  3. and now it's official! the IJF has officially registered Kim Polling's switch from to now she can represent with immediate effect Polling's words on the social media (in Italian...google might be helpful): "Ciao a tutti, mi chiamo Kim Polling e posso dirvi che da oggi posso rappresentare l’Italia.

  4. Is someone genuinely asking why Eastern bloc countries fell off in terms of sporting results after the arrival of democracy? East Germany only competed in 5 Olympics in rowing, but they won 48 medals, including 33 gold. They were only overtaken by the US in 2016 in the all time medal list (and they’re still ahead of the rest) In Athletics, there’s still several European records that exist since the 80s with East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria and the USSR all involved. This isn’t a slight on the fine people from Eastern Europe on here and the current athletes doing their best. But the answer to why they were so strong in the 1980s is doping. No one disputes this.

  7. Gracenote are predicting 5 medals for team BG, which more or less is what should be expected. Though the configuration is to be seen. They are predicting 1 silver and 4 bronzes: - Silver for the Group in Rhythmic Gymnastics; - Bronze for Stilyana Nikolova in Rhythmic Gymnastics individual; - Bronze for Svetlana Staneva in Boxing W57 kg; - Bronze for Bozhidar Andreev in Weightlifting M73 kg; - Bronze for Semen Novikov in Wrestling GR87 kg. Interestingly, Gracenote are not seeing any medal for Karlos Nasar in weightlifting 89kg

  15. The country is growing in every aspect, bar the sporting one. And this has nothing to do with the EU, as the change started happening already in 1990. It just took 15 years for everything that was built in the prior decades to fully crumble. All results in the 90s and up to Athens was the last pipeline, that was structured in the old system. The truth is, like JoshMartini mentioned, that sport funding, country wide structuring and people's mentality completely changed in one day after the old regime fell. The next day and upcoming years no one was thinking about sports as an important issue. On the contrary, it became the bottom of the barrel. Which is true to this day still. Every time there is a new Government, in the 20 or so Departments, that are structured, the Sports one is always not taken seriously and the sports Minister is looked like a joke amongst the rest. There were even years, when there was no Sports Ministry and sports were added as a backburner in the Education or Youth Ministry. Regardless of the money aspect, i have talked in length before on the old system and how it will never be duplicated. In those days, for every kid, from every town and village, it was mandatory to do sport already from 1 grade. Lots of sports, after school sports, not your typical 2 hours a week killing time, like in the present. Then there were agents, or a special committee, that had a job to go to every town, to every school and scout the best children and navigate them to which sport will be best suited for their abilities, so that they can start specifically training in their pre-teenage days. After that they were taken first from the local coaches, again every big town had training camps for a dozen sports, it wasn't just the one camp, where you could go train for gymnastics etc. Then there were selections between the different regions and only after that you were elevated to National team status and get the full system structure. Nothing like this is being done today. Kids are not only not encouraged to do sports, everything in the system actively tries to discourage them. Any top level athlete we have is purely based on the individual person's desire and a small team around them. I can also add the notion, that kids in the 70-90s were waking up and going to bed with only the thought of playing sports. It doesn't have to be on an organized level, just your regular play with friends. You couldn't find a street, where the neighboring children weren't playing. Even in my teen years, in the mid to late 00s, you had to wait your turn for a football field in my school, even though there are 5. Each of them were always taken, from schoolers to people on their 50s playing matches. You make a goal post on the street and play, it was a luxury to get a normal (concrete) pitch. You walk in the school today and you would be lucky to see 10 children play after school. Everything is phones, tik tok, instagram, video games, cafes etc. Who wants to sweat doing dumb sports. Multiply that for the grind and dedication required for how many years before you become an elite athlete, garnered with non-existing funding, crumbling facilities, not enough knowledgeable coaches and staff in general and you get and optimistic prognosis of 5 medals. And yet, it would still be better, than a huge part of the World. People may laugh, but if we had even 40% of the system and desires from the 80s, we could be fighting for a top 20 in the medal table at least.. (Or you could still say it was only magical potions and mushrooms..)

