising junior, then took a lot of time to find his way. Don't try to tell me you would have deemed him as "very promising" two years ago. Looking at his junior career your analysis would have been "why is this guy so far from the promises he once shown". That's exactly the point with Grotian. Things are not linear.

On 1/10/2024 at 8:07 PM, OlympicsFan said:

    2) Your argument about Grotian obviously doesn't make sense. Grotian at 19 is now slower than she was last year with 18, this isn't "developing at different speeds" it is "regressing", which absoutely shouldn't be seen as normal for someone of her age.

And how exactly do you manage to actually assess this "regression" ?

She's not dominating the WC charts but still register top-20 ski times regularly, nothing last year ensured us she would match with the fastest girls as of yet. Again, we could expect it but not consider it done.

In fact, if we compare apples and apples (IBU Cup Ridnaun Sprints) between 2023/23 and 23/24, we can see that she was 21st on the track last year, 11th this year, with a fall. Take it as you wish.

  10. 1 hour ago, OlympicsFan said:

Absolutely shocked by Grotian's development. Not sure what happened during the summer, but her off-season must have been horrible. She can't even dominate at IBU cup level.

Or each progression has its own rhythm. In the very next post you're displaying Riethmüller as "very promising". You'd have called him a complete bust, a waste of talent, a product of German auto-destruction factory a year or so ago when he seemed to have lost his way

    Obihiro :

    Loubineaud : 12ème (mass-start A), 16ème (5000 B)

    Belloir (Mathieu) : 12ème (mass-start B), 14ème (1500 B)

    Thiébault : 22ème (1000 B)

    Poursuite par équipe : 10ème (4ème B)

    Pékin :

    Loubineaud : 6ème (mass-start A), 18ème (5000 B)

    Belloir : 17ème (1500 B), DNF (mass-start B)

    Stavanger :

    Loubineaud : 7ème (mass-start A), 18ème (10000 B)

    Belloir : 2ème (mass-start B), 12ème (1500 B)

  13. I didn't think it through but the 24 (12x2) teams tournament makes it impossible having all the matches on one pitch in two days. So we may see more two pitches divide, in Cape Town this week, and then in Los Angeles.

Despite most of the tournaments being held on three days they still got rid of the "plate" semis. Five matches is now the norm if you don't reach the semis. A bit unfair as a best 3rd can finish in the top 4, in 7th or 8th, but not in 5th or 6th ...

Other change : the draw. Men's tournaments were drawn, but 12-teams women's were not and pools decided with a serpentine system. That's not the case anymore. This must also change the QF table, as with the old system (used in Dubaï) the order was (1A/2nd best 3rd - 2B/2C - 1B/best 3rd - 1C/2A). Now it should be best 1st/2nd best 3rd, 2nd best 1st/best 3rd ...

The Lithuanian did get sick,i would guess guigonnat might of been pulled becuase she might not have been ready for a pursuit at this level[but of course that's me guessing]  sickness is going around the estonian and canadian camps so that  might explain those two, have no clue for  everyone else.

Never gonna happen. If you're fit enough to top 10 in a WC sprint then you're fit enough to start the pursuit. Unless you're a really recent XC convert with a more than random shooting, but that's not Guigonnat's case obviously.

I would not be thrilled with that, no :p

I mean, in terms of atmosphere, there is absolutely not going to be any better place in the world for speed skating - from national championships to Olympics - than Thialf. Hamar once rivalled it, but not anymore. That being said: I'd be sad to have Olympics in one country, and one sport pretty far away in another country.

Last week a Dutch former speed skater (Olympic champion Mark Tuitert) was talking about it during the World Cup broadcast, and he said he'd have been sad to have that in his career: according to him, a majority of athletes of course wants to go to the Olympics, but with part of that being immersed in the entire Olympic feeling, from a nation's culture to so many athletes from different sports being in the same area, which normally just doesn't happen. Olympics in France or Switzerland or so, with speed skating in Thialf, would mean the speed skating is basically just another championship instead of something special like the Olympics.

Fair enough, was expecting this kind of answer from you :teacher:

First French championships in a lifetime are around the corner ... in Inzell of course. Can it change anything ?
