Today started in Malaysia the first tournament of World League round 2, which gives two places (and maybe a best 3rd eventually) in semifinal round.

:IRL & :ITA should have no big trouble taking the 2 available places, :MAS should take 3rd, but has to watch out for :WAL

:IRL & :MAS advance to semifinal round of women's world league. The latter made an slight upset beating :ITA, who will have now to wait to get a best third place in next round (it is highly likely). Ireland strong team, was close to the olympics and should now qualify for world cup.

I can't imagine other scenario like Spain and India winning or at least getting to the final of their tournaments, which means Italy would be the best third placed team. Along with Spain I'd like to see Poland in the final of Valencia tournament - now the only chance for us to get to the next round and fight for the World Cup quota.

So, the world league and champions trophy will be replaced by some sort of home and away league that will serve as qualification for the next olympics. FIH asked nations to send bids to participate in both or either men's and women's competition and these were the nations that made the first cut:

Both men's and women's: Argentina, Australia, Belgium, England, Germany, India, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain.

Only Women: China, Italy, USA

Only Men: Malaysia, Pakistan

Canada was the only top 16 men's nation that didn't bid, Malaysia also wanted to bid for women's but were rejected due to low ranking. The final cut will be down to 8 or 9 per gender and those nations will participate in the new league.

I would say that Argentina, Australia, Germany, Netherlands and England are 99% sure going to get both teams in. Also I think India and Belgium men and USA/NZ women are 99% in too. So, that would leave 1 or 2 spots for men and women available..

:ESP and :POL qualified for semifinal round of women's world league. With :SCO taking 3rd, it means :ITA has also qualified due to higher ranking. However, Scotland has a high ranking (17th), so they will qualify too as long as India doesn't finish 3rd in the last tournament of this second round.

Davey Harte named goalkeeper of the year for the second year in a row. That's a big achievement for an Irish hockey player :)

van As winning is undeserved, should have been K. Walsh or S. Michelsen.

The other awards are ok I guess, though I'm a bit salty cuz our men's team didn't get a single category.

:MAS & :CHN advance to the next round of Men's World League. :EGY still has a chance to advance as a best 3rd though, but they have to wait.

Today starts the second round 2 tournament in Belfast, :IRL big favorite to win. 2nd place should be between :AUT  or :FRA. A bit behind are  :POL and :WAL

Yeah but hockey rankings are pretty useless to determine current form. I remember we played Italy in World League last year (Olympic qualifiers) and your team was decent.
