Started out so well for them.  Trout homered in the 1st, seemed like the Angels might have something.  Then they have nothing from there.  Will likely be the story for them all season

That's been the story of the Angels ever since Trout entered the league :d (besides 2014). At least he had Ohtani to keep him company for a few years.

58.92m for her 5th result over 58m! Likely will need to consistently be among the 58-60m range in order to qualify. Wonder why her most recent results aren’t showing up on the Road To Paris site though, maybe they just haven’t updated it yet? :mumble:

The latest world rankings are from March 19. We should hopefully get a ranking update today.

  4. Japanese Olympic Trials: Day 8

Final day of competition say 4 more qualification times and 3 new individual qualifiers.

    Men's 100m Butterfly:

    1. Katsuhiro Matsumoto - 50.96 Q

    2. Naoki Mizunuma - 51.23 Q

    3. Genki Terakado - 51.33

    4. Takeshi Kawamoto - 51.59

Matsumoto goes under 51 seconds to qualify for his 2nd individual event. 2022 World Championship silver medallist Mizunuma also manages to qualify. Also getting under the JASF QT was Genki Terakado. With the 100m butterfly results, we also know that Japan will send their men's 4x100m medley relay to the games.

    Women's 200m IM:

    1. Yui Ohashi - 2:09.17 Q

    2. Shiho Matsumoto - 2:09.90 Q

    3. Mio Narita - 2:10.39

Just like Seto yesterday, Yui Ohashi qualifies for the Olympics at the last opportunity and will have a small chance to defend her 200 IM Olympic title. 2:09.17 is her fastest time since the Tokyo Olympics. Shiho Matsumoto also had the swim of her life after missing qualifying in the 100m butterfly by 0.01 seconds. Mio Narita was also under the JASF QT and just missed qualifying for her 2nd individual event.

    Women's 800m Freestyle:

    1. Waka Kobori - 8:26.62

As with many others at these trials, Waka Kobori was under the AQUA OQT but missed the JASF QT. Though she'll likely get a spot as a relay swimmer so maybe she'll be allowed to swim this event.

Nobody was close to qualifying in either the women's 50m freestyle or men's 1500m freestyle.

And now we wait for the official team announcement. It should look something similar to below. Some relay-only swimmers may be removed/replaced, discretionary picks may be selected and qualified swimmers may add other events to their lineup.

Probable Japanese Olympic Team (27 athletes)

    *relay-only swimmers are not confirmed

    Men (14):

    Yu Hanaguruma - 200m Breaststroke

    Tomoru Honda - 200m Butterfly

Hidenari Mano - 4x200m Freestyle Relay

Katsuhiro Matsumoto - 200m Freestyle, 100m Butterfly, 4x200m Freestyle Relay

    Tomoyuki Matsushita - 400m IM

Riku Matsuyama - 4x100m Medley Relay

    Naoki Mizunuma - 100m Butterfly

Tatsuya Murasa - 4x200m Freestyle Relay

    Daiya Seto - 200m IM

    Hidekazu Takahara - 200m Backstroke

Taku Taniguchi - 4x100m Medley Relay

    Genki Terakado - 200m Butterfly

    Ippei Watanabe - 200m Breaststroke

Konosuke Yanagimoto - 4x200m Freestyle Relay

    Women (13):

    Reona Aoki - 100m Breaststroke

Mizuki Hirai - 100m Butterfly, 4x100m Medley Relay

Nagisa Ikemoto - 4x200m Freestyle Relay

Waka Kobori - 4x200m Freestyle Relay

Hiroko Makino - 200m Butterfly, 4x200m Freestyle Relay

    Shiho Matsumoto - 200m IM

    Airi Mitsui - 200m Butterfly

    Mio Narita - 400m IM

    Yui Ohashi - 200m IM

Rio Shirai - 4x200m Freestyle Relay, 4x100m Medley Relay

Satomi Suzuki - 100m Breaststroke, 200m Breaststroke, 4x100m Medley Relay

    Ageha Tanigawa - 400m IM

  5. Japanese Olympic Trials: Day 7

    One more qualifier from today.

