We only began to struggle in the mid 80s when the L.A. boycott severed a lot of athletic programmes among others. Seoul 1988 remains out worst post WWII Olympic performance (minus the Melbourne voyage in 1956). This stretched to the early 90s and we only began scoring good results since 1996. Before that we had Artur Partyka, Wanda Panfil and Robert Korzeniowski. Partyka's bronze in the high jump was the only medal we got in the 1992 Olympics, we had no medals at all in Seoul (6th in 4x100 wome relay was our best). Our best result at European Champs is 15 medals in 1966 at the height of the 'Wunderteam' years.

These junior results sometimes don't transfer to the seniors. Konrad Bukowiecki was labelled as the top junior in the world and now Haratyk has his measure and beyond. If three years ago anyone said Haratyk will be better than Bukowiecki you'd be laughed off and then some.

I didnt predict Haratyk to be any good (never cared about polish athletics, so i didnt know of him until 2 or 3 years ago), but i never thought that Bukowiecki was such a great talent, just like Jacko Gill he looked like a weightlifter as a teenager already, never saw that much potential left in him, but who knows?

Thiam might not be in top shape, but i have never seen such a clutch athlete before ...

When KJT did 6.64 m in the long jump, she immediately reacted with 6.60 m and now she again finds a way to reply.

I am officially a fan of the dutch athletics team, Visser, Vetter and Krumins all seem to be very likeable athletes. Too bad we also have to have Schippers and Hassan in our team.

Thiam gained 305 pts on KJT in the javelin :bounce:

Told you ;)

If you'd like to help our fellow Totallympics member Bruna Moura get to the 2026 Winter Olympics, after her car crash on the way to the 2022 Olympics, every tiny bit of help would be greatly appreciated! Full story and how to help can be found here!

Pretty poor results for Vetter in Javelin. Might have lost the bronze there :(

Actually it's quite a decent result (not 'great', could have been a meter or so more, but not bad), her 58m is just a huge outlier :d

That's actually a very typical problem in junior athletics. Underdogs quite usually outclass their more talented compatriots. If you start winning everything left and centre, you sometimes feel entitled to your results and you might put not as much work in as the fellow athlete that is trying to become better than you. We have years and years, pages upon pages of Excel files, showing how most of the Lithuanian athletes that are big today, have not been breaking junior records. Whilst those that have been breaking junior records, most of them don't actually stick it out to the end when shit gets tough, because they're used to having everything easy, hence their natural talent. We have so many 'promising' athletes that are floating around the world somewhere, doing heck knows what.
