Has there been any controversy regarding some of the sit skiers yet? Especially Mao Zhongwu seems like a tad of a misclassification....instead of in the category with the most severe disability, his movement strongly suggests he should be not one category higher, but arguably even in the category with the lightest disability :yikes:  (so 100% time instead of only 86%)

He moves way better than most athletes with lighter classifications..

Edit: LW10 is for athletes who can't sit up without support. Didn't know it doesn't necessarily have so much to do with how much one can move, i.e. athletes who move significantly better on the skis but can't sit up without support are classified with a more severe disability than athletes who can't move well, but can sit up without support.

What, mixed relay can have two women + two men but also having just one woman is fine. Out of eight countries, six have a regular mixed team, Brazil has three men and one woman (they only have one woman) and to the surprise of nobody, China went for the three men + one woman as well, they'll win this by an hour

At least there is some time adjustment work done with that, to make things more complicated to follow, but a little more 'fair'.

About the relays in cross-country: does anyone know the difference between the mixed relay and the open relay? Both start lists are a total mess, with teams in every random combination one can imagine, from only sit skiers, to three men + one woman, to four male sit skiers, to Canada which starts with one visually impaired man and one standing woman who both ski twice.

Mixed relay:

Open relay:

Both are mixed in terms of impairments and in terms of male/female, and so both seem open as well. What's up with this?

I am not entirely sure, but I remember it has something to do with the % limit which can not extand 350 % or something like that in the classic mixed relay, the open relay is in other hand completely open to everyone.

but I am not entirely sure it is just a thing I rmember heard once in the past somewhere

Quote

324.1.1 At PWG and WCH, each nation can enter 1 team per relay competition. Any athlete can only participate in one relay competition. In other events the jury may decide to allow more than one team per nation, mixed nation teams, and athlete participation in more than one relay competition. An athlete may not compete for more than one team per competition.

Distance: Mixed relay and Open relay - 4x2.5 km (sit ski course/standing course/sit ski course/standing course)

1st leg: 2.5 km classical

2nd leg: 2.5 km free

3rd leg: 2.5 km classical

4th leg: 2.5 km free

324.1.2 Mixed Relay: the combined percentage of each team must be 335% or less, calculated by summing the individual percentages of the athlete in each leg with reductions of 15% per leg for female athletes and 12% per leg for sit ski athletes (female sit ski athlete: minus 27%). There must be at least one-woman taking part.

324.1.3 Open Relay: the combined percentage of each team must be 375% or less, calculated by summing the individual percentages of the athlete in each leg with reductions of 15% per leg for female athletes and 12% per leg for sit ski athletes (female sit ski athlete: minus 27%).

324.1.4 Each team may consist of 2, 3 or 4 athletes. For examples of possible team compositions see “Examples for composition of relay teams” published on the WPNS website in the rules section.

I’ve copied/pasted some of the main relay rules above. Here’s a link to the rules and regulations as well: https://www.paralympic.org/sites/default/files/2021-10/2021_09_30 WPNS_Rules and Regulations_2021-22_0.pdf

So basically mixed and open sound like different concepts, but in reality the format is exactly the same only with a different number :p

And apparently two athletes can form a relay team together. Which makes me wonder: considering there is at least one nation with a full-male team on the start list, theoretically even a nation which only has a single male (or a single female athlete) could start in a relay with just their one athlete :d

Edit: Hadn't noticed the last paragraph yet, dang it. No solo relay team :p

Is anyone actually seriously buying these Chinese performances at these Paralympics? I know there's always a host nation boost and China will inevitably have invested a lot in winter parasports in the last four years, but I genuinely can't see a legitimate way you can go from only having 1 Winter Paralympic medal in your entire history to 18 golds and 59 medals. I don't know what's going on (dodgy classification system seems to be a likelihood) but I don't buy it.
