  5. Another option would be to remove ice hockey, that would save a true boatload of quotas.

  8. Exactly. Events should not be put in the Olympics to make them grow, events should be interesting enough to grow before they're being put in the Olympics.

  11. Wtf is that lmfao!! Have the IOC lost it !? It was also confirmed that softball will be organised as a single round robin competition, while baseball will feature a format of two groups of three teams, followed by a knockout phase" Great, lets fly in 24 athletes per team, use a dedicated stadium in Fukushima (which is not necessary) for some teams to just play 2 games. What a fuking joke.

  12. So apparently alpine combined is not out? So much for @heywoodu's statement about Gisin being Olympic champion for all times. I'm quite happy that they didn't go for that parallel/city/boring event and whatnot.

  15. Some notes: - First competition of the Games will be a Softball match on the Wednesday before the Opening Ceremony; - Football, Archery and Rowing also will start before or at the day of the OC; - It looks like the first medal will come from Shooting, as usual; - Taekwondo will be held on the first 4 days of the Games starting on Saturday, rather than on the last days like in the previous Games. Maybe they changed this because Karate will happen on the days that Taekwondo used to be held; - There will be a Cycling event every single day of the Games, in order: 2 days of Road, 2 of MB, 1 of Road (Time Trial), 2 of BMX, 2 of BMX Freestyle and 7 of Track (which will now have events until the last Sunday); - I think Basketball, Handball and Volleyball all have switched the day of Men's and Women's final. Men's will be on the last Saturday and Women's on Sunday. Beach Volleyball remain the same but finals will be later than usual (last Friday for Women's and Saturday for Men's); - Premilinary rounds and Finals of a given Wrestling category will be played in different days.

  16. Wow, they even added 2 mixed doubles in curling. As if that's going to make any difference.

  18. Hello from Székesfehérvár. After beatiful sunny Tuesday with a great fight until the end (top three within one second), today we have windy Wednesday (the obstacles in the riding arena were falling down) with a big show of good running from France, solid combined by Germans and saved podium by Latvians. Tomorrow and on Friday qualifications. then finals and on Monday we finish with mixed relays. Greetings!

  22. Why add an event that makes the most sense? IOC Logic..

  23. Right, but it still stands that most culture discourages women from participating in sports. There is also a lack of money and funding for women’s sports because of sexist beliefs. How are women supposed to be motivated, if men do not support them and only discourage them.

  24. For the most part I would agree but I do like some changes like the addition of non-traditional new sports at the Summer Games. Also, I'm not jumping the "Mixed events are shit" bandwagon. They are perfect for sports like Triathlon or Modern Pentathlon where separate men's and women's team events for them would be too much. Too bad MP didn't get their mixed event at the Olympics. The Mixed Medley Relay in Swimming however is nonsense.

  25. no, here in Europe it's not like that... it's not a question of being sexist...it's really like @dcro wrote... most girls here are not really interested in sports (especially some not so popular disciplines not seen as "female oriented"), even when they're given the same exact opportunities as the boys...

  29. Women's Handball and Volleyball finals are more exciting (to me) than Men's. So maybe for some people the Men's events are better, but not for everyone - I know for a fact that sports fans in Brazil care more about Women's than Men's, and that's a big market if we're talking about Volleyball. + (i'm just fishing here) maybe the time difference favours the Men's events finals to be held on Saturday? (for America viewers, I mean?) Maybe they could create a rotation system, but there's no reason to be so mad at this decision.

  30. But that's the point, B nations will miss out on qualifications so more and more nations will only enter alpine/cross-country skiing.
    1 point
  31. The problem is that every mixed event any random person throws at them as suggestion seems to be added, while actual new sports (telemark skiing, natural track luge) don't make it. They are doing rather radical stuff for the Summer Olympics by the way, with 100% judge sports like surfing or skateboarding, or a non-existing climbing event as the only climbing event.
    1 point
  32. I'm not 100% behind IOC changes either (those mixed events are mostly unnecessary and will only be good for the top nations anyway), but at least they're trying to add new things (and nothing extremely radical like what happens on YOG). For some opinions here, it looks like 3 or 4 more women's events will completely ruin the Winter Olympics
    1 point
  33. They really did Telemark dirty. Come on, it was something new! I'm really sad it didn't make the cut...
    1 point
  34. Being included in YOGs first is a good first stop, let the sport grow and put in the big event when its interesting to watch.

  35. It becomes a liability to have so many players involved when the other sports need to have their quotas reduced. Football has 11 players on the pitch, and it is working perfectly well with 18 team members at the Olympic tournaments. Hockey meanwhile somehow has 23 despite only 6 being on ice at one time...
    1 point
  36. 23 is actually a really reasonable quota for a hockey team. 22 players can dress for a game, plus a third goaltender.

  37. I'm more of the "IOC destroys women's sports by adding them to the Olymics while not being competitive yet, so people think they are bad" camp I want to see two women's bobsleigh events, I want to see women's Nordic combined, but they have to be given at least some time to grow up into something that is at least somewhat competitive.
    1 point
  38. The IOC is fuking up the sports program to be polticially correct. What a joke. If you need more events for women, then add them but dont subtract from the men's side.
    1 point
  39. If the reduction actually comes from the top nations, I would be positively surprised. I know there's been a lot of lobbying to try and get their 6-athlete quota down to open up some chances for smaller nations.
    1 point
  40. Well the top 5 nations really do not need a 6th athlete, so that saves about 10 spots.
    1 point
  41. Wait, what...? Another major hit against the smaller nations after making it almost impossible for them to qualify for 2018 already?
    1 point
  42. Biathlon quota reduction makes sense. Skating does not make sense. Speed skating is seeing growth in non-traditional markets and short track is ridiculously hard to qualify

  43. Wtf is the point of these mixed team events. So fuking stupid

  45. Just saw the video, Zabel missed the limit by 5 seconds...still, a limit is a limit. What if he was 6 seconds outside? Or 15? Or 23? Or 35? This tweet made me think Kittel missed it by 12 seconds instead of minutes, annoying TdF people using stuff like 12' instead of simply minutes and seconds
