They got very lucky with the Safety Car and you just can't overtake in dirty air in modern F1. On pace alone, they got their butts kicked.

Especially on this track it's hard. And yeah, with current cars it's nearly impossible. As Verstappen said about his struggle with Magnussen and Alonso: "If you're within one second behind the car in front of you, you've got basically no chance."

I don't think Mercedes put that much attention to wind tunnel results when following another car. They expect to be up front and rightfully so. But the dirty air influence remains the biggest F1 problem and it hasn't been solved. You must count on a driver error to get a solid shot at overtaking. This isn't the manual clutch and gear lever thing anymore. With so much electronics on the cars, drivers are less prone to make an error.
