  1. Ok let me clarify.

World Team Ranking has the component of Singles Ranking. How is this component calculated? With help of a list having the top 3 players score. For example, China's score would be 8800 (Sun) + 4505 (Wang) + 4325 (Chen) = 17630. Similarly all nations score is calculated and a list is formed. Now, the top nation in the list gets 2000 points. 2nd placed nation gets 1850 and so on.

Now, why would this ranking change from what we are seeing at ITTF website at present? Because Singles Ranking of players will change not only because of World Championships (minor change) but also because of points dropped from Feb 2023 and other points earned in Feb 2024. For example, if you check HKG has a Singles Total of 1163 (including 580 of DOO Hoi Kem) but in the WR published on 20 Feb, DOO has only 315 points. So, HKG's score would see a drop in the next update.

Since, March Team Ranking would be used for Olympic Qualification, it is safe to assume that March Singles Ranking would be used to calculate that Team Ranking.

    https://www.ittf.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/ITTF-World-Team-Ranking-Regulation-20230524.pdf

Since, I have done my calculations on the fly with the main aim of finding out if India has qualified or not, there is a good chance that there might be some errors in the calculations. It would be great if someone can do proper calculations to find out the correct scores.

In the Men's section, since the gap between India (last qualified) and Iran (Reserve 1) is decent according to calculations of @Siddhartha Talukdar I have not bothered to check it. Would appreciate if someone did similar calculations for Men's section as well.

  2. With :IND:SWE and :POR losing, all three would have same points from WTT.

From Continental Competitions: :IND has 250, :SWE 286 and :POR 378.

    Now onto Singles:

    New total for :IND (Singles ranking 15) : 1136, :SWE (SR 16) 1005 :POR (SR 17) 760

    :HKG (SR 12): 866 :AUT (SR 13): 1023 :USA (SR 14) 1272

So, new PSR should be :USA:IND:AUT:SWE:HKG:POR

So, :IND with SR 13 would get 784 points (Total points: 2106), :SWE with SR 15 would get 672 (2030) and :POR with SR 17 would get 574 (2024)

Infact Poland would be at 2114 (assuming same SR). So, by my calculations :POR is the one who will miss out.

But that makes so little sense .... So someone who finishes 10 in medal race ( officially 10th) gets 20 points and someone who gets 11th i.e comes first in remaining fleet....gets 11 points ...  So if both were looking to get a quota let us say ....the guy who finishes 11th ( first in the remaining fleet gets a huge advantage )

The way it works is that those in top 10 will be in top 10 only. No matter the score, person not in medal fleet cannot finish higher than anyone in the medal fleet. Just as Gold Fleet/Silver Fleet. The persons who are in the lower half of Gold Fleet have higher scores than top half of Silver Fleet but still would be ranked higher.

The winners of this playoff round will play against the group winners. The winner of each match shall qualify for quarterfinals and Olympics.

And if any continental quota winners are among the quarterfinalists, that quota place will go to March Team Ranking.

Yep, only :CHN :IND & :INA are allowed to be coal-fired now. The good news is they are building lots of new ones. :champion:

Didn't Europe recommission a number of Coal-fired power plants since Russian invasion of Ukraine?

Milei "being honest" about the economic situation could be good a thing, but he still has to propose practical solutions to very real problems.

Don't know if the solutions he is taking are good or bad but it is intellectual dishonesty to blame Milei for hyperinflation. He has inherited a very weak economy and telling the public/investors/world the real state of the economy is a much needed first step and should be applauded. It is also a good step politically, as it shows your predecessors as bad and tries to put the blame for subsequent hardships on them. Now, let us see if he can come up with the more difficult work of practical solutions which will be politically bad as well.

  7. Insane innings by Maxwell. Surely one of the best ODI knock of all-time. Tough luck :AFG. Their inexperience showed in the later stages of the game when they didn't have any idea about how to stop Maxwell who could not even run.

A football analogy I read about Maxwell's innings was "This was like a player scoring 8 goals in last 10 mins of a game after pulling a hamstring and when his team is down 7-0"

Right, that helps! So winning by overs or wickets says nothing about whether the victory was massive or tiny, the only thing it says is which team batted first.

