  1. Well NZ has had famines in the last few olympics in cycling considering the amount of talent they have. But must say we haven't come across so much talent particularly in women's endurance before. But I still lack confidence in them because just like rowing you can't gauge anything on past performance unless you were Hamish Bond and Eric Murray who practically forced out rival athletes from other nations to seek other boats. Because the gold was literally there's already.
  2. Pretty fair reflection on NZs past championship results. But I guess what gracenote can't forsee is in rowing in particular NZ will be welcoming back 10 olympic medalists from the US College system back into the scene, and have substantially already bolstered quite a number of crews. Im expecting at least 4 medals from the womens canoe sprint squad. Emma Fairweather would be lucky to medal at the Olympics, same with Dylan Schmidt. Not convinced about men's team winning 7s gold. Cycling for NZ is too hit and miss who knows what they'll do.
  3. Will probably end up with around 165-170 odd athletes. Our smallest since Athens. No womens hockey, a reduced rowing squad with no eights. Will probably reject a few quotas and they'll get allocated elsewhere as we are the gift that keeps on giving. Just looking at who qualified and what I think we will reject quota in, it will probably be Archery (2), Artistic Swimming (maybe?) (2), Taekwondo (2) and 1-2 Shooting quotas that will get allocated
  4. I doubt the NZ Mens 7s team will be winning gold or even medalling. But I can however see Lisa Carrington contributing to 3 gold medals however.
  5. Also Hawaii (according to Native Hawaiians an illegal US state) would be the powerhouse of surfing.
  6. 1. There's no money in boxing and 2. Those that partake in combat sports and with NZ's relative success in the UFC and MMA they'd rather be Israel Adesanya instead (not the greatest role model to follow however).
  7. Coming from NZ where cricket is only popular among the private schools and upper class snobs, I don't feel it warrants a place in the Olympics. For the mere fact that cricket has a lot of corruption particularly match fixing. There's actually nothing wrong with the nuances of the game if you can sit for a 5 day test but I feel as a purest who actually enjoys test cricket and not really a fan of T20, cricket in the Olympics just wouldn't sit well.
  8. I'm actually very surprised only 1 NZ crew is out of olympic contention. This is perhaps the weakest and least experienced rowing team we've sent to the world championships.
  9. No medals for NZ either. A 4th, 5th, 6th and a 7th plus 2 top 10s. A complete flop by the pole vaulters. Seriously lacking some top 2 inches. Mentally weak.
  10. Let's hope we see a Carrington and Fisher rivalry in the WK1 500m next year. All of NZ want to see it.
  11. Quite frankly Oceania really is only 2 countries. Also, the Olympics is a worldwide event not the European Benefit Games. The Olympics has been dominated no matter what sport or event it is by the Northern Hemisphere and that is primarily not down to purely athletic talent but geography. Example, accessibility. 90% of all World Championships seem to be in the NH particularly Europe. The sports that are in the Olympics one could argue are mainly European but that's purely down to economics and politics.
  12. Not sure the Dutch were going to win gold regardless of the fall but what drama.
  13. I really hope England bring that same approach v. Spain. Now what to do with Lauren James? Do they start her? I would think they would. Just another physical presence that the Spanish may well struggle to contain...
  14. England the better team to be honest. Deservedly into the final.
  15. This game is shades of Eden Park last night. England back in front.
  16. Sam Kerr just brought the house down. What a goal.
  17. I think it's more the matter of no real match racing at the Olympics. Sailing is here to stay but some of the classes I believe shouldn't be there. Particularly the mixed class multihull and the kite surfing. I'd rather those two classes and 3 events be replaced with a Sail GP mixed event. Sail GP has revolutionized the sport in a way . So much so you can hold the event in and around a Harbour, instead of going right out to sea and is much more spectator friendly. The TV coverage is quite out of this world too. But would rather have boats of that class match race. That's sailing at almost its purest.
  18. Let's be honest sailing is the America's Cup. I mean most of the time Olympic sailing is a borefest. Quite uninspiring and more often than not, not very spectacular. The kitefoil is a farce and how the heck was that event added in?
  19. Oh well better get acquainted with these protests got a feeling Paris will have loads of them...
  20. Spain getting a nice big piece of humble pie and the crowd are loving it 😆 🤣 😂
  21. We should just stick to rugby 😩
  22. I'm surprised Fairweather got a medal out of this I was expecting it from the 800 not the 400.
  23. NZL We have drastically less chances with mass retirements than before and I don't really hold much hope with matching the dizzying heights of 2021. So here goes... Lisa Carrington K1 500m - is the big favourite. Now this is an interesting one because if fellow NZer Aimee Fisher decides to get over her issues with Canoe Racing NZ which it sounds like they're coming into an agreement NZ could go 1-2 in this event and Aimee has beaten Lisa at Nationals, and is the only one that has come close on multiple occasions since this olympic cycle. Lisa Carrington Alicia Hoskin/Aimee Fisher K2 500m - Lisa and Alicia have improved dramatically since last year but are very much beatable. Rumours are that both Lisa and Aimee could very well pair up and have tried this week before heading off to Europe and their timings already are mind-boggling... But we want to see it to believe it. NZ Womens 7s team - They're that good that they could field an A or B team and still win 99% of the time but there's always that off chance that an upset is around the corner. But anything less than a gold is a tragedy. NZ Mens 7s team - There's considerably more depth on the men's side internationally but with a young team who have already won the World 7s series they have the potential to take out Fiji. Number 5 could be one of so many from multiple rowing teams and individuals, track cycling teams, Hayden Wilde - triathlon, multiple sailing individuals and crews that none of them are clear favorites in their event. But can also not win a medal. It's probably going to be the first olympics where we have no outright rowing or sailing crews as gold medal favs in 20 years. So who really knows.
  24. Funny you say that. I was thinking that this could further jeopardize future Commonwealth Games. Even if it does stop could this be the last time we see the home nations competing separately? With costs of hosting multi sport games its becoming not a very viable option. I mean there was talk about us in NZ hosting a future games but with Victoria pulling out I doubt very much this will happen.
  25. Let's make no bones about it Australia will be pushing hard for this to be included if not already for Brisbane 2032. Just a pity the final will be played at the Gabba and not at the iconic MCG (one of the great sporting arenas in world sport) in Melbourne.