Daiya Seto (1:56.87) was able to avoid disaster and finally qualify himself onto the Japanese team in the 200 IM and now the door is open for him to swim in the 400 IM too. So Ogata (1:57.52) was under the AQUA OQT BUT MISSED THE JASF QT BY 0.01 SECONDS!!! :hairpull:

No qualifiers in both the men's 50m freestyle and women's 200m backstroke.

One more day of competition tomorrow and then we'll hopefully get a team announcement soon after.

Updated probable Japanese Olympic Team (22 athletes)

    Men (11):

Satomi Suzuki - 100m Breaststroke, 200m Breaststroke, 4x100m Medley Relay

    Ageha Tanigawa - 400m IM

  6. Japanese Olympic Trials: Day 6

4 new qualifcation times and 2 new qualifiers today.

    Women's 200m Butterfly:

    1. Airi Mitsui - 2:06.54 Q

    2. Hiroko Makino - 2:07.61 Q

    3. Chiho Mizuguchi - 2:08.23

Mitsui now ranks 5th in the world this season. Makino adds an individual event to her lineup after finishing in the 200m freestyle earlier.

    Men's 200m Backstroke:

    1. Hidekazu Takahara - 1:56.28 Q

    2. Keita Sunama - 1:57.01

Big swim by Takahara to rank 8th in the world this season. Heartbreak for Sunama who missed the qualification time by 0.09 seconds. 34 year old Ryosuke finishes in 3rd and that very well may be the last we see of him.

    Women's 200m Breaststroke:

    1. Satomi Suzuki - 2:23.09 Q

    2. Kanako Watanabe - 2:23.55

    3. Runa Imai - 2:23.69

The legend of Satomi Suzuki grows as she has now qualified in a 2nd individual event. Heartbreaking for both Watanabe and Imai who both put in good swims but were short of the JASF standard.

Updated probable Japanese Olympic Team (21 athletes)

    *relay-only swimmers are not confirmed

    Men (10):

    Yu Hanaguruma - 200m Breaststroke

    Tomoru Honda - 200m Butterfly

Hidenari Mano - 4x200m Freestyle Relay

Katsuhiro Matsumoto - 200m Freestyle, 4x200m Freestyle Relay

    Tomoyuki Matsushita - 400m IM

Tatsuya Murasa - 4x200m Freestyle Relay

    Hidekazu Takahara - 200m Backstroke

    Genki Terakado - 200m Butterfly

    Ippei Watanabe - 200m Breaststroke

Konosuke Yanagimoto - 4x200m Freestyle Relay

    Women (11):

    Reona Aoki - 100m Breaststroke

Mizuki Hirai - 100m Butterfly, 4x100m Medley Relay

Rikako Ikee - 100m Butterfly, 4x100m Medley Relay

Nagisa Ikemoto - 4x200m Freestyle Relay

Waka Kobori - 4x200m Freestyle Relay

Hiroko Makino - 200m Butterfly, 4x200m Freestyle Relay

    Airi Mitsui - 200m Butterfly

    Mio Narita - 400m IM

Rio Shirai - 4x200m Freestyle Relay, 4x100m Medley Relay

Satomi Suzuki - 100m Breaststroke, 200m Breaststroke, 4x100m Medley Relay

    Ageha Tanigawa - 400m IM

  7. Japanese Olympic Trials: Day 5

A much more eventful day with 4 new qualifiers.

    Women's 100m Freestyle:

The women's 100m freestyle saw Rikako Ikee take the victory with a time of 54.15. Well off the QT of 53.12 needed to qualify but with that swim, Japan has officially qualified a women's medley relay with the 4 stroke 100 swimmers combining for a time under the JASF required time. So Ikee will probably swim the freestyle leg.