Yes and No. Winning by X runs/Y wickets does give some idea about whether victory was massive or tiny. For example, win by 100 runs is massive while win by 10 runs is tiny as the losing team was in with a chance for a longer time. Similarly, win by 1 wicket is marginal while win by 10 wickets shows domination.

Cricket fans love citing Netherlands as a competitive nation, but I’m not sure they’ve played a competitive game yet at the current ICC World Cup.

They haven’t faired much better in baseball, but the sport is almost certainly more global, even if it too is limited to a few hot spots.

I wonder if in the case of South America, we might not have pan-american qualification - or even an unusual split of one Caribbean spot, and one mainland pan-american spot, with Guyana having to join its West Indie brethren in the Caribbean qualification comp. IS a six team tournament really going to have a one per continent rule when there is such disparity between the continents? Are organisers really going to forgoe the chance of IND v PAK to accommodate Guyana, or Surinam - can't see that

I think somehow we're gonna end up with USA, Europe 1 (almost certainly GBR, although outside chance of Ireland or Netherlands), (Asia 1) IND or PAK, Africa 1 (RSA), (Oceania 1) AUS and a.n.o probably a playoff between Pan America 1 (Say TRI) and Asia 2 (PAK or IND)

An eight team comp would make much more sense in that context with guaranteed spots for Pan America 1 and Asia 2, and a grand final qualifier for the eighth spot., but it is what it is.

For 6 team tournament in LA:

USA: Host + Pan American quota

Asia/Europe/Africa and Oceania: 1 quota each

And 1 final quota for World Ranking. (I would prefer qualification tournament but ICC would almost surely chose ranking)

If somehow they do get 8 team tournament for men, then there is a chance that there will be one qualification tournament for final spot and 2 spots being available for rankings.

    • 318 out of the 329 events hosted in Paris 2024 is competed in Huangzhou.

Which are the 11 Olympic events not competed in Huangzhou? IIRC, there was some difference in Weightlifting. What else?

Good luck in selling cricket in USA. You could hardly accept soccer which is the most popular sport in the world. And now you want cricket in Los Angeles? Some of these US fans would be more interested in hot dog eating competition than cricket IMO   Cricket is fine for Commonwealth Games to celebrate centuries of colonialism but there's a reason why countries outside of the British rule never found any interest in that.

You simply don't get it. ICC/India is not selling cricket to USA. IOC/LA is looking at Cricket viewerships in India. They are counting that there are enough Indian origin HNIs in Silicon Valley who will pay top dollar to see Indian national team. We don't care if common Americans don't watch Cricket. We don't care if Europeans find Cricket boring. If you find flag football/lacrosse more Olympic worthy than Cricket then fine continue to whine. Your choice. We don't care.

  13. Last 2 Gold medals we won were both farcical. Cricket should have reserve days and in Kabbadi, referees should be more authoritative. I don't believe that they should not change decision based on discussion. What should have happened is: The main officials should have pulled the two coaches aside and have discussion with them asking each to give their interpretation of the rule, consulted the official rulebook and made the decision and stuck to it. If either team was adamant on not accepting the ruling, they should have declared the other team winner by forfeit.

Since India is the bigger force in Kabbadi, was the team that protested initially and the final decision was in our favour, we do come out as the culprit. And I am sad that we couldn't complete our redemption by defeating Iran fair and square in the final.

one hour now. referees have zero control on the court.

In any decently conducted sport, match officials would have told the teams that this is their final decision. They have two options accept it and play on or forfeit the match.

Poland v. Ukraine getting a lot of attention, but the India v. Canada drama is just as interesting too. These geopolitical spats are coming too quick to keep up with this week.

I am curious what is your reading of coverage of India v Canada drama in American media. Is it just a footnote or are they covering it as something big?

Yeah, but not going to fall in this trap again, so I am not going to post anything in this topic :p

I was already "educated" here quite hardly last year that this is not cricket as I always thought, so it was enough for me :p

I think I have tried to help you (or someone else) in the past. Croquet with a Q is played by Queen of Hearts. Cricket with an I is played by Indians.

  17. Saikhom Mirabai Chanu in group D with an entry total of 60kg.  Either there is a mistake in entry or she is just going to meet minimum tournament requirements. These examples show what a mockery the present qualification system is.

P.S.: Out of 6 Indians, 3 have entry totals of 60kg. Really looking forward to following the tournament. :hyper:
