  1. Seek inspiration in the First Punic War when your ancestors overcame the greatest naval power of the age! 😊
  2. I seem to remember Italian strength always being in two and four person boats. It seems crazy to sacrifice this for the Eight where the fields are smaller but also very tough. If you're goung through a period with a limited talent pool surely you identify targets among the smaller boats.
  3. I think it was you who told me a few years ago that the people running Italian rowing survive by claiming medals in non-Olympic events. Is that still the case Phelps?
  4. The same is true of baseball/ softball which is even slower and has much less action.
  5. Those 4th place finishes are going to prove important if the weather is similar for the B finals.
  6. Pity, it would have been a bit boring from a spectating point of view but lots of close races.
  7. Yep, although September is another really busy month in terms of qualification. Things get a litle bit more sedate after that for a few months.
  8. Just GB I think. You only earned a quota if you finished on the podium and the other two already had quotas. The two unallocated quotas will be added to those being drawn from the rankings. If I'm wrong I'm sure Rafa will correct me!
  9. So you could be in a pickle if you draw Branston? 😊 Sorry. 🙄
  10. In the 2022/23 Pro League last December GB (as opposed to England) beat the Netherlands 3-0 and drew the return match 1-1. I agree that the Netherlands are the favourites but most of the England team have recent experience of beating this Dutch team. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022–23_Men's_FIH_Pro_League
  11. I agree the men's tournament is going to be much harder to call than the women's next year judging by the FIH Pro League last winter with a real mixture of results and no really dominant teams. Should make for a fascinating OG event. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022–23_Men's_FIH_Pro_League Interestingly the finalists here finshed top of the league during the winter so it appears to have benefited them coming into this tournament.
  12. Seems very risky if they did this when they only finished two pts clear of the 10th placed athlete.
  13. Lol. Nine competitors covered by three points. 🤔
  14. Surprisingly Clouvel failed to qualify for the final.
  15. GB has revived its long tradition in both the men's and women's 800 & 1500 m in the past 5-10 years and Scottish runners have played a big part in this. It's a big turnaround as British teams 10-20 years ago often only had one Scottish athlete - Liz McConnell. They were almost invariably outnumbered by Welsh athletes. I'm sure there's way more to it but the improvement seems to have coincided with Glasgow hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
  16. To be more specific it stays at the same athletics club in Edinburgh.
  17. It would have been the final embarrassment for Ingebrigtsen if his father had successfully coached Nordas to beat him.
  18. GB are best of the rest and a bit of a wild card. They only compete as GB in the fourth year of each Olympic cycle so we'll get a better idea over the next twelve months. I still doubt that they'll medal this time but if they qualify and reach the semis who knows.
  19. The top three together with and seem to be the main contenders for medals next year judging by the results in last winter's international hockey league. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022–23_Women's_FIH_Pro_League
  20. Yesterday we saw the 36 year old European men's 400 m record go. I think we're also going to see the even older 44 year old men's 200 m record go this week.
  21. I knew it was large enough but I was more concerned about the suitability of the summer weather conditions.
  22. That's a bit unfair when we gave the world Boris Johnson.