    Men's 200m Butterfly:

    1. Genki Terakado - 1:54.07 Q

    2. Tomoru Honda - 1:54.18 Q

    3. Daiya Seto - 1:55.40

    4. Takumi Terada - 1:55.45

    5. Riku Tanbo - 1:55.67

A massive PB by Terakado to stun 2024 World Champion Honda. He also had by far the most emotional celebration of any swimmer after the race. While Honda didn't win, he also gets under the required time and he avoids disaster again after the 400 IM. Seto has one more chance in the 200 IM to qualify. Despite winning his semifinal, Terada finishes in 4th. Terakado and Honda now rank #1 and #2 in the world so far this year.

    Men's 200m Breaststroke:

    1. Ippei Watanabe - 2:06.94 Q

    2. Yu Hanaguruma - 2:07.07 Q

    3. Yamato Fukasawa - 2:07.75

    4. Ikuru Hiroshima - 2:09.39

One of the most anticipated races of not just Japanese trials but the entire trials season lived up to the hype. Ippei Watanabe went sub 2:07 to take the #1 time in the world this year and qualify for the Olympics again after missing Tokyo. Hanaguruma also threw down a massive PB to qualify and rank #3 in the world. Heartbreak for Yamato Fukasawa who threw down a time of 2:07.07 earlier this year. That would have tied Hanaguruma.

    Women's 1500m Freestyle:

    1. Airi Ebina - 16:07.00

A huge PB by Ebina to take the win here. Her time is under the OQT and would get her to the games in most other countries but isn't under the JASF standard .

    Men's 100m Freestyle:

    1. Katsuhiro Matsumoto - 48.28

Another win for Matsumoto. Ultimately fell short of the 47.97 required time and the top 4 combined times fell short of the necessary relay time. However, Matsumoto is already qualified in the 200m freestyle so he still might be able to swim this event in Paris.

Updated probable Japanese Olympic Team (19 athletes)

    *relay-only swimmers are not confirmed

    Men (9):

    Yu Hanaguruma - 200m Breaststroke

    Tomoru Honda - 200m Butterfly

Hidenari Mano - 4x200m Freestyle Relay

Katsuhiro Matsumoto - 200m Freestyle, 4x200m Freestyle Relay

    Tomoyuki Matsushita - 400m IM

Tatsuya Murasa - 4x200m Freestyle Relay

    Genki Terakado - 200m Butterfly

    Ippei Watanabe - 200m Breaststroke

Konosuke Yanagimoto - 4x200m Freestyle Relay

    Women (10):

    Reona Aoki - 100m Breaststroke

Mizuki Hirai - 100m Butterfly, 4x100m Medley Relay

Rikako Ikee - 100m Butterfly, 4x100m Medley Relay

Nagisa Ikemoto - 4x200m Freestyle Relay

Waka Kobori - 4x200m Freestyle Relay

Hiroko Makino - 4x200m Freestyle Relay

    Mio Narita - 400m IM

Rio Shirai - 4x200m Freestyle Relay, 4x100m Medley Relay

Satomi Suzuki - 100m Breaststroke, 4x100m Medley Relay

    Ageha Tanigawa - 400m IM

  8. Japanese Olympic Trials: Day 4 Recap

An expected quiet day with only two finals.

Rio Shirai won the women's 100m backstroke in 1:00.27, well outside of both the AQUA and JASF qualifying times. However, she'll be in a good position to add a 2nd relay to her event lineup assuming Japan is able to qualify a women's medley relay.

Nobody was even close to qualifying in the men's 800m freestyle. The qualifying time was faster than the national record .

  9. Japanese Olympic Trials: Day 3 Recap

5 more swimmers punched their ticket to Paris with a few others likely getting relay spots.

    Women's 400m IM:

    1. Mio Narita - 4:35.40 Q

    2. Ageha Tanigawa - 4:35.60 Q

    3. Waka Kobori - 4:36.55

This was the one race that the JASF didn't set a harder time the than AQUA OQT. As a result 3 swimmers went under the mandated time with Narita and Tanigawa earning spots for Paris. Defending Olympic Champion, Yui Ohashi finished 4th (under the qualifying time) and won't defend her title.

