  1. Here's a possibly helpful guide to which debuting/returning/otherwise unlikely (unsure of qualification) countries we may see and how likely it is we'll see them: (Estimates are my own. Only countries with currently active athletes registered with their respective bodies are included.) Alpine Skiing: >95% >95% >95% >95% >95% >95% >95% >95% >95% >95% 90% (you never know) 80% 80% 70% 40% 20-30% 20% (qualified, but unlikely to go) 15% 10% (qualified, but near-impossible to go) 10% 10% 5% 5% 5% (in the unlikely event he resumes competition he should get in) 3% 1% 0.1% 0.01% Cross-Country Skiing: >95% >95% 95% 95% 55% 35% 30% 30% 25% 25% 10% (unsure if active, but did start competing on short notice before Sochi) 5% 5% 2% Freestyle Skiing: 30% 20% 20% 15% 5% (could maybe make it if he decided to, but it is unlikely) Snowboarding: 30% 5% Figure Skating: 60% 60% 40% 30% 5% Speed Skating: 75% 40% Short Track: 75% 35% 30% 30% 30% 10% 0.01% Bobsleigh: 65% 55% 1% (they did say they'd come back sometime...) Skeleton: 35% 25% Luge: 30% (active, but has said he's struggling with funding to get to 2018)

  2. For those of you interested in the Puerto Rico situation they sent me this: The guidelines to participate are highly subjective. Because all Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens, the Puerto Rico Olympic Committee is very sensitive to mainland U.S. persons using them as a back door into the Olympics. In an Olympic year, I typically get a couple of e-mails from people who think our federation is some sort of sports fantasy camp, and promise to “promote” Puerto Rico if they go to the Olympics. So, to answer your question, with the current political environment, a prospective Olympic competitor for Puerto Rico would have to be born on the island, have multi-generational Puerto Rican ancestry, and be somewhat of a threat to win a medal. We had a native-born 50-point slalom skier who should have gone to both Vancouver and Sochi; however, because she was more American than Puerto Rican, they wouldn’t send her. Charles Flaherty is definitely American. His family are bona-fide residents of Puerto Rico, but he’s still facing an uphill battle to go to Korea. We hope he can convince the Puerto Rico Olympic Committee (COPUR) to send him, but nobody is holding their breath… :-/ David Steele

  3. As we approach the 25 weeks to go milestone until 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang, it's time to open our official countdown thread here on Totallympics. Members can post here on the thread day-by-day to help build the excitement in the coming weeks as we countdown to the big event. This thread can be used to mark any milestones on the way, such as the opening of the Olympic village, tracking the arrival of delegations, the raising of our national flags in the Olympic village, news and details about the Opening Ceremony and so on. To help us countdown the days ahead, I have created an Olympic Countdown Clock depicting the 2018 Winter Olympic logo alongside the Olympic rings. The clock consists of various elements to help us mark off milestones along the way as we edge closer and closer to the Opening Ceremony on the 9th February. Firstly, the logo itself is divided into 2 elements.... the first part consisting numbers 1-24 representing the number of weeks until the official start of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. As each week passes, another coloured "block" will be added to the logo until it begins to take on it's familiar appearance. The second element consisting of the an alpha-numeric system will represent various other milestones to watch out for along the way that signify the the Games are getting closer. I will draw up a list of ideas for these milestones and I am calling on you to help with suggesting ideas for this (I am not very knowledgeable in Winter Sports). Ideas currently include: Key: a1 6 months to go a2 3 months to go a3 1 month to go b1 150 days to go b2 100 days to go b3 75 days to go c1 Four Hills Tournament begins c2 Hahnenkamm Race begins c3 Winter X Games begin d1 tickets go on sale d2 2018 Olympic year arrives (Jan 1st) d3 2018 Olympic Prediction Contests Open on Totallympics e1 lighting of Olympic flame in Olympia, Greece e2 Olympic flame arrives in Incheon e3 Olympic flame arrives in Gangwon province x Olympic cauldron is lit Finally, below the official logo is a depiction that becomes active on the "50 days to go" milestone, consisting of the numbers 1-50, representing the 5 Olympic rings. As each day passes, another piece of the Olympic ring is shaded in colour until the 1 day to go milestone, after which the 5 coloured rings will be depicted in their complete form. The Countdown Clock will not be complete until the Olympic cauldron is officially lit inside the Olympic stadium on the night of the Opening Ceremony. Upon completion, the Countdown Clock should look like this...... 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 PyeongChang 2018 ------------------50--------------------------------------25--------------------------------------02----- --------49-----------------48------------------27-----------------24-------------------04----------------01- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --47----------------------------46-------29-----------------------------22-------06----------------------------03 --------------------------------------36--------------------------------------16------------------------------- --45-----------------------38--43-------30--33-------------------18--21-------08--13------------------------05 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------44-----------40---41------------------28--31-------20--23-------------------10--11-----------07--- ------------------42--------------------------------------26--------------------------------------09------------- ----------------------39-----------------------------32-------19----------------------------12----------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------37-----------------34-------------------17----------------14------------- --------------------------------------35--------------------------------------15--------------- So without further ado, let the countdown to the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympic Games begin

  6. Billy Walsh left his role in Ireland in late 2015 to coach the US boxing team..... success quickly followed. Our federation treated him like crap.

  9. yes 6+6, They for some reasons, which are beyond me, got the brilliant idea that to add womens C events in both canoeing disciplines will be a great idea, also to cut the both men´s highlight events (Canoe slalom C2 has been even totally removed from the program) and in canoeing sprint the K4-1000 replaced by a shortened distance because apparently a 500m sprint is much more fresh and young viewers friendly...... 6 men´s and women´s events (K1-200, K1-1000, K2-1000, K4-500, C1-1000 and C2-1000 for mens and K1-200, K1-500, K2-500, K4-500, C1-200 and C2-500 for women´s) In Canoe slalom (K1 M, C1 M - K1 W, C1 W)

  14. Disappointing that Tissot Timing doesn't have results for the junior world champs, I thought they'd do that as well (like in road cycling they do have junior categories). Are live results and such found somewhere else (preferrably somewhere that uses the country codes instead of flags so you can actually search for your nation ).

  17. Lipnitskaya apparently has serious problems with anorexia... so, the situation is a lot more scaring than just having stopped her skating career... I hope she can recover and get well again, sooner or later (possibly as soon as possible)...
