According to the qualification document if there are less than two swimmers qualified in an event at trials Swimming Canada will nominate the next best ranked swimmer that has the A standard, and will nominate the best swimmer with the B standard and a FINA invitation in events where Canada doesn't have anyone qualified, as long as they pass a "review for competitive readiness", which is defined as them being reasonably able to match their qualifying time at the Olympics.

The document very specifically says will, not may. From my reading of the document the only real discretion is if a swimmer is injured or otherwise no longer in good enough form to hit the standard.

Which means Kisil would go, beating out Hayden by 0.04!

Interesting. I was under the inpression that they likely wouldn’t be taking some of the B standard athletes. I think with the priority listing in the qualification document they may not but didn’t notice the wording.

There is absolute discretion in so far as what constitutes fitness, but by the wording of both the nomination document and the definition of fitness anyone who hits an A standard or a B standard at trials and who is invited by FINA should be selected.

:ITA Gregorio Paltrinieri got mononucleosis...

most likely, he's going to miss the Olympics, but even if he pulls out a miracle and recovers in time, he will be chanceless in terms of medals...

we're ruined...

I'm curious how he got mononucleosis in the first place.

50 year old :BUR Siphiwe Baleka, who competed at the 1992 US Olympic trials under his birth name Tony Blake, will compete at the Olympics. First swimmer from Burkina Faso.

So much for CBC hyping Brent as the oldest swimmer

1) He could still recover in time.

2) You have more than enough other medal chances:

Miressi (100 free)

Detti (400/800 free)

De Tullio (400 free)

Acerenza (1500 free, if Paltrinieri doesn’t compete)

Martinenghi (100 breast)

Burdisso (200 fly)

Maybe men’s 400 free relay

Maybe Razzetti (400 IM)

Quadarella (800/1500 free)

Pilato/Carraro (100 breast)

Panziera (200 back)

Sjöstrom 57.34

I think MacNeil and McIntosh will improve on their times today. O‘Croinin in the 400 might also join the top 8 today and later on 1 or 2 Canadian women could also make the 400 IM Top 8.

Only change in those events after the Canadian trials:

Pickrem moves into 8th spot in women’s 400 IM with 4:37.03

I will post the top 8 for all events (relays included) at the end of the week (in case anyone is interested).