    Men's 200m Freestyle:

    1. Katsuhiro Matsumoto - 1:45.29 Q

    2. Konosuke Yanagimoto - 1:46.84

    3. Tatsuya Murasa - 1:47.57

    4. Hidenari Mano - 1:47.86

The top 4 swimmers did enough to secure a relay spot for Japan and will most likely be nominated for the Olympic team. Matsumoto will swim the event individually after doing enough to meet the JASF QT. Hidenari Mano had been under the AQUA OQT during the qualification period but was only 4th today.

    Men's 100m Backstroke:

    1. Riku Matsuyama - 53.72

For the first time in over 10 years, 34 year old Ryosuke Irie lost a domestic final in the 100m backstroke and is in jeopardy of not qualifying for Paris. Instead it was Matsuyama who produced a big PB to take first place and a potential medley relay spot.

    Women's 100m Breaststroke:

    1. Satomi Suzuki - 1:05.91 Q

    2. Reona Aoki - 1:05.93 Q

At 33 years old, London 2012 bronze medalist Satomi Suzuki produced a new PB to win the race and qualify for Paris. Reoan Aoki also produced a good time to qualify.

    Women's 200m Freestyle:

    1. Waka Kobori - 1:58.22

    2. Rio Shirai - 1:58.27

    3. Hiroko Makino - 1:58.42

    4. Nagisa Ikemoto - 1:58.51

Like the in the men's event, the top 4 women did enough to secure Japan's spot in the 4x200m freestyle relay. They'll likely be nominated for selection.

Updated probable Japanese Olympic Team (15 athletes)

    Men (5):

Hidenari Mano - 4x200m Freestyle Relay

Katsuhiro Matsumoto - 200m Freestyle, 4x200m Freestyle Relay

    Tomoyuki Matsushita - 400m IM

Tatsuya Murasa - 4x200m Freestyle Relay

Konosuke Yanagimoto - 4x200m Freestyle Relay

    Women (10):

    Reona Aoki - 100m Breaststroke

    Mizuki Hirai - 100m Butterfly

    Rikako Ikee - 100m Butterfly

Nagisa Ikemoto - 4x200m Freestyle Relay

Waka Kobori - 4x200m Freestyle Relay

Hiroko Makino - 4x200m Freestyle Relay

    Mio Narita - 400m IM

Rio Shirai - 4x200m Freestyle Relay

    Satomi Suzuki - 100m Breaststroke

    Ageha Tanigawa - 400m IM

  10. Japanese Olympic Trials: Day 2 Recap

3 swimmers punched their ticket to Paris today.

    Men's 400m IM:

    1. Tomoyuki Matsushita - 4:10.04 Q

    2. Daiya Seto - 4:10.84

    3. Kaito Tabuchi - 4:11.15

Big PB by Matsushita to become the first Japanese athlete to qualify for Paris. Other than that, a complete disaster for Japan. Tomoru Honda already shockingly failed to qualify for the final. Then Daiya Seto, arguably the biggest Japanese star, fails to qualify in his signature event despite getting under the OQT. Also getting under the OQT was Kaito Tabuchi. So a country that's known for their producing world class IMers will only nominate one athlete for this event. If this doesn't make the JASF change their selection criteria, I don't know what will.

    Women's 100m Butterfly:

    1. Mizuki Hirai - 56.91 Q

    2. Rikako Ikee - 57.30 Q

    3. Shiho Matsumoto - 57.31

    4. Ai Soma - 57.64

4 women under the OQT and 3 women under the JASF QT. Another big PB by the 17 year old Hirai and Ikee barely qualifies in 2nd. Great race all around.

    Men's 100m Breaststroke:

    1. Taku Taniguchi - 59.43

    2. Yu Hanaguruma - 59.47

    2. Ippei Watanabe - 59.47

Once again, 3 men under the OQT but all failed to meet the JASF QT of 59.26 (see a pattern here?). Taniguchi should be nominated for the medley relay should the stroke 100 winners meet the required relay time but won't swim it individually.

    Current Japanese Olympic team

    Men:

    Tomoyuki Matsushita - 400m IM

    Women:

    Mizuki Hirai - 100m Butterfly

    Rikako Ikee - 100m Butterfly