  22. And now, for Emerging Nations Programe. 29. I do not know what will they do for belarus, but russian olympic committee is officially suspended. So, formally they cannot accept quotas at all)) We have similar situation in wrestling where quotas were won by ineligible athletes. So the IOC will have to deal with this in some way. According to the recent communications the process is: 1) IF sends list of qualified athletes to the IOC 2) the IOC decides whether they are allowed of not

  34. OK, let's take a look at freestyle draws 57kg: the bracket is somehow balanced but the bottom half looks tougher to me no clear favorite in the top half. I think 4 wrestlers have a chance to qualify. Zou (CHN) will face the Kyrgyz wrestler in the QF. and in other QF I expect to see MGL vs IRN. this is clearly our weakest weight and Mohammadnejad has a not-so-easy Russian (representing TJK) in the first round as well. I think any of these 4 wrestlers can qualify. we have 3 clear favorite in the bottom half, Aman (IND) the North Korean and Abdullaev. Aman has to beat Kazakhstan in the first round which is never easy. I always rank Aman very high but PRK in lightweight is something else and this guy won the silver in Hangzhou Asian Games. so I'm trying to not be biased so let's say 65kg: while we have some challengers from KAZ, CHN and the russian mercenary of Bahrain, I think the first round match between Kudiev and Kiyooka will determine the top half quota. Kudiev is a very good Russian (recently bought by TJK) but Kiyooka beat the Olympic Champion Otoguro to make the Japanese team. I'm very very surprised that MGL is not entering the Asian Games Champion Tulga. their new guy is not actually new and he was never impressive. I wonder how come he is #1 and Tulga is #2 !! he will face the host favorite Akmataliev. I think the winner of this match will qualify at the end but we also have Sujeet (IND) , I'm not familiar with him but he beat Bajrang back home. he has a big challenge in the first round against Jalalov (UZB) and last but not least is North Korea. Kim KJ won the bronze at the Asian Games and only lost to Tulga. in summary any of these 5 guys can qualify. this is a very tough weight in Asia. while I know I'm most probably wrong but I say 74kg: there are 5 or 6 quality wrestlers in the top half but I think one between Abdurakhmanov, Toktkomambetov or Asluev will qualify. Abdurakhmanov has a tough first round against the Russian-Tajik Evloev. if he wins I don't the QF will be challenging for him. I still pick the Olympic bronze medalist but I know he is getting old and is beatable now there are two clear favorite, Kaipanov has a clean path to the SF and our Emami also most probably can win his QF with relative ease. Emami and Kaipanov are old rivals. they had couple of controversial matches before. Emami sometimes chokes when you don't expect him to but still I think 86kg: 3 Asian wrestlers are already qualified which makes this a bit easier. but still the draw is quite unbalanced and we have 3 favorite in the top half. Sharipov, Deepak and Ishiguro. I would pick Sharipov but he wrestled few days ago at the Asian Champs (although at 92kg) but still he will be a bit tired so I go with the winner of IND/JPN match, I think Deepak can prevail with his experience but it will be close. in bottom half I don't think the Kyrgyz wrestler can do much so it will be between CHN and MGL. my prediction 97kg: almost all of the favorite are in the bottom half and I think the top half will be between KAZ and CHN (slim chance for Korea) I give it to Yergali but I know the Chinese is well capable of beating him. our Azarpira is the favorite for the quota but he has to face the worst possible opponent in the QF. Arash Yoshida if JPN has an Iranian father. he has the same style as our wrestlers mixing it with few Japanese tricks making him very dangerous. but still he is very young and this is his first serious 97kg competition. we also have Olympic bronze medalist grandpa Ibragimov and the Mongolian. any of these 4 wrestlers can qualify (sorry but I give no chance to India) still I think the top 2 seeds will make it 125kg: two big names in the first half, Deng (CHN) and Monkhtor (MGL) the last time they faced Deng beat the Mongolian narrowly but I think it will be different this time. I see 4 guys capable of winning the quota in bottom half. Sharipov (the new Russian mercenary) looked good at the Asian Champs. he will be the favorite if he is not tired of back to back competitions. the giant Kazakh Batirmurzaev will be his biggest challenge, also Lazarev (KGZ) can be dangerous, he sometimes wins matches when you don't expect. also the former drug cheat Rakhimov is in the mix. I say

  35. Here are the previews for Women's Wrestling 50kg: As simple as it gets are in opposite halves and should qualify easily. Vinesh is returning to the category after a long time. She's a former World Medallist. North Korean is Asiad silver medalist. 53kg: are favourites and are in opposite halves. 57kg: A dreadful draw in top half. Olympic medalist in 53kg, Jong who beat Sakurai at AG but was cruelly denied and Hong are in top half. The 2nd Chinese Feng tasted defeat to Sakurai for the first time in 5 years last week. In bottom half it's easy going for former World silver medalistAnshu except for small hurdle in form of World U20 medallist Kyzy. I will say 62kg : has an easy draw in top half. in bottom half but should get it. 68: Olympic medalist Zhumanzharova is favourite Nisha should follow but is strong too 76: is favourite. for next 2 quotas, I'll pick the former. 4 1 I can't believe I put 1 for it could go maybe say upto 3 or so due to close fight in many and getting 4 would be a record, maybe we end at 3 also.
